Testing Concrete Cubes: IS 456:2000 Explained
1. Apparatus Required
Cube molds: Standard size 150 mm × 150 mm × 150 mm (as per IS 516).
Compression Testing Machine (CTM): Capable of applying gradual load up to failure.
Tamping rod: 16 mm diameter, 600 mm long, with a rounded end.
Weighing balance: For material measurement.
Curing tank or water bath.

2. Sampling and Preparation of Test Cubes
1. Concrete Sampling
Collect concrete samples from the mix or batch according to IS 1199:1959.
The sample must be representative of the batch.
2. Filling the Cube Molds
Apply oil or release agent inside the cube molds to prevent adhesion.
Fill the molds in three layers.
Compaction: Compact each layer with a tamping rod, applying 35 strokes per layer. For higher workability mixes, mechanical vibration can be used.
After the final layer, level the surface and remove excess concrete using a trowel.
3. Demolding and Curing
After 24 hours, carefully remove the cubes from the molds.
Transfer the cubes to a curing tank or water bath and keep them fully submerged in water at 27 ± 2°C until the test.

7days and 28 days
5. Testing Procedure
A. Test Age
Cubes are tested at 7 days and 28 days to evaluate early and final strength.
B. Preparation for Testing
Remove the cubes from the curing tank just before testing.
Wipe off any surface water and ensure the cubes are dry.
6. Compression Testing
Place the cube on the compression testing machine (CTM) with smooth sides facing up and down.
Ensure the cube is perfectly centered in the machine to apply uniform load.
7. Applying Load
Apply the load at a constant rate of 14 MPa per minute (as per IS 516).
Continue loading until the cube fails (cracks or crumbles).
8. Recording Results
Note the maximum load at failure (in kN).
