This explains why ALL the coffee spots in my city of 600K keep closing down! Not one of them can stay open, then another one takes over, on and on and on. I never understood what was going on.

Great info here! This will really help us out at our Beach Resort Hotel in the Philippines! Thanks!
I just wonder why he is not focused on repeat customers first and gaining new customers second.... Like the customer is the one paying everyone.....
all too many cafes hire a couple of sour humans. Each new person who comes in and encounters a toxic barista will vote with their feet and that is for sure but nearly impossible to tabulate. Hire people with conventional good manners. they can bring an edge, that's fine but the business is not about them.
How can we access the labour cost excel file?
This is the most helpful and simple to understand explanation of the true costs, expectations, suggestions, and realities of running a business I have ever seen. Thank you SO much!
Glad it was helpful!
agreed. this is amazing! @coffeebusinessbasics any chance you would be willing to share a template of the labour cost excel file?
I work on a target of <5% rent when assessing new venue opportunities. 10% maybe used to be workable, and might still be in busy pubs with a high bev to food ratio, but for a full service cafe and restaurant you’ll struggle to make profits at 10% rent. This is due to the very high wages costs and ‘other’ expenses. I’m convinced the main driver of businesses failing is they start the business without calculating the rent % - there are many businesses listed for sale with huge rents and they often can’t find a buyer.
so true, not enough people run the numbers before signing the lease.
@@coffeebusinessbasics or they just think they can make enough money to afford a $80,000pa rent. Not realising that they need to make min $33,000 in gross revenue each week before they even have a chance of making a reasonable profit. The reality is that Cafes need prime real estate to work, but can't afford to pay prime real estate rents...
Great video and advice
Well, I was hoping to open a patisserie & cafe in central London, but I guess that would stay a dream as I don't have that kind of money.
11. Have a nice logo and invest in branded to-go cups. You’ll have clients carrying/disseminating advertisement for your place all over town. Don’t go for plain white cups to try to save money. That’d be a lost opportunity.
LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION and low rent...and a good pool of people you can pay slave wages to and replace once they want a raise.
NOT FUNNY
@@judichristopher4604 I guess you never worked in a restaurant. 1984-2020 here.
@@bayareaartist999 EXCUSE ME!!! Not only have I worked in a Restaurant since I was 15 back in the 1969... I have also Owned a Cafe... and a Bar-B-Q stand... WHY would you be so rude and mean to say that to me?
@@bayareaartist999 The reason I said NOT FUNNY... is That person is assuming restaurant/cafe owners Have Too pay "Save Wages" (which is not a good saying these days)... and assuming they're replaced...
Good stuff man! keep the vids coming! don't be discouraged with the lower view count and subscriber base
A local coffee shop hosts regular esl events to fill out slow hours. I think a really smart move is to choose a great location in the first place.
raise sales = negotiate better cost for inventory (buy in bulk) that's the only way to go instead of cutting cost.
Brilliant. Thanks💯
Educating myself to finally do it! Taking the plunge soon. 🎉

$700,000 Turnover and you only net $15,000? Doesn't make any sense.

Superb Video, Thanks!
Hmmmm you sound Aussie??? So all figures are in $AUD?
We scored a fully fitted cafe kitchen, deep fryers, everything to start the business just walk in and start for under 5k. now we are extremely lucky but there are deals out there, now we didn't own any of the equipment the landlord did but after a year we've had to buy our own from break downs so now building. love these videos because now learning where, what and why we have a cash flow problem is my and my partners issue atm. it's great to see content like this because no idea about business let alone how to run one this channel is helping us rn in australia thank you coffee business basics.
Are these amount figures for the Australian economy? Because I can't imagine anything in America costing this little. The rent alone would probably be at least 100k per month in any desirable location. There's a reason coffee costs $8 these days.
In summary, Be consistent e.g. opening times, staffing levels Good coffee Good food Good service Good atmosphere Offer discount during quiet times Shorten menu e.g. remove unprofitable items We are thinking of removing salads, chips and rice from most dishes and offering them as sides. This should reduce food waste but also make the menu look less expensive at a glance.
I'm just researching for creators who share actionable marketing tips not just some general ones that don't actually help their audience. Your video is the first one I found to be actually useful and with actionable steps.
Hey mate, thanks for all your help so far. I'm about halfway through my second year of trading here in Wales, UK. Can you give advice/make a video on how to take things to the next level? Second location? Roast your own? Tapping into night scene? Menu enhancement? Anyway. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for your video! Could I please just ask, what was it that you did to start understanding the financial aspects of running a business? Do you have any sort of business degree? I'm really trying to understand this side of business.
Thank you for your videos, the information you share is incredibly helpful. I hope you keep going.
THANK YOU!!!
Hope your channel let more and more people get benefit! Respect ❤
High cost of coffee machine Customers traffic is only from morning till tea break at best. You don't get anymore good traffic after 3pm.

WOW! This feels divinely sent. I am finally making a plan to act on a years-long dream to own my own coffeeshop. This is the confirmation, inspiration, and information I need at the right time. Thank you!!
Hey mate, info is this video is gold! Just sent you an email about something I think you might be interested in, take a look when you get the chance.
What’s the process of interviewing the right designer for the space? I always thought doing it yourself is the way to go. Eye opening
These all seem to be general business concepts instead of coffee shop specific ideas
that’s the point ngl
Basics covered yet very intering to listen to! I´d love a more in depth dive into the topic!
Great video keep up the awesome content!
Great video. This knowledge is super basic, I would love to see you make a lot more in depth video’s on opening a cafe, that would be super interesting.
In depth like what? Your request is super basic too.
Plus vague and has grammatical errors which is super embarrassing.
