E2215 : From BIM to FM - Curating the Data Required
Rick has over 30 years of experience as an entrepreneur in delivering software and web-based information services. Rick started in the late 1980’s developing a business for an environmental law publishing company that had a side interest in construction lead publishing.
Next, he turned his attention to the construction industry and launched ConFax Publishing, the first information service to distribute construction sales leads electronically. After Southam Inc. purchased ConFax in 1995, Rick and his partners launched Ingenium Technologies that was focused on software development of information technologies for the construction industry. As Co-Founder and CTO of Ingenium, Rick developed the first successful web-based software as a service (SaaS) application for sales management in the construction industry. This service was acquired by McGraw-Hill and became the industry standard for construction lead management.
Following these successes, from 2011, Rick invested this experience in efforts that led to founding BuiltSpace.
Rick is both the CTO and President of our company, leading both business and technology strategy for us.

Ever since I started this podcast, I have talked to many professionals about their experience, and their BIM adoption journey. Some of those were Project Designers and consultant and some of them were general and specialized contractors. I have realized that many times there is a lot of communication gap between the ones who use the technology to design and the ones who use the technology to co...

    Most MEP firms I've spoken to have ignored the information side of this program entirely. 10-15 years on and they're sill using a "hybrid" Revit/CAD workflow. No schedules. No working duct/pipe systems. No formulas in their families. CAD Links and Imports everywhere. Text instead of tags. 2D rectangles instead of equipment families. And they're hostile to any of that changing. I've passed on job offers because of this.

    Can you share a dynamo script to cut multiple beams with one reference plane/grid?

    40mm is just over an inch and a half. 76.2mm is 3 inches. Don't forget, 1 inch = 25.4 mm. Not deliberately correcting you just making you aware of how construction can get confusing very quickly over very simple matters.

    Your questions, how much bearing for a joist on a masonry wall. Soft skills - think of the question; is it clear or ambiguous; will the listener readily understand it; is it likely to be in his practicable construction knowledge set; is the joist allowed to sit freely on the masonry wall or will a joist hanger suffice; can the joist be built into masonry wall as the work progresses?

  • @tonyallen9213
    @tonyallen9213 Рік тому

    Tread cautiously with BIM. You are only as good as the programme e.g. structural steelwork - has the programmed been set up to account for baseplates, ground bolts. black bolts, cleats, framing plates. Too often the programmer only sees the main H beams at the expense of everything else.

    Chetna, a major problem with IPD's is ensuring that there is the "correct staff fit". Someone has to lead, yes, but too many "alphas" is a recipe for disaster as that is not true collaboration!

    Great video. I am mostly familiar with Revit, I can use it fluently. I know bits of Autocad like modelling gears and stuff, I am looking into using it architecturally. It sounds to me that for architecture specifically, AutoCAD to Revit is like Microsoft Paint is to AutoCAD. Doing everything manually in AutoCAD sounds like a chore, but I guess it can help you to remember and understand your own drawings better, build a better relationship with your own projects.

    When importing AutoCad into Revit make sure you do the following: 1) Overkill command in autocad. Gets rid of double lines, 2) proxygraphics set to 1 in autocad. 3) no not import dwg bring your main revit file. Import into a temp project file. Why? Bringing in autocad file especially from a manufacturer will add unwanted line types to your file. 4) use that temp file to modify your line weights. Just some basics. My pet peeve is complete details drawn with filled regions - Lazy drafting!
