Never stop learning & trying out new things! #ambientguitar #ambientmusic #makemusic
I always try to continue to learn new things about music, about my guitar and the gear I use. I work to learn new things...new software, new techniques and even though I'm not really good at any of the stuff I use or even playing guitar these days...I'm not discouraged. I have a passion for music that extends far and wide.
Always try to keep learning, try a new instrument, try a new tuning, read a book about making music or about creativity.
If you'd like to help support me and this channel you can send a donation here to buy me a coffee. I'd really appreciate it.

My journey from a good finger style guitar player to a beginner....and hopefully back again. You are NEVER too old to learn or re-learn guitar. Don't give up. Check out Rick's story in this video. Ricks video was entitled "It's never too late". I inadvertently said you're never too old...but same thing. Enjoy! ua-cam.com/video/y4EraezQ78I/v-deo.htmlsi=F9xNX7-HWX5u2GB4

The Guitars I Use for Ambient Guitar. Inspired by Chords of Orion #ambientguitar #guitarforbeginners

A bit about the 3 guitars I use to inspire my music. Each guitar has its own mood, feel and unique sound. I love these three guitars and they all help me feel creative and suggest different directions when I sit down to play. These guitars are the most important part of my stage rig for my style of ambient music. If you feel inspired to help support my musical journey you can donate or send an ...

Rhett Shull Inspired me! Restarting my youtube channel #ambientguitar #guitarforbeginners

I was recently inspired by a youtube video released by Rhett Shull a couple of days ago. His words inspired me to begin again to share my journey of creating music with my guitar on youtube. I started this channel with high hopes a couple of years ago, but along the way and because of lots of medical issues and life stresses, I became depressed and unmotivated. Watching Rhetts video has reinspi...

Just returned from an overnight gig playing at a yoga festival here in Southeast Michigan. After transporting my gear, setting up, playing our set, tearing down, packing up and transporting back home, I like to take a look at my 2 pedalboards to inspect them, check all the connection and make any repairs necessary before setting up my rig in my sound lab (practice space) to rehearse in before o...

A simpler time...guitar effects necessary? ambient music yoga meditation
Переглядів 6111 місяців тому
This is a 40 minute video filmed during a yoga class I played ambient background music for. Back from 2011. It is interesting because all I had was a small synthesizer for background tone, a harmonium and my acoustic guitar. Much simpler times...today I have electric guitars and all kind of effects to choose from....but is the effect the same? Better or worse?

this is a short video of one of my practice session. This was filmed in my "sound lab", my guitar practice space. I try to practice at least 15 minutes every day....sometimes I'm frustrated with what I play and other times I get really inspired by what is coming out of me and I might end up playing for hours. This unfortunately was one of my less inspired practices but I play none the less.

An Introduction to the Shiva Das Ambient Course
Thanks for sharing your story and for the words of encouragement. In May of 2022, after losing my career in medicine, I tried to take my own life. Feeling that medicine and helping ppl was my purpose, without a purpose I could not justify being alive. Being educated in medicine, I concocted a lethal combination of ingestible substances to ensure that I would be among the living for my last day. I, in fact, achieved my goal. Around 10 pm my girlfriend found me unresponsive, drowning in my vomit. Seconds later, in addition to my lost respiratory drive, I lost cardiac function. EMS was called and compressions were started. EMS arrived on the scene 10 minutes later. IV access was unobtainable so EMS started an intra osseous catheter so as to be able to administer rescue medications. It took over 20 mins to successfully regain cardiac function. I was transferred to the ambulance where once again my heart stopped. They got me back again before arrival at the hospital. On the way to the ICU, once again my heart failed. Another 10-20 minutes passed before I was revived again. I spent 8 days in the ICU sedated, ventilated, cooled, stabilized with multiple vasopressors and dialyzed. I failed all my neuro responsive tests (ie following commands, pupillary response, and even pain withdrawal responses). The lead neurologists at UNC, explained to my family that I would live, but my remaining years would be spent in a semi-vegetative state, never to be able to live independently, and never again to interact in any meaningful way. I put my loved ones through hell that week. The day arrived for my breathing tube to be withdrawn. Neurology, respiratory, anesthesia, and all my family were present. The breathing tube was withdrawn and what was described to me was that "I turned on like a light switch" immediately after extubation. The medical team could not explain my ability to be functioning almost normally...mentally and physically. Its been over 2 years now and although I am not functioning at 100%, I am doing fantastically well. Guitar playing is a struggle. Surfing...a no go. But Im not done trying. For now, like you, I cannot play at the level that I used to, but I still play. I still try to surf. I still believe I am healing. I have to believe that I can still repair and heal. And just maybe get my balance, coordination, short term memory, and self respect, reinstated. I still have a purpose, it just looks different than my purpose of 3 years ago. Slowly, I am accepting reality. I just have to keep trying. The only failure is in they who have stopped trying. Apparently, I have not fulfilled my reason for coming to this earth. I suppose more will be revealed.
Thank you bro for speaking the positive message and encouragement in this video. I needed to hear it on this particular day...God bless you and yours.
Thank you! Try to stay positive....just one day at a time. May God bless you, nourish and guide you!
Thanks a lot I’m battling to keep at the guitar, but you have just move the so called obstacles out of my way. Thanks again and all the very best to your dreams for 2025
You are welcome and yeah I'm glad you have decided to keep playing! Don't give up. It is really a creative gift that you have being able to play and without measuring how good you are. Just enjoy the process of playing and experiencing. I will be endeavoring to make lots more inspirational videos this year so stay tuned it. Enjoy your day!
I'm a new subscriber and like how you explained how you create your space before you play. Very nice ambient soundscape 😊
Thanks! I find that the space I create helps me find the music.
Thank you for sharing. I was very curious about the process.
Thanks....I'll be doing a lot more videos about my process and how I approach creating my music and soundscapes
Love this, thanks for sharing ✨🙏
Thank you so much for watching, I am glad you enjoyed it!

Great sharing ❤ thank you❤
Glad you enjoyed it
Fascinating music. I really like ambient sound.
thanks! appreciate it..
Hello, I woke up to Chords of Orion one night after listening to a guitar playing tutorial. I had never heard of ambient music, but it reminded me of what we call SOAKING music at church! I have since subscribed to him & listen to his videos! I am glad UA-cam suggested I watch your video as well! Thank you for sharing your story! I went to a sound bath & it was such a wonderful, relaxing, healing, resetting experience!!! I want to provide that for myself & others on a regular basis! 😊 New subscriber here! God bless you! 🙏🏾😊
Thank you. and I am happy to hear that you enjoyed the sound bath. I've trying to get a couple of my friends who do sounds baths to come onto my channel. Hopefully soon. Thank you for you nice comment. Many blessings to you too!
Thanks for sharing your journey! It is inspiring and in some ways eye opening. I will be 70 next month and over the last year after having COVID it seems the hands of time have decided to show my age. I won't go into details other then I am questioning how am I going to keep playing guitar. Your story and other videos have inspired me to think ahead be creative. Look for other means to play music regardless how simple. I don't sing at all, but I wrote my first song a couple weeks ago. Also, teaching my 2 year old grandson who wears hearing aids to count and abc's was going slow until I started putting a simple rhythm by clapping or hitting my thigh and chanting to the rhythm It proved to me I can still enjoy music through other avenues. Thank you and others for the inspiration.
Thank you so much for sharing your story, I am glad I could inspire you! And you are inspiring me as well. Just keep playing my friend!
I’m 74 years old and after hardly playing my guitar for about 50 years I made up my mind to start playing my guitar basically every day. That was 7 months ago, and I play at least 1/2 hour every day. I bought a Focusrite audio interface, downloaded Ableton DAW program, and after several weeks of frustration have finally figured out how to record in the damn thing 😆. So apparently you really can teach an old dog new tricks!
It’s awesome that you’re back to playing music again, and that you’re embracing technology! It's so good for us to play, and yes, even a few minutes a day and to challenge ourselves to learn new things. I know it's hard. But in the long run, it is rewarding. Congratulations and keep going. Have a great year!
Way to go!
Never too old until you die
Nice listening to you, on my 15th guitar started late but live for playing , set a you tube “Gareth Martyn Davies” this is my hobby without pressure and learning module , love learning 🇬🇧🙌❤️
nice....love the pink floyd....one of my favorites. Just subscribed to you channel. you are a better player than me....I am starting over but the cool thing is got to learn to play guitar twice! Oh man, you just gave me an idea for a new video. Thanks and keep playing!
Thank you for this -. I’m 73 and started playing guitar last year … I’m just enjoying the heck out of learning new stuff and trying to become good at it ….
Thank you for checking out the video. I'm glad it resonated with you and it's great that you picked up the guitar. It's so great to learn today because there are so many resources available....it is easier than ever. Keep playing and enjoy!
I really enjoyed this video and its positivity. I plan to upload more with playing this year too, I have older material on here but fun to keep at it. I just Subscribed Happy New Year.
Thank you for subscribing and I'm glad you liked the video. I plan to do a lot more this year...Have a great day!
You're absolutely correct, man. It is never too late! The human body is incredible. As we heal, we can adapt and relearn critical motor skills in the face of incredible challenges. Look how far you've come so far. We are truly fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of our Creator and He has an awesome plan for you, brother! I look forward to hearing more from you! Blessings!
Thank you so much. So well said and yes it is true that this human body is an incredible machine! I believe the same things. God has given us this gift and we should enjoy while we can and in whatever condition it is in. Have a great day and thank you for your inspirational comment.
Thanks for the words of encouragement and inspiration, I wish you every success in your endeavours in the future, may you be amply rewarded for your courage and determination. 🤟😎👍
Thank you for your kind words. Hope you have a great year!
That sounds pretty damn good for a cassette recording 😎👍
I guess....I did try to clean up the sound a bit in GarageBand. And the wonders of recording in a bathroom......Thanks!
I had a stroke 4 years ago. It gives me some hope when i see someone else who has regained the ability to play. Thanks for the inspiration.
Hey my friend. Thanks for your comment. Strokes can be scary things, but as long as you can get back your mobility we can learn to do things again. Have a great new year and I will be sharing more about my experiences with playing music and overcoming the after effects of my strrokes.
@shivadasambient Every day I realize how lucky I was that it wasn't much worse. Losing the ability to play guitar is such a small thing compared to what other people lost with their strokes. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
I share nearly the same musical journey...70's start, rock bands for years, then bluegrass, more rock, then modular synths, beats chillout electronica, and now after a break from a health issue, back to guitar and where I started - studying blues guitar and rediscovering an instrument I played long ago, harmonica. Thanks for sharing your story.
That's great. Shows your love of music and making music. Thanks for commenting and have a great 2025 creating music!
Never give up.Years ago I had a serious problem with my left hand ,after I been injured.I used to play just with 3 fingers.Later I started play again with the damaged finger.Novadays is the hand ok.I wish You successful happy new year.
Thanks you. It's great that you kept going! Yeah today my right picking hand is ok, but I just don't have the strength and dexterity I used to. My left hand is working pretty well....almost normal now so it just shows that our nervous system can heal itself in some cases. I was lucky. I could barely speak after my stroke, it took about a month to be able to be coherent, I hope you have a great New Year!
@@shivadasambient Thank You.
wow, any hobbyist who suffered that kind of medical setback would most likely just give up. you prove you have the heart of an artist! that's inspiring to me. you're right, just keep creating however you're able.
thanks....there are plenty of people out there who have much bigger setbacks then me and figure out ways to work around them. Thank you for your kind words
Love the setup... still saving up for a microcosm...
Thanks! Yeah the Microcosm is a very cool pedal. I saved up for about 6 months to get one and I've had for over a year now I think and I've barely cracked the surface with all the cool stuff you can do with it. Enjoy!
Love bill's music... and I've added you too...have an awesome day. Blessings to you.
Thank you....yeah Bill is the best! Blessing to you as well and enjoy your day!
Thank you very much for sharing such an inspirational journey. Just subscribed to the channel! I have a TC triple delay, like you and Bill. Great pedal. God bless you. 😊
Thank you for subscribing, I am so glad you found the video inspirational! have a great holiday!
nice setup! have you ever had an issue with the macbook acting funny in a live setting? it's my greatest fear to have laptop tech difficulties in front of an audience so i have avoided it at all costs up to this point. for synth i'm rocking the Arturia Minifreak and i love it, but the versatility of Mainstage would be pretty convenient and limitless
yes, I have thought about that and I think I will talk about it in my next video so watch out for it....maybe this weekend. BTW, love your videos....I'll give a shout out to your channel in the next video as well.
thanks yeah glad we can get a little ambient community going here on our little corner of the internet
Wonderful story and I just subscribed, hit the bell 🔔. Looking forward to hearing more. Thanks for sharing ✨🙏
Thank you for subscribing and for the kind words. I am glad you liked it!
@ 🙏
Thank You for a look "behind the scene".Have a good times.
Solfeggio frequencies have healing benefits . You can tune A to 432 Hz which was the concert pitch before they changed it to 440 Hz .
Yes, thank you I have been thinking about retuning to 432. I just have to figure out how to adjust my guitar tuner for that and also adjust the pitch on my synth app.
@@shivadasambient The Peterson StroboStomp HD is a tuner with a freqency range of 390 - 490 Hz Concert A reference . It's the one I use to change between 432 & 440 A pitch , lately I prefer 432 Hz it somehow makes my physical being more aware .
God bless you, Shiva Das I know that God put you in my path this morning because I sure needed it. Thank you for your beautiful talk and I’m so grateful that you became stronger and rediscovered your spiritual/musical path. I’m sure the transcendental algorithms put me here because of Bill Vencil I also discovered in the pandemic and while I have not been making ambient music, I plan on mixing it into my rock ‘n’ roll very soon here and look forward to more of your lovely posts thank you. I also have a history with kirtan /Hinduism and so that will also be coming forth in the new music I will be making. Haré Krsna! 🕊️🩷🎸
Thank you so much for you kind words. I am committed to keep making videos like this one that relay an honest and sincere approach to creativity and healing. Stay strong Summer and if you need help or want to talk just reach out to me through my email. blessings to you!
2nd time in 24 hours I’ve heard about Fripp New Standard tuning after going my whole life not knowing about it. Might have to try it out
yeah it's an interesting tuning but I don't know much about the theory behind however it does create some interesting possibilities. You have to string your guitar with a different combination of strings. I can look up what gauge my guitar guy used when he set it up for me if you want to shoot me an email.
You have beautiful taste in guitars, sir. That PRS is beautiful, looks like a dream.
Yeah, I love the PRS guitars. Beautifully designed and even the low end models which I have play very nicely. And I love the bird inlays on them.
Thank you for sharing, i share a similar path and can relate as I am a 3 cancer survivor plus a 12 day “C” hospital stay as well as a heart attack. Music is a great healing source. Love Bill’s videos as well. I noticed the Bose mixer like Mike Dawes uses. Best to you and your renewed music journey!
Thank you and many blessings to you on your journey to healing as well. Yes I do use the bose 8 channel tone match mixer. Watch out for my next video where I will do a rundown of my entire "stage rig". It's not great but it works for me but is always a work in progress. Stay healthy my friend and live your life, enjoy every moment!
Excellent recovery story - not singly from a stroke, but also depression as a result of trauma. I work in emotional trauma and always keen to discover more ways to recover. I compose and have been doing so since mid 70's and guitar is my main instrument. But, when thinking about trauma and recovery, my mind went to Pottery, as I was a potter and I realised that ceramics helped me through trauma. I wanted to use it in helping others. But now I have a friend who uses ceramics to help people with mental health issues. Music is not about how many notes you can play. It has to do something to us. Keep playing and keep recovering. This video is a very worthwhile share. Thank you. www.youtube.com/@familiesintraumarecovery6126
Wow. Missed this one. What a collection you have. I like your distinctive sound of ambient music. I believe I could pick out your music out of many other musicians -- like I can the music written by Thomas Newman (He scores movies.).
thank you. I appreciate your kind words. we all have a unique voice I suppose. Have a great weekend......more to come
Dude, you are not alone. I dig Bill's channel and that's how I found you. Do your art, play your music. You never know who you will inspire.
Thank you so much! That's so awesome to hear that you found my channel through Bill!
This, and your Chords of Orion video, are very inspiring. I started learning acoustic guitar earlier this year with basically no musical background and have been moving more and more towards playing ambient style. "Just play music" is a great ethos.
Thank you. I am so glad they inspired you. Yee, just keep playing and don't worry about anything. Just enjoy the experience without seeking to get anywhere!
I wish i had all these instruments in my attic... 😂
haha....I know. I've accumulated all of this stuff over many, many years. I hope you find something that helps you to create some beautiful music. Hey, they even turn upside down old trash cans and use them for drums. Tupperware from your kitchen works well too! Have a great day and thank you for commenting.
I'm impressed by your ambition through hardship...
thank you!
Your story is great - and inspirational. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for your kind words!
Thanks for the nudge!
yeah just keep playing!
His video came across my feed, too... and he's 100% right.
Bill got me into ambient music, too. There's just something about his personality and music that just makes me want to play ambient guitar. Cheers!
Yes I know what you mean. He is a good human being which I think those of us that really him just feel.
Very well put together and would say music has been my life & saved me in the past & present of accoustic guitar & accoustic Pedals finding my own sound & try & get out of my comfort zone of not just only one open mic venue. Been a difficult journey for me and my daughter who also takes comfort from playing guitar of which teaching her of my limited knowledge having lost my Dad/Grandpa in April & Mum/Nana in October. Chords of Orion just checked all their albums briefly of sounds excellent. Thank u 4 mentioned of them & what u put together also sounds awesome. I wish u well with all u do.
Thank you so much! Awesome to hear your thoughts and experiences.
You're never alone if you know how to drone
haha...love it...and so true!!
I myself learnt only relatively recently (a few years ago) when I started learning finger-style guitar, with no background in music at all- the kind of transcendental state we can achieve through playing music. I love that you’ve found and cultivated your particular path into it, which is different for everyone. I’m a huge fan of all musicianship. It’s a pathway into a flow state but also something more- meaning, joy, contentment, and you’ve done a good job of describing it here. I hadn’t picked up the guitar for 6 months recently because I was in a bad place mentally but I’ve since learnt if I can “force” myself on the bad days to play/practice for 30 minutes, the passion quickly comes back and it stops feeling like a chore again.
Thanks and just keep playing. I've been there too. Don't pick up the guitar for months and then come back to it after staring at it everyday. Now I just tell myself to play for just 5 minutes every day. I find that I end up playing for an hour most of the time, but other times I don't pick it up at all. It does feel good to just get the guitar in hand and put your fingers on it....definately good for relaxing the mind a bit.
Love Bill's channel...because of him, I bought a baritone !🙏
Me too....I hate when that happens, but I finally got one after watching one of his videos and I love it...sounds so full and rich
Looking forward to hearing your music
