The Clash - Lost in the Supermarket [LIVE]
Death or Glory Tribute to the Clash performing Lost in the Supermarket live at The Blind Pig in Sowerby Bridge 5.5.24.
A beautiful song deeply rooted in Clash mythology. Assumed for many years to be a Mick Jones solo composition, Joe Strummer actually wrote this song for Mick. “It touched me on a personal level. Everybody thought that I’d written that song but it was one that was written by Joe. I wrote the majority of the music and Joe wrote the lyrics” said Mick Jones in Don Letts’ film 'The Last Testament - The Making of London Calling'.
Marcus Grey wrote of Joe’s songwriting in ‘Route 19 Revisited’ that “He gave his more naked and exposed songs like ‘Lost in the Supermarket’ to Mick Jones to sing” to ensure that they became associated with Mick instead. In The Armagideon Times, Mick even wrote the notes for these songs, describing Lost in the Supermarket as a “whimpering ballad”.
Joe later started taking ownership of the lyrics, telling Melody Marker in 1988 that “it was me sitting in the World’s End Flats. There’s a big supermarket next to the car park. You know when your mind goes blank and you find yourself wandering through all this bright, garishly lit stuff and you dont really know what you want or why you are in there? I always lose my shopping list”.
Regardless, the environment Joe writes about so vividly in this amazing song is far removed from his own upbringing. Marcus Grey said of the song that “the environment being new to him is what provides the awe that helps him paint such an evocative picture”, a lovely and succinct way of putting it.
The songs similarities both in title and theme to The Raincoats 1979 single ‘Fairytale in the Supermarket’ are strong, with their then drummer Palmolive being Joe Strummer’s girlfriend at the time. The guitars are lush (with at least one of them in open E tuning, and possibly high strung Nashville style) and whilst Mick wrote of London Calling as a record “there are no disco instruments on this cut”, its influence on Lost in the Supermarket are in plain sight.
The night before it was recorded, Topper went to see Taj Mahal play in London and noticed that drummer Kester Smith played a lot of snare drum beats on the floor tom instead, something which Topper did on the first half of each verse on the song. He also added some latin percussion by way of a guiro which produced a grater effect when rubbed with a piece of wood.
What you are left with is a lush pop song with swelling guitars, an almost disco beat and lyrics that, given their origin rival Stay Free for the title of " Best song ever written about plutonic love"
We dont play this song live very often but its one we love to wheel out and its gonna be great to play it every night on the London Calling dates next year.

A song we cannot wait to play every night next year, The Right Profile was a song on our early wishlist when we first formed but we never quite got to it. This song is a great way to introduce Pete Medland, part one of our burgeoning horn section for our London Calling shows! He played his first show with us on trumpet this weekend in Sowerby Bridge and we were so pleased with how it sounded th...

Yesterday morning (14.12.24), a close friend of mine and Manchester punk scene legend Stephen Doyle passed away suddenly. I was only with him last week when he came to see me (Sam, the Joe in Death or Glory) play at Bolton Socialist Club and he was in great form and good health. Death or Glory played a show in Sowerby Bridge last night and we dedicated the performance to his life, and played St...

Brand New Cadillac by the Clash, performed live at The Blind Pig in Sowerby Bridge on May 5th 2024 A Vince Taylor b-side from 1959, recorded in just one take, Brand New Cadillac is the first of 3 incredible covers across the London Calling album. Would you ever cover Magnificent Seven?
@@OurFamilyInMotion yeah we do! We haven’t shared a video yet but we will soon
You guys are fantastic. I am John and I've been listening to The Clash since 1977 when I was 16 years old. I am now 64 years old. You bring all of the excitement back that Joe Strummer and Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and topper headon brought to me through listening to their records so many years ago, it's really sad that we can't have you play in North America. I know this is a recording that was done in England. Unfortunately, North Americans don't know their music as well as the British and I always thought that way ever since The Beatles. After all, Paul McCartney said himself that he wanted to wait until he had a number one record before he decided to go to the United States on tour with the Beatles because other bands had tried it without the number one hit and they flopped. North American fans can be very fickle. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that you guys got it down. Pat, the guy that plays Joe Strummer is phenomenal as you all are, but as Joe strummer's my favorite class member, I gravitate to everything that he stood for
Played mate
Lovely dedication.
Great stuff
Reminds of when i saw them live, a long time ago!

Brilliant version guys! Best three UK R&R/Rockabilly songs of all time:- 3: Move It - Cliff & The Shads 2: Shakin' All Over - Johnny Kidd & The Pirates 1: Brand New Cadillac - Vince Taylor and The Playboys. Let me know when you're in South Wales... Newport would be good, as Joe Strummer used to be a gravedigger at our local cathedral!
Aw absolutely! Move It is incredible, love that riff and still play it nearly every time I pick up a guitar. And of course Joe Moretti of The Playboys was the guest guitarist on Shakin’ All Over, tying it very nicely to Cadillac. Great list mate, glad you enjoyed our version and thanks for listening! Oh, and great username too 😎
ロンドンコーリングサイコー😎☝️🎶🎶🎶✨✨
We agree! What a tune!
First time I listen to a tribute band until the end , you're just fuckin' awsome !
Thank you! Lots more to come on our channel in the next few months as we are performing London Calling in its entirety for the first time next year so sharing video of each song as we go through them.
This is great! Fun times
Cheers Al!
Absolutely blew me away tonight, so much attention to detail and a varied set of songs. Amazing! Can't wait to see them again!
Thank you mate. The attention to detail is something we take a lot of time with and it’s amazing people are starting to notice it more and more. See you again next year for London Calling in full hopefully! (Jan 10th)
Going to watch these gentlemen tonight with my daughter, cant wait!!
Glad you enjoyed it mate
Excelentes!!! ojalá vinieran a tocar en Argentina👋👋👋👋👋👋👋
Gracias Gustavo. We wish too
Thanks. I love The Clash and seeing them live 1982 was the best experience ever. But I am from New Orleans. Wish we had a serious Clash cover band. I would definitely go. Thanks again!
Would love to come over and play for you in NOLA. Maybe someday! Thanks for your kind words and support regardless. We will be posting videos on here regularly for as long as we are still a band so hopefully that satiates for now. Or even better, inspires a group in your area to start a Clash tribute band
Amazing!!! Killer drummer and both guitarists/lead vocalists are spot on ! Great having keys too. Maybe don’t let the bassist sing Guns of Brixton anymore lol
worse than simonon 🤣

Brilliant gig, the spirit of the Clash lives on.
RIP. Kriss Donald 🤘🏻🖤🇬🇧
Ye need a new Mick Jones, strummer is spot on
This was only our third ever gig. Our Jones is a very young lad who has dug in massively since and we couldn’t be happier with him, his voice especially. There’s some more up to date videos on our channel but thanks for the feedback. Viva Joe Strummer
@@deathorgloryclashtribute fair do's, to be fair, he didn't hit as many bum notes as Jones did in his live stuff so tell him to keep going and get that guitar slung a bit lower,,all the best Lads,,
Strummer guy fantastic with the mannerisms. Mick just needs to march a bit more on the spot and be a little bit looser overall. Remember that people hear with their eyes. Really enjoyed this! Fantastic!
Thank you! Our Mick is really digging in at the moment and has improved a lot since this was shot. This was only our 4th ever gig but there’s some more recent content on our channel.

Yeah Pursey sang White Riot. We played this show with BuzzKocks and we were planning on getting their singer to do the Jimmy Pursey bit but I think on the day we all forgot. Cheers for your support Ian.
