Jo Jo Urbanic has been a Capitola staple since 1963. I remember him from the fun days as a kid at Andy’s and Lavern’s Skeeball/Pinball Arcade on the Esplandade. He worked and played skee ball there. It was where Zeldas is today.

Go Big .. or Go Home
Hey Fishyboy, my son just got an RC Surfer and said he’s trying to get used to the fact that when he turns the steering controller knob left the RC Surfer goes right. Does yours do the same thing? Thanks!
Nice to meet you today ed From cambria !
@@bigsur21 nice to meet the both of you as well…….
Thanks for the update!
Absolutely beautiful! 👍👍

You can see how surf inspired this place was. Would have loved to skate this place as a warm up before surfing the point!
@@fulltang1 yep.it was all about carving and off the lip
Ahhhhh Winchester skatepark, how I miss those days.
My San Clemente band Sacred Haze played there the last skate party before torn down around 85 or so , hosoi was there , Jon and some locals I worked with at the shadowbrook lived in the old offices then...
John “the Hut” Hutson passed on Tuesday September 3rd, 2024. RIP
RIP John “hut” Hutson
John passed on Tuesday September 3rd, 2024
Looks like skateboarding on a snowpark style skate park. Venice Beach skate kept this style of terrain alive in the shallow areas of their world famous snake run!😊
Saw a lot of my brothers in there.
@@srf2112 Oh good. Those were great times…
Thanks for posting this. Sure brings back memories. I took photos just after opening for Soquel High Lancer (news paper) I was a photographer in the journalism class. I live just down the street from there. Does anyone remember the slalom races down Monterey Ave in Capitola?
@@roccodog8232 oh yea. The Capitola Classic….John Hudson, Michael Goldman. There’s a Thrasher Magazine on eBay right now with that on the Front Cover…
Skateboarding was so great then, thanks for posting this. I only rode Soquel once when all the runs were there, (14 year old then in San Jose riding Winchester and Campbell). After Soquel was closed two of my friends from SJ moved into the upstairs of the old pro shop and we skated the little practice area almost daily for years. Fun times.
Pre-coping era!
I wonder what Santa Cruz skateboarding would have been like without Soquel? It provided a canvas for skaters to create…….
Nice Bert move toward the end ( before that lame song came on ).
That was a song of the times. Before you were born
Does anyone know if this was located at the current location of Beer Thirty?
@@robwgeorge yes it is. Main St Soquel. The back wall and part of the half pipe wall is still there.
@@fishyboy2447 Awesome. Thanks for the reply.
AWSESOME That was me holding the skateboard for Carter or Roberts hard to tell. Tim hoppe Here still a Local . Work there in the pro shop NHS and was a dream job as a kid. Still se ED D around town ,Such good memories. Side Note Steve ferro And I were close freinds back then, Such a sad Loss , Very talanted Surfer Skater . RIP Thanks for the flash back,,,,
Where was this at exactly ? Near where Carpo’s is now?
@@matthewellis3004 yes. Where Beer 30 is…..
ROOTS ! 😊
Skated this park and bought this exact album at record factory next to 41st avenue playhouse where Star Wars played for like two years. R.F. had a huge Boston display in the front window. I was wearing O.P. cords and vans.
I had those same cords light blue , tan , and brown in KANSAS ! my grandmother sent them to me as a birthday gift ! I never was able to skate this park (only in my dreams through pictures) I always liked how it was sssssooooooo organic with endless lines 😊
Now everybody is Mexican
Such a simpler time ...I was an east coast kid , Jersey ...We had CHERRY HILL park
Tony Carter was da man.
@@chrisp.frye-noodles8761 Tony’s style was so fluid and stylish….
Very Rad!!!!!
Hahahaha! I love that they brushed the surface…😂 I mean, they really didn’t know any better right?
Wow. Over 8,000 hits. I’m so glad all like it. It was a blast.
are u kidding dude this is the good stuff right here man. Thank U very much Im stoked to go skating tomorrow now this is awesome
I lived down the road in Soquel and watched this place get built and tried to ride just the basic stuff as a young kid, it was such a great experience and memory. I talked about this place for years and not many people remembered it because they were so young. It’s cool to see this video!
I’m stoked you liked it……Ed
Were you there, T.R.?
These were the days for sure. What a great time growing up during this time. We got to live through the boom in skateboarding technology to what it is today.
That’s when I was born and that’s where I live. Neat.
❤

F yeah those days were epic with Kevin Reed and Bo Holbrook, Keith Meeks, Chris Heinen, Carter Bros, Tom Nikadimo and all the SC Old School. Thank you Ed DeRosa for such great memories. Shout out to Fredrick Street while I'm here.
From a dude growing up skating in the 90s era I appreciate the footage here...
Thanks for uploading your footage!!!!!Historical !!!!!
Awesome footage. What a historical gem!
Wow total memory rush!! God I miss those days...
I skated there! Great to see the construction footage - wow!. I remember thinking the halfpipe was mighty at the time, but I was riding a Tunnel board with halftracks and rocks, so dropping in was a test of courage, since the surface wasn't super smooth, and our boards were skinny as hell
TUNNEL ROCKS ! ROCKED
Such rad memories. From when it was open, then taking skateboards and cruiser bikes in there when it was closed. Had the freewheels but couldn't figure out the brake mounting at that point, so no brakes at all on our cruisers. The 1st big snake run ruled for those! The deep bowl with the over vert part, too. Thanks for uploading this.
Beautiful, beautiful, the U.S.A. is great!!!!
Awesome. We stayed in Capitola a couple of weeks every Summer when I was in Jr. Hi and High School. Never went to the beach, but insted spent most of my time at this park. Great memories. Thanks for posting.
like Alan Gelfand said a million years ago "the beach is boring , nothing but sand"
The level of skating, the clothes, the magic expectations filling the air. Wonderful 1978! How sad and nostalgic to hear the last song, "Those were the Days, my Friend", it makes this feel a VERY long time a go.
watching the little rippers in a lineup waiting to go brings back a flood of memories 😊 all good 👍
The kid in the red helmet and stripped shirt in the Snake Run is Tommy Carter. Younger brother of Tony and Todd. The shirtless guy ripping the Reseda Run is Rick Childers. The red long hair guy is Sean O’Callahan. Our Stacey Peralta back in the day.
I always tell parents,"Let your kids skate, it'll make 'em tuff" Didn't get to skate there when it was open, but skated almost daily when Rob and Bret lived there thru mid '80's. Cool seeing them do the finish on the beginner bowl. That was the only part not dozed. Thanks for putting this where people can watch what used to be
@Fishyboy, great stuff. Thanks for sharing! I remember seeing the article about Soquel in SkateBoarder magazine. (Coming from the Midwest, I thought it was pronounced "so-kwell.") 🙂The pics of Kevin Reed and Dion still stand out in my mind some 40+ years later. It's also cool to see the varying transitions and to see John Hutson skating a park. Would you be so kind as to ID these skaters from this clip? • Regular-foot kid in red helmet and striped shirt at 7:45-8:05 - great smooth/classic style • Shirtless goofy footer from 9:34-9:41 - dude had a lot of power and very "modern" lines • Long-haired goofy footer in Santa Cruz shirt at 9:45-10:05
The kid in the red helmet and stripped shirt is Tom Carter. Younger brother of Tony and Todd.
Shirtless goofy footer is last name Childers.
The long red hair guy is Sean O’Callihan. Our Stacey Perelta.
