Rick and Bill visit Josiah Bartlett signer of the Declaration of Independence and NH leader
Rick and Bill visit Josiah Bartlett signer of the Declaration of Independence, progressive physician, while elected president of New Hampshire, served as first governor of New Hampshire.
From the colonial seacoast to the White Mountains to the Great North Woods, New Hampshire burial grounds vary from urban park-like cemeteries to simple family plots. One might find a single lonely marker hidden deep in the back woods with nothing to suggest that anyone ever lived nearby. Each tombstone has its own story. All tell of the past and may speak of heroic deeds, heartfelt emotions, or great tragedies. Personal histories often become forgotten, but some survive in local lore, and some are reputed to be haunted. To create "Buried New Hampshire, Historical Graves of New Hampshire's Famous, Infamous and the Odd and Unusual," authors and photographers Rick Davidson and Bill Thompson spent a year investigating fascinating legends, following clues, and photographing granite state cemeteries. What they found is contained in this intriguing book. For example, Hemingway's Paris wife and actor Claude Rains are buried in cemeteries near Rick's and Bill's homes. Original white settlers, black people both respected as citizens and enslaved people, native Americans, heroes, murder victims, murderers, and famous historical personage can be found in New Hampshire's final resting places. Veterans of every war going as far back as the earliest colonial conflicts with Native Americans, the French and Indian War, and the Revolutionary War are among those lying beneath New Hampshire's soil. Engraved names, epitaphs, artistic cryptology on tombstones, and memorial monuments can't help but pique one's imagination. These things trigger a desire to learn more about those remembered in stone. This book is the product of extensive research and evocative location photography throughout New Hampshire. Well-known personalities in New Hampshire folklore and some who lie in their final resting place shrouded in mystery come alive in this book. Rick and Bill have a long history of roaming New Hampshire together, fly-fishing for native fish, exploring, and photographing historic and natural beauty. During their travels, they have been exposed to and developed insights into the legends and history of New Hampshire. Cemeteries and gravestones often point the way to the weird, the unusual, the sad, the affectionate, the courageous, the fortunate, the unfortunate, the criminal, and even the humorous. "Buried New Hampshire, Historical Graves of New Hampshire's Famous, Infamous and the Odd and Unusual" is not only for those who love New Hampshire but those who love good stories.

I was just re reading my old copy of Peyton Place and thinking what happened to Grace Metalious... There's isn't much about her online, so I was happy to stumble upon your video. Your gesture was very sweet, I hope Grace appreciates it! She hadn't an easy upbringing and the monumental success of the book must have been simultaneously amazing and daunting. Salutations to you two!

I think he was killed on what is now Passaconaway road. It used to be the the main road to the Albany Intervale. I always wondered where he was buried. No markers in Passaconaway or Canada street cemetery...

He was killed on Passaconaway Road, but we haven't been able to find a grave site. David Emerson, who used to be the historian at the Conway Public Library, apparently knew where it was. David is, unfortunately, deceased.

@@filmrd Oh, that's great to to know that at least. Yeah, that's quite a pity about Mr. Emerson. I wish this had been written down. We lose so much local history

Cougars are very wary. It is probable that a small number have survived in the eastern forests despite all the endless hunting. Also, they are common in eastern Canada, and could come across the border.

This video was shot at the Worcester Centrum in 1994. At the time it was a general fishing show, latter on the flyfishing show was created and held at the Royal Plaza in Marlborough, as it is today. Rick and I were lucky enough to interview not only Lefty, but Dave Whitlock and Berry and Cathy Beck the same day. There was a wicked snowstorm that weekend and no one could leave. There was only one place to eat in the whole town and everyone from the show gathered there that evening. I can remember Lefty holding court at his table. The quilt, used as a backdrop in the video, was made by my wife Janet.

I live only 5 minutes from Brunswick, Maine, and Mountain Lions have made multiple appearances in our neighborhood. The people that owned our house before us saw one walking around their driveway in the mid 1990s. However, I didn't get to see one until 2009. I was riding with my parents down our gravel road, when all of a sudden, a huge, golden, cat-like animal with a very long, kinky tail, jumped across the road and sprinted in the woods. As the thing ran, the whole forest shook, and my family. We actually found a paw-print in the dust, which we deduced to be from a mountain lion. Later on, in 2013, a neighbor gave us a call about a mountain lion walking on his porch. We got his description, and realized it was the same type of cat. A massive cat (much bigger than his Golden Retriever), with a long tail and yellowish brown fur. While looking for scat the next morning, we found a deer leg dangling from a tree branch about 5 feet above the ground. Also, later that week, a friend of ours saw a similar animal outside her apartment window near Cooks Corner. Mountain lions are here in Maine, and given the vast number of these sightings, I have little doubt that they are breeding For those hoping to get a photograph of one of these cats, sightings are a regular occurrence (multiple times a year) up at the Penobscot Indian Reservation near Old Town, as well as along the railway tracks in Ellsworth. There is also some thought that they range along the state line near the White Mountains Forest.

I haven't been lucky enough to see one myself. I have a substantial list of sightings. I spoke to one woman who said that Fish and Game told her that she had seen a raccoon. In any case it is difficult to mistake a bobcat for a mountain lion. Thanks for sharing. Since the publication of "Catamount, A North Country Thriller", I have been contacted by quite a number of people who have shared their sightings. Little did I know that my fiction was closer to the truth that I had thought.

Raccoon? Nonsense - no resemblance. Cougars are much larger than bobcats, and don't have spots, so there is no mistaking them.

Saw one in Piermont NH one sunny morning. It was 20 feet from my car on rt 10. It was in the middle of the road in full profile, was crouched down and looked like it was stalking something in the brush. Its tail was erect, and the tip was flicking back and forth. It didn't even look at me, too focused on its next meal. It jumped at least 8 foot high and disappeared. A really beautiful animal. Called Fish and Game, and the woman told me it was a bobcat, because there were no mountain lions in NH.
