You explained those methods perfectly. Breaking down the mechanics of a lead system can be a bit complex for New Carp Anglers? As they will want to fish safe and for the wellbeing of the carp as we carp Anglers find paramount to our fishing set ups. Well done for creating your video blog. Big respect as as I couldn't do a video lol 🤣👌👌👌
Honestly pal, your thought process is to die for. I'm with you every step of the way wrt to fish welfare..... Cap tilt to you mate.,,🤛
Spot on mate !
Fair point m8 makes sense
I've thought loads about this over the years. Surely if the fish is tethered by the leader loop end, it can never escape whether the lead is there or not as the rig can never pass the obstruction/snag. The only benefit of dropping the lead is removing the chance of the lead snagging while the fish is swimming around trailing line or a leader. In this case, you could argue that keeping the lead and almost hoping it gets snagged is the best way for the rig to be able to slide up towards the leader/mainline connection and free itself leaving the fish to trail just the rig.
Well put mate. I never drop my lead. And I still fish safe.
What about safety of shockleaders?
No rig is 100% safe and ever will be. We are still using a hook to catch a fish!!!! You can’t sugar coat that with safe methods. At the same time, I feel for young anglers who don’t understand the engineering side of rig safety as it goes on and on. One moment something is safe and legal in most lakes. The next minute it’s banned
By the look it’s not a 24v but more the 12V?
No it’s the 24v
With smaller carp and especially silt dwellers with softer mouths the swinging motion when playing them can cause mouth damage. Use the lightest lead possible and consider do dumping the lead in this case.
I've been using a heli tubing kit and for me that's safer for the fish but would rather not drop the led aswell I do agree
The 2nd version is the one that I've always used. Getting rid of the lead but not the line I think it's a bead idea because it can tangle in anything but getting rid of the leadcore + whatever leftover and the lead remaining only with the rig itself it's the best approach when it comes to fish safety. :-)
long time no see Mr Hollins well said
The heli safe was just created in order to ensure the angler catches the fish with no regards to fish safety, just another money making fiasco. Ide rather lose a fish and know its safe than lose a lead and get a fish tangled up and die because its trailing around a massive length of leadcore. Fish safety should be a priority especialy in lakes that stock a good amount of big carp.
Well said mate should only drop.your lead in weedy waters or snags.
Using lead core and ronnie not very fish friendly to much metal going into the fish mouth
Brilliant video. I totally agree with you. The lead is the only way to discharge the top bead. I also believe that the majority of commercially available top beads do not discharge as they should. I find they tend to slide up to the top splice of the leader before they discharge. I now splice my bottom loop of the leader with a diamond eye threader (for elasticating top kits on poles etc) to make the bottom splice the length I want. This locks the bead in place and stops them sliding up the leader.
Put 20 grams lead between de sleeve en the swivel.. Best of 2 worlds
I have fished with your method and it works
Been sayin this since the heli unsafe came out the heli rig relies on the lead to move the top bead your comments are spot on ive 40+ years carp fishing shame profits come b4 safety
You’re bang on correct, My thoughts exactly. These drop off systems are designed so you go back to their brand to buy more because it’s “safe”. It’s all about money
Dropping leads in the lake isn’t good full stop… so all u carp anglers who think you no best dumping the lead isn’t good
Never considered this to be fair, good thinking
The film "Saturday Night Sunday Morning" brought me here
Couldn't agree more. Never understood this philosophy. Better for the fish, the pocket and the environment. Wonder how many ton of lead is at the bottom of some of these popular carp lakes. I can understand that if the lead gets caught up while playing a fish this could be a problem, but all you need is a safety C clip on the lead. Job done.
My silt qt lake is about 1ft May bit a tiny bit more. How far should I move bead up leader. Please help. Videos are big help. Thank u.
Maybe a 15 grams counterbalance weight tied shot on the hook style on the helisafe will make the safety bead pop off... It's gonna be a weird setup😂😂😂
I came up with a idea for a safe inline system: get 2 ring swivels, put your inline lead on your mainline, then put a ring from the quick link swivel trough the line, then tie the other normal ring swivel on the end of the mainline by the swivel side, then tie a large leads hot shot on the hook style on the bottom ring as a counterbalance... The theorie is: when the line breaks the fish can get rid of the lead... Then the large counterbalance leads hot pulls the whole line away from the fish leaving him only with the rig... 🐟🐟🐟
C CLIPS with heavy ring and a heli sleeve is the way to go won't drop a lead unless it hits a snag or weed
As the inventor of the first commercially available drop off system for heli-rigs this (the Atomic Chopper Dropper) I take issue with this. I get where you're coming from but it's unwarranted. Take a leadcore leader on a leadclip and you get cut off. The carp is still trailing the leadcore and that is perfectly ok with anglers. This is no different. Losing the lead in heavy weed will bank more fish safely. The amount of fish that have problems with cut offs is tiny. In 35 years of carp fishing I've never come across a leadcore teathered carp.
This is a tough lake. Don’t bother unless comfortable fishing in silkweed. It’s a nightmare. And also you have to cope with the size of Horseshoe and fish location. It however is a beautiful place to fish. Peaceful and tranquil. Also has plenty of beautiful Big tench and Rudd.
Help me out loads as am starting to fish the helicopter system so much better rig setting if fish spit it out. On a spinning rig it's amazing always kicks back out with the write ballance bait.
Try fishing heavy using 20ib line and avoiding cracking off or cut offs in the first place. Losing leads assists in landing the carp. Arguments for and against for both ways. Personally I'll lose the leads, but use very heavy line and barbless hooks in a size 6.
Spot on, perfect sense 👍🏻
Fantastic video mate changed the way I’ll setup. Well presented with a good attitude. Fishing needs more of this.
Good video and well explained but I have to disagree. The point you are making is true and accurate but only if the fish has already dumped the lead during the fight and you then somehow snap off. If you snap off during the fight when the fish has already dumped the lead and is now up on the surface then your mainline is simply not strong enough for the job. The question of fish safety in all of this is not about whether you should or shouldn’t dump the lead. It is whether you are using strong enough mainline. What you have explained very well in this video would ONLY happen if the fish picks your bait up, dumps the lead during the fight and then you break your mainline. But why would you break at this point? The fish is now on the surface having dumped the lead. It is away from the snags - all you have to do is tire the fish out and reel it in. Again - the fish won’t be near the snags as it has dumped the lead and is now fighting up on the surface. If you are breaking off during the fight and after the lead has been dropped then your mainline is not strong enough for the situation and you are not fishing safely.
Good vid!
Spot on pal
Thankyou for the video
I see your point however once you dumped the lead the fish rises to the surface AWAY from where the snags are if you keep the lead the fish 90% of the time stay low and end up snagging themselves up dump the lead and the fish will hit the surface sometime they hit the surface before you even get to your rod once on the surface there away from snags I've lost more fish not dropping leads thinking on it can't remember ever loosing a fish after dumping the lead. Good video and some very interesting comments. Tight lines all
well explained and spot on mate👍
Thanks
While I absolutely agree with this, I can’t help but feel like the length of leadcore is another primary factor in being unsafe. There is no need for a leader to be longer than 2ft, whilst there are arguments for longer, none absolutely justify its need to be longer without compromising a fish’s safety
On some waters they even want rig tubing to be a minimum of 3ft in length. What a mission it was trying to thread your line through 3ft of tubing!!!
Can you attach the Heli Safe on the Mainline and not a leader?
Good point made in favour of keepin* the lead on a helecopter rig well done
Very good point that I hadn't thought of. Nice one, Adam.
Just getting back into fishing again And been looking at this system. Not given me 2nd thoughts I've always kept them lead on
Absolutely spot on. I fish my chod this way so if in the case of break off the fish literally has a 2inch hooklink in its mouth. Brilliant video
Agree 100% bud
People only drop the lead in weedy situations because when a fish swims into the weed with the lead your pulling against the lead and not the fish so the fish has a better chance of dropping the hook. So all these youtube carpers that preach 'drop the lead' do not have carp safety as a priority in their fishing it's more important for them that they land the fish.
