    Please, if you’re an 80s babe, refer to her as Virginia Andrews. V C Andrews books were completed after she died, and from what I understand they read very differently. Cannot confirm if they do indeed read differently as I’ve only read the ten, but there is a distinction (same as Stephen King vs Richard Bachman)

    Pretty bad take. Alicent didn’t set this all up. Rhaenyra did. Alicent did everything she was supposed to and acted to protect her children. Rhaenyra basically did nothing to 1) learn how to rule, 2) secure her throne, 3) placate any fears Alicent should have had for the life of her children. Anyone who studies medieval history (which this is based on) would know that the most dangerous thing anyone could have is a claim to the throne. Yes Otto was ambitious but Alicent was completely right in protecting her children. Rhaenyra should have never left kings landing in season 1 to go to dragon stone and once Aegon was crowned she should have made a deal. Instead she pursued her claim which left all the dragons dead.

    • @fortheculture657
      @fortheculture657 Місяць тому

      I agree that Rhaenyra shouldn’t have left kings landing. But in her defense she wasn’t raised to believe she had to secure her throne. All of Westeros had bent the knee and sworn fealty to Viserys. Also, she grew up in a peace time in which war was a foreign concept (to Viserys too). I gotta disagree about Alicent protecting her children. She was not a good mother. The only one she seemed to care about was Helaena and that’s largely cuz Helaena was sensitive. She mostly ignored Aegon and Aemond unless they were in trouble. She was never seen being nurturing or supportive. They both were spoiled troublesome kids and that’s a result of her lack of parenting. You can see it when they became adults. Aemond clearly has mommy and anger issues; Aegon was vulgar and abusive to women. She was a trash mom. Her only interest in him seemed to be getting him on the throne so she could ultimately push him aside and rule with her father through Aegon.

      @@fortheculture657Viserys only had the crown because the lords of the kingdom would not give it to a woman (Rhaenys) and so up to that point Rhaenyra should have known that her ascendancy would not be secure without gaining some type of support. The only support she really has outside of her immediate family are the Velaryons and she proceeds to jeopardize the relationship by cuckolding and “killing” their son and producing bastards (another massive faux pas). While I am not going to argue that Alicent deserves a mother of year award, from the moment she married Viserys she tried to maintain a good relationship with Rhaenyra but Rhaenyra was largely petulant and treated Aegon like a usurper from the moment he was born which would make it very reasonable for Alicent to want to take measures to protect her children who would always be threats to Rhaenyra’s crown. My main issue with the show is that season 1 was definitely pro Black vs Green but there was some ambiguity while season 2 uses cheap tricks and shortcuts. Alicent should not have been the one to apologize or at the very least Rhaenyra needs to have some introspection about the faults of her younger years and how they led her to this place and to destroy their dynasty.

    • @Gizmo1981
      @Gizmo1981 Місяць тому

      @@fortheculture657also I don’t agree with the idea that war over the throne would have been a foreign concept as it already happened between King Maegor the cruel and Aegon the uncrowned. Also that was the reason the old king called the great counsel (he feared that if he just chose a successor there would have been civil war)

    • @fortheculture657
      @fortheculture657 Місяць тому

      @@Gizmo1981 yeah, Rhaenyra was a bratty teenager ( but isn’t that all teens?). It was hard to accept not only that her father started a whole new family, but with her BEST friend. I think that would have sent most teen girls into a tizzy. Viserys made a lot of mistakes which eventually fell on Rhaenyra’s shoulders. Her worst crime was naïveté. Adult Alicent straight schemed and was extremely judgmental (and jealous) of Rhaenyra, when she should have been mad at Otto for putting her in such a predicament. She lambasted Rhaenyra for sleeping with Cole and then turned around did the same thing. She judged the Targaryens for their ‘ strange customs’ and then turned around and married Aegon to his sister. Shes a walking contradiction. I can’t with her.

    • @Gizmo1981
      @Gizmo1981 Місяць тому

      @@fortheculture657that’s because you’re largely viewing this applying 2024 morals and standards rather than in-universe morals and standards. In-universe the greatest Targaryen ruler had been the old king who took the throne at 14 and made infinitely better decisions than Rhaenyra. Whether as a teenager or adult every single decision she made at every point was bad. Sleeping with Cole, her uncle, cuckolding Laenor so obviously and producing 3 obvious bastards, risking the relationship with the velaryons, marrying Daemon, leaving Kings landing for dragonstone, getting no-name dragonseeds to ride her two most powerful dragons, etc. Viserys was a bad king and bad father but Rhaenyra hadn’t done anything to really secure her claim. Alicent married the king and then she did everything right- she was loyal, tried to make amends with Rhaenyra (even to the point of believing her lies and selling out her father), took care of her husband when he was unwell, did her duty and gave him many potential heirs, was cordial with the lords of the kingdom, and helped Viserys rule. When she slept with Cole she wasn’t the heir to the iron throne and was not married so it’s not actually hypocritical. Everything else is just poor writing by the showrunners to try and make this a cookie cutter good vs evil story. In the book it’s pretty straightforward that they all are pretty bad.

    This whole thing strikes me as odd bc in Flowers in the Attic and the books that came after Corinne always maintained that Olivia hated her and always hated her. She told stories about being whipped and locked in the attic as a child. Usually because of both her parents insane devotion to religion, not even just Olivia. Additionally, John Amos was employed in the house throughout Cathy and the other kids’ time there, they frequently mention him by name. Even when John Amos appears later, he attributes the religious zealotry to Malcolm himself. Plus, Corrinne admitted to poisoning the kids later on.

    • @fortheculture657

    In petals in the wind Corrine claimed that she’d never meant to kill Cory or the other children, she said she was trying to make them sick enough that her parents would let them go to the hospital and then she could take them away from the house. I don’t think it’s ever confirmed if that was a lie or not.

    It’s possible that the rat poison was shown to foreshadow events to come. They had a rat problem around the time Corrine and the children arrived so the rat poison may have been legit at first. As events progressed and characters spiraled it makes sense that it was used to poison the children since they had already established it was on hand.

    I’ve been biting my tongue, but I have something to say about the actress they chose to play Olivia, she might not fit with the description but the actress is quite… unconventionally attractive, especially with how they style her hair in a way that wouldn’t compliment her features. When I heard that she’s not considered to be very attractive, I can see where they’re coming from. This is awkward to say cause I don’t believe that anyone in the film is unattractive, but the way they styled her, I think they got the point across that she’s not supposed to be desirable

    I think Corrine did want to marry Rockford- he’s a socially acceptable “out”. Mal is dead, Joel is gone, she knows she wants out of that house, and in the 1930s he’s the best choice.

    The biggest disconnect is that although Corinne is impulsive, overindulged and short sighted (poisoning her father in Episode 2), she’s not stupid and she feels an intense loyalty and love towards her brother and she saves him. That woman wouldn’t lock her kids in the attic and poison them 20yrs later. She would lie and manipulate but she would do it to save them and give them a better life. How did a woman who saved her brother from conversion therapy and torture become the woman who poisoned her children and killed Cory?!
