Slaying Brook Trout - High Desert Lake, WA (Nov 2024)
A warm November day fly fishing from my Watermaster Bruin at one of Washington's high desert lakes. Surrounded by stunning scenery, plenty of cloud cover with intermittent rays of sunshine, and temperatures in the low 60s, it was an amazing day on the water-the kind where the first fly you tie on is the last.
Setup:
- Rod: G Loomis NRX+ 4100-4
- Reel: Abel Vaya 5/6
- Fly Line: SA Amplitude MPX WF4
- Fly Pattern: Purple Balanced Squirrel Leech (Fulling Mill)

A memorable day unfolds on a scenic river in Washington State, recorded in March 2024. Watch as Parker skillfully lands a stunning native Westslope cutthroat on a streamer, setting the stage for an extraordinary day of fishing. Not to be outdone, Luke battles the fast-moving waters to hook and land a hefty Cutbow. The excitement peaks when they double up on 2 good fish - a perfect finale to our...

Footage from a recent float on a blue-ribbon river in WA state. Parker hooks up with a 21" native Cutbow and an even nicer Rainbow. All-in-all, it was a productive day of fishing!

Awesome video man! The bite was on fire! I have not learned how to fly fish yet but my buddies already have. They make fun of me because I haven't tried yet, one day! I had a good day on the lake today too, I will drop the video on Sunday morning! I liked the content so I went ahead and subscribed! Fish on and Tight lines!
@@pnwtroutslayer253 thanks for subscribing! Will check out yours & subscribe.
@@flyholics Appreciate it! Fish on and tight lines!!!
Couple months old leaves on trees 🌳
Probably on Coville Indian res.
Are you not going to eat some?
Not opposed to keeping one and I hear Brook trout are the best tasting. Requires preparations (cooler, ice, etc) and I always forget. My wife gives me enough grief for not bringing more fish home!
Nice video. You're mine sare the name of the lake?
If he told you he would have to kill you lol
@@johnmahoney7876 more like, "If I told you, some people on the internet would kill me." lol
Here are your options: wdfw.wa.gov/species-habitats/species/salvelinus-fontinalis#locations
Nice fish. Washington State?
@@Byron-nk9hj Yes, eastern.
I don't think I've ever seen anyone euro nymph from a boat. killer day! some big slabs and sunshine
@@Dawgfan74 It’s sort of a niche. Most guides dismiss the idea outright but as long as you’re willing to do your own rigging, guides should support it. They work for you (for a day).
Beatiful cuttties. Were the silver fish Steelhead or Bull Trout?
@@jeffregan1249 The silver fish was a spring run salmon. Wish it was a steelhead!
Makes me miss Washington. Nice fish man!
Thanks! WA is a special place.
Who’s your guide?
How big was the second fish? Nice
Didn't measure and my eyes tend to add 2".. at least 22"!? I caught a slightly bigger one the 2nd day of fishing but wasn't filming.
Wasn't that Claude Dallas country?
Roundabouts. Gotta carry!
Thx for the great video
What launch did you use?

Rainbows in the “O” is this above or below the tunnel? And great fish!
@@troutman007 below. Have been fighting an urge to make the 6 hour drive down from central WA the past few weekends.
@@flyholics Thanks for the info, as I rarely fish below the tunnel. Didn’t know the rainbows were that far down. And yes I too had to resist the urge….. But made it to the SFBR and landed 26.
@@troutman007 then it proved to be a solid choice! Have only made the treck down to eastern OR once. Stayed in a yurt one night. X marks the spot.
Hey! Could you share what flies are good for that river
Depends on the time of year for some flies while other patterns produce year round. Hatch chart: www.worleybuggerflyco.com/EDU/YakimaRiverInsectHatchChart.htm#gsc.tab=0
parachute fly trailing behind a Chernobyl fly Just attach the parachute on to the Chernobyl fly hook and let it trail behind 2 ft Hot set up
This is cool as shit. City boy here with so many questions… 1. There isn’t a reel on your pole… is this unique to this style of fishing? 2. I don’t know fly fishing but I have seen a river runs through it, they seemed to keep the fly in the air a lot but you set it on the water, I’m guessing the movie was lies? 3. Is your line super thick compared to normal fishing? 4. Am I seeing things or how did you get the line and bait out of the water so easily 5. Do you use bait or a lure?
Great questions! 1. There is a reel, it’s just lower than my hand on the rod. In fly fishing the reel merely holds the line, you use your hands as a reel. (Unless its a big fish) 2. The fly is only in the air when being casted. It is placed on top of the water (to imitate a bug sitting on top of the water) where the trout will eat it. 3. Fly line has a nylon core coated with plastic. This gives it weight to cast the small, unweighted or lightly weighted, flies. Essentially you are casting the weight of the line, not the weight of the lure as in traditional fishing. 4. In this video I am using 2 dry flies, so 2 flies that sit on top of the water. The splashes you see right before I set the hook are the fish coming up and eating the fly off the top. Right now, I have no lures below the surface so it’s easy to pickup and re cast 5. Lures. Fly fishing is all about using thread, feathers, wire, and other materials to imitate bugs that the fish will eat. No scent or bait is used. I’m no expert, but I’ve learned a few things. I would suggest looking up Mad River Outfitters on UA-cam. They have a series that teaches all about fly fishing. It’s where I learned to fly fish! Tight lines!
@@flyholics thanks for the awesome answers. I appreciate the info and time!
Nice tunes, nice fish awesome day
Thanks! It was my first time at an alpine lake and it didn’t disappoint!
i went on the 14th i caught 6 white fish and only one trout
Have had more than a couple of days like that!
What stream is this? I’m going to Idaho and really want to catch a bull trout!
Shoot me an email (luke@flyholics.com) and I'll share the spot.
Great day at the river
That was cool
What section of river is this?
Awesome video, epic hook set lol
Thanks man! It was a nice feeling after a long cold day of nothing 😂
I think I saw you the other day when you fished there.. do you have to hike a fairly steep hill to get down to that hole?
Could be. Feel free to shoot me an email: luke@flyholics.com
Okay did you have an old channel named riverdog?
Nope!@@raymonddoerr2523
Okay he does Yakima river stuff on UA-cam too, his channel is riverdog outfitters. Nice fish by the way, beautiful.
@@raymonddoerr2523 Looked him up. He's a spin fisher!
What river is that bro?
This is a few miles below the confluence of Kelly Creek / Clearwater River; Northern ID.
Awesome video mate!
Thanks! I was close to hanging up the streamer to Euro Nymph. Luckily I stuck with the streamer for a few more casts.
Dude awesome clip! Your net crew was on point!
Thanks! Yea the net girl was on point. lol
That'll keep you on the water an extra couple of hours. 🐟
It did EXACTLY that!
Great action!
Awesome west slope! (I think)
Thanks William! This one was definitely unique. WA westslope cutthroat are generally shorter and chubbier. This one was long and slim. Almost reminded me of a Lahotan.
amazing
Where’d yah catch it!? 🤐
Nice fish Parker, my buddy and I hooked some good ones today too.
Beautiful cutthroat, crazy how deadly the euro nymph is in Washington, not many folks doing it compared to back east.
Thanks! Yes, especially during spring runoff when the flows are up.
Looks like the farmlands of the Yakima if I’m not mistaken..
That it is.
There’s some dandies in that section man. Tight lines brotha.
@@raymonddoerr2523 Nice, haven't spent much time fishing the farmland stretch. Mostly fish above it. Cheers!
Cool very
Nice catch!
Good stuff! Looks like some beautiful trout and an awesome day. Earned yourself a new sub. Hyped to see some more fly fishing!
