I love your channel , thank you so much for all the things you've shared , very very usefull !!🙏🙏🙏
@@tserofaledoloap thank you so much!! Glad it helps...🙏
Congratulations on the video! I have a question that many other people may have. For example, the articulation Dude "N" Dude "N" at time 10:11 of the video, the second Dude "N" is made only by removing the tongue of the "N" or we remove the tongue and for the next Dude "N" a new attack of the "D" sound occurs. In this case, generating two movements, one of the removal of the tongue and the other of the new articulation. I usually make the sound of the second Dude "N" only by removing the tongue from the reed. Would that be correct?
@@MRIBEIROSAX hi there... there's no right or wrong with this stuff...but for me, the 'n' sound is my tongue on the reed, to muffle/mute the sound, or 'ghost' it.. the 'dude' gets a light tonguing to start the note..tip of tongue at teeth, standard vibe, but the 'n' is the ghosted tongue on underside of reed. That's only how i do it! The best way is the way that works for you! Listen listen listen..all the answers are in the past...ironically. i found stan getz with oscar peterson trio particuarly useful! Hope that helps. Peace and progress!!
Excellent dude...... keep up the great work....shivolar
soul man! always lovely to see you :) emailing you now.. x x
This is brilliant
13:36 Johnny GRIFFIN, you sound great! lol Right here you unlocked a trick from the bag of countless cats who's technique I've never been able to figure out!! I have since wiped off my chin after my jaw up from the ground. Thanks Johnny!
Thx so much! Truly humbled and happy to share! 😊
Nice again👊
Nice info
Hi Johnny, on the off chance you see this, this recording is a tremendous gift given how hard the original album is to find. Your blues playing has always mesmerized me. I remember the first recording I heard of you was Billies Bounce from Live at the Realm. It sounds like there is a lot of Eddie in your playing on that album.
thnx
U're cool
Thanks!!👍👍
Enjoyed seeing you video, great stuff, we can never have too many nerdy sax videos. It's interesting to see your take on the ghost tonging (or as others call it 'dodon dodon'). I'm surprised to see that you only tongue the side of the reed? I was taught (back at music college in the 90s) to place the tongue on the reed (sounds great) - part of a Micheal Brecker analysis session. As you say, the Stan Getz/Oscar Peterson trio really has plenty of amazing examples. Although, one place where I remember really becoming aware of it was in Brecker's solos where he lands on a note muted, and then takes his tongue off.
@@cardboardmusic thanks for comment! No right or wrong...whatever works best! One can use whole tongue on underside of reed but (for me) its easier to just mute half! Brecker would sound great using a posicle stick! Lol
Thanks for getting this information out 😊aloha coach Mundo
Thank you!
Great explanation and video. Only thing I missed is the articulations on the"dude". Are you tonguing there, or no tonguing just air to start the note?
@@kevink8965 hi..sorry for late reply...yes, i lightly tongue on the 'Dude' but good always to practice slowly with no tongue too, air stream, but at speed obviously its impracticle. Thx for question!
Great break-down of bebop line rhythm phonetics - much needed!
Thank you for this helpful instruction. I didn‘t understand the difference between ghosting and swallowing- or is there no one?
@@29bstay06 hi there. Thx for question.. sorry for late reply..the way i hear it they are the same...
thanks very much. I appreciate your "there's lots of ways to do it" philosophy.
Thank you!
Thank You
Happy to see Niehaus and Mintzer in the collection.
Always useful and very clear mate! Thank you. Here is BK too 🍁
Thanks from Germany Heidelberg.
Parabéns! Muito útil suas informações.
Gracias!
This is most helpful! I've literally been wanting to learn this for decades! THANK YOU!!!
happy to help! sharing knowledge brings joy :)
A lot of these lines remind me of licks Joe Henderson loved to play. Nicely done, thanks.
Amazing man, I owe you a pint.
Thank you for finally making this make more sense. Now let me go practice some Charlie Parker!
Thank you!! Glad it helped :)
Fantastic vid mate. 👍🏻
Crazy I know Ive been known to spend over an hour and a half at a stretch experimenting and reinventing for myself the endless fun that is tone matching with the overtones. Love your exploration here. Thank you!!
Thank you! so glad you found it useful!!
Awesome Johnny… Love and light to you mate!
Reminds me of C.Pine, and that can only be a good thing. Nice.
Beautiful! Thanks for posting. I love your tone on soprano.
beautiful song, beautiful soprano sound
Great lesson Johnny! Love it! This articulation is used even on 16 notes, correct? Or is simplified with mostly random major accent on down or upbeat (especially when phrases changes profile)? This articulation must be the same on every tempo, correct? What about legato? In Parker articulation alternate D-T-legato and N, correct? Last: in some point seems you mute completely the note. I use to muting the 50% of the sound of the note, more or less, is that correct? Thank you a lot.
I generally practice it as 1/8th notes (the rails with which bop generally run on)..the faster the tempo becomes the more 'straightened out' it gets. it gets harder the faster the tempo..faster speeds= less tongue, less articulation.. only my way...no right or wrong!!) hope that makes sense - Listen to the records...all the answers lie there for us all :)
Fino!!!
I pee my pants dude. You should do stand up comedy! 😂Great playing btw. We should have a beer together!
Thank you! glad i could make you laugh :)
excellent content thank you for sharing
Very helpful! Thanks a lot!
so cool video, thank you so much!!
Thank you for watching! Stay tuned....lots more new exciting stuff coming soon!
Do I need to hit the tongue n not necessary? Did I understand correctly? just my English is not very good and I could have missed something
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I´d wish You were my teacher when I was 10. No one did teach me that stuff. Beeing nearly 47 years old and playing for over 25 years that instrument, it is quite hard to incorporate that new way of tounquing into my playing. But Your lesson was quite helpful! Please continuing the good stuff! Cheers from Germany!
@@laidlounge thank you!! Sorry for late reply...yes, agreed its harder as we get older...but little by little...day by day.. baby steps... I found it horribly hard and it felt most unusual...but then it all made sense!! ;)
