The Rogue (Original Fantasy Film) | Remastered
Yup, this is basically a reupload of The Rogue, since I wasn't completely happy with the original result. I think I worked myself a bit into a corner with my deadline (I had set for myself, but it can be stressful feeling like you have to post something soon because you haven't done so in forever).
In the original, which I am still proud of btw, the colours were very dark at some points and the sound editing was all over the place. Also, Aeris' lantern wasn't lit, which bugged me.
I won't take down the original, I really loved all of the lovely comments I received on it, and it would be sad for them to be gone.
The moral of the story is: Screw deadlines. At least those set by yourself. Sure, they can be useful and help you outlining your project, but they shouldn't be set in stone. Just ends up driving you crazy once time is running out.
So, this is the version of The Rogue that was always meant to be posted, and if you rewatch it (or watch it for the first time), thank you so much and I hope you enjoy.

Hi for the first time in 2024 :) I decided to make use of the rare, snowy days, hopefully you enjoy. Sometimes waiting really is the solution. I wrote this poem a few months back, and thought that filming it in the snow would match the mood best. So, I put it on the back burner, and hoped for snow. "People call me many names, the most well known of them all being Aeris The Rogue." Aeris The Rogue is a made-up name... But who is Aeris really? Some fine, creepy minstrelsy for the forest of despair; without context one might well be moved to sympathy for the red-haired swordswoman fleeing for her life through the woods, hunted and haunted by witches and worse. With context... well, spoilers. In any case, tis a nifty video which puts me back in the Halloween mindset, which is much missed over November (even if the title does give me a strange image of you covering Ke$ha songs.) More seriously though, quality singing, lyrics, lighting and editing contrive to make an intriguing trailer and music video in its own right. Nice, nice and thrice nice.

    (Potential spoilers to follow, scroll back up if you're not finished watching.) One question I used to ask when watching horror movies or hearing ghost stories and the like; why does the protagonist never strike back? Why suffer the stings and arrows of some churlish grumpkin rather than whack them on the snoot? You provide a fine answer in this film with the laughter of those Robin finds along the road; fight or flight, you're merely a diversion for something more powerful... but then at the end that becomes the unstoppable force meeting the immovable object when Robin refuses the game. That was the moment when her character truly became compelling, I think; malice without apology, she is who she is and if you don't like it you'd probably get stabbed one way or another. She'd make an excellent viking. I like the lighting, a cheerless grey, neither light nor dark; there's no joy in the woods, it's a fitting labyrinth for lost souls to wander in. Compounded by fine smoke effects, nightmarish whispering, very impressive monster and magic effects and, at the same time, good old fashioned, grounding shots of the dread-forest. I'm rambling as ever but suffice it to say, you've wrought a fine sinister atmosphere and have outdone yourself again, there's a marked increase in quality even from The Lady of the Forest. Sharp editing and expert use of sinister faces are also worth complimenting. (Frankly, Sage's journey through the woods seems downright pleasant compared to this.) Excellent acting and singing, Robin is easy to dislike, as is proper, and Aeris is all too easy to like, as is probably less proper; It was cool seeing her again. It must be said. They and everyone else is very distinct. There's always a sense of each character being... each character, if that makes sense. There's never a moment where you think: 'Julia in wig #2' has appeared, suspension of disbelief is maintained and that's perhaps the chief requirement in such a film as this. 'Sign it to me and you'll never know fear again.' - There we are, the driving force behind each stab and swing of her blade, each defiance cast in the face of decency, the boundless and murderous anger and the reckless bargain struck with the 12th Demon King. How she might come to miss her fear as the years wear on. Excellent work as ever and well worth the wait. Nice, nice and thrice nice.

      @@squirerichard2710 Thank you so much for this ☺️ Reading your comment really makes me appreciate all of the effort and time I put into this, it makes everything feel worth it. Definitely made my day. I think this is the first film I wrote without any redeemable characters in it (I mean, the ghost girl was just a hallucination, poor thing), so it's good to hear that it still worked, even without a hero. I sure love my villains, they are very fun to act. That's why I didn't kill Robin off, as originally planned. She's even more fun to write for than Aeris. While Aeris is patient, can show restraint and is mostly unbothered (and yet likely more evil than Robin), Robin is a raging, violent mess without a filter who does as she pleases. Now more than ever.

    I've said it before and I'll say it again, the improvement demonstrated in your newer works from where you were before (which was nifty enough in its own right) is impressive indeed. Your blue, glowing fae incarnaton was a surprise to see in just how magical an image you present, which also goes for the lighting of the forest background; altogether, a beautiful fantasy-exterior which takes on a different and haunting subtext beside the very human inner turmoil the poem describes. The other fleeting roles you play were also nifty, you can pull off horns far better than I can. (I know you won't believe me but it's true.) 'I'm a monster perhaps' sounds like something anyone whose experience with love has not been the linear, storybook tale of perfection that (Disney adapted) fairytales would have us believe, might be tempted to think. Your lines: 'Oh, how I long to be free, All this love and affection suffocates me, So I push you away, Makes me wish you would stay' could not help but resonate. The grass is always greener everywhere except where you're standing, and the heart may well not be wise enough to want anything beyond the fantasy. I appear to be rambling again, though in a sense that may be to your credit; your poem is a wise one and leaves me pondering deep thoughts after hearing it. 'I just want to dance.' Indeed, joy is tempting and whether it's enough of not, it's often all that can be grasped at in the moment. I do worry sometimes that in this day and age, people following a will-o-wisp might hope they're being led to a grasping swamp. I'll cease my whitters and close with the true and traditional: Nice, nice and thrice nice.

    This makes me feel slightly guilty for watching it whilst sat next to a radiator. That aside however, I very much enjoyed this; somehow having the tragedy of it walking hand in hand with the serenity of the music and snowscape makes it all the more haunting. The world around her is very much normal, people come and go and yet there she is, for whatever grim reason, consigned to the cold. What's interesting is that depending on the interpretation, she could be anything from a restless spirit doomed to haunt the outside, to a woman who has chanced to become homeless, or perhaps first one and then the other, or neither. As you often tell me, there's more story here than we're told, which makes for a fine mystery to ponder. As ever, excellent work with the costume, editing and acting; you compound the impact of your well written poem by selling the sadness and resignation in your narration, as well as by your mournful expressions. Nice, nice and thrice nice. (I must admit, I can't help but envision outtakes in which you're in-character and melancholy one moment, then yelling at passing planes overhead in the next.)

    • @notromeosjuliet4837
      @notromeosjuliet4837 10 місяців тому

      Thank you, and I really like your interpretation. It's pretty much what I had in mind for the character's backstory, it's almost like she's trapped in a kind if purgatory. This time around the planes were rather quiet, unfortunately I filmed it not too far from a road, so there was the occasional speedster in the background. I yelled at them. While it's annoying it also brings in some levity, still glad it didn't happen a lot, otherwise someone had been forced to gather my frozen remains from the woods.

    (Potential spoilers to follow, if you've not finished, read no further.) Magnificent work and no mistake; I've probably said this before in other videos, but the level of improvement from the time of 'The Fool's Journey' (which was impressive enough in its own right) is considerable indeed; not just in terms of editing and nifty effects, but the standard of your acting is impeccable in this film, and you have great chemistry with yourself... (I am hilarious)... which in practice ultimately makes the tale all the more heart-rending. Even having read the script the tragedy of it struck true. Daphne and Phoebe, towards the end, kind of give the impression of an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object. Each one is so much defined by their wants and natures that the other ultimately becomes anathema to them, and bound together as they are by their friendship, they ultimately curse each other, and all for utterly human (or fairy) reasons. That's better writing than I can pull off, I'll gloomily admit. It's a curious thing indeed that Daphne cursed Phoebe for what she did, and rightly so to no small degree, and yet the first thing she does upon being freed is to do the exact same thing as Phoebe did... though, of course, the context is slightly different. Recompense rather than theft. At the same time though, are Phoebe's so surprising? Effectively banished to the woods with an eternity of pointless tasks and the scorn of her peers to endure, it's hardly surprising she snapped. I do wonder if Daphne's experience of the woods would ultimately turn out the same way. On the technical side of things, the effects made for impressive sights, and wisely were not overused; each serving the story. My favourite is Daphne's finger-troubles during her tree-ification, as well as Polyxo's entrance which was marvellously creepy. Also, as ever, the lighting, the costumes, the music, work marvellously. I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting, but for the time being I'll end by saying that was well worth the wait, and made for an especially fine watch around the witching hour, as seemed proper. Nice, nice and thrice nice.

      Thank you so much, I'm beyond happy you enjoyed it☺️ It's good to hear that all of the efforts paid off. Have to admit that I'm guilty of having a not so small Daphne bias, but you are right about her viewing the faerie world through rose coloured glasses and having the tendency to lack consideration. Fascinating how other's impressions can change the way you look at your own story, I certainly appreciate it. I like the way everyone experiences a story in a different way and how there are always multiple ways to look at and interpret things. And once again, thanks for this amazing comment.

    In keeping with the theme of three that's meet for such a video, there are three particular signs of quality about this take: 1) Tis something new; you've wrought a completely new take, much distinct from the first. Nothing copied or recycled, nothing overly familiar. It's impressive to do the same project twice and achieve two resonating yet individual results. 2) There are signs of your creative development here, there and everywhere; from the picture quality to the costume design to the visual effects to the acting and strength of the narration, your work continues to improve (which is all the more a fine thing as it was pretty impressive to begin with.) 3) Energy; no calm buildup or civil(ish) future planning between the witches-three; there's mischief to be done and that warrants the thunder, dread-music and impassioned chanting; this time your witches give the impression of the storm personified rather than a triune of monsters and it works very well indeed. Nice, nice and thrice nice. (Is that a pun, in this context?) Splendiferous Halloween.

    This particular monologue, methinks, is a fine one to redo and measure yourself and your progress against; there's definitely advancement to be seen, I dare say, and above all you've conveyed very well (once again) the mental anguish of the eponymous Hamlet; this looks like the monologue as was intended rather than, as can be all too tempting with quotable Shakespeare, a work of 'I'm reciting the cool thing'. Furthermore, you've put your expressions to good use, like before, as I recall but it's worth mentioning again; you've properly thrown yourself into the role and the subtle visuals and poignant speech both work to sell the scene. As I probably said 'nice, nice, and thrice nice' for the last one, I'll have to up the ante to Nice, nice and nice to the power of ten, or something. Yes. So... how many planes pestered you during shooting this time?

    • @notromeosjuliet4837
      @notromeosjuliet4837 Рік тому

      Thank you😊 Well, but no thanks to the plane question, it made me laugh way too hard and I ended up hitting myself on the knee. Of course the planes bothered me, some mosquitoes as well, but to a lesser degree. Likely because I pretty much showered in mosquito spray and turned myself into a human moth ball. Why doesn't anti-plane spray exist? And yes, I have to agree, it isn't that easy not to fall into the I'm-reciting-this-cool-Shakespeare-speech trap. Especially with this one, and you don't want to turn it into a cliché, you'll want to be sincere. To be honest, when I filmed this speech for the first time, I don't think I fully grasped it. Now I'm still not sure if I fully understand it, and it can probably mean different things to different people. But I understand it more, which might also be due to additional life experience. That's one of the main reasons why I like to revisit things. When you grow as a person your perception adapts. Nice to the power of ten sounds, well, nice, but I think I prefer thrice nice. It's got that special something.

      Thank you, I always enjoy reading your comments. When it comes to remaking monologues I did before I sometimes wonder if it's going to be repetitive, but especially when it comes to Shakespeare, redoing a scene can be very tempting. You always end up discovering something new when reading a Shakespeare play again, and as an actor I'm trying my best to do it justice. I'm also planning on remaking the Macbeth witches this autumn, I don't want to promise anything yet because I tend to be slow in terms of editing, but maybe I'll be able to have it uploaded by Halloween.

      Hi Jeffrey, thank you for staying in touch. A few weeks ago I filmed an updated version of "To be or not to be", which still needs to be edited. I'm also still in the process of editing my big project, hopefully I'll be done with it and able to release it by the end of this month. I initially planned on releasing it by the end of September, things have been taking longer, though. Maybe I'll upload the monologue some time next week. Apart from that, things have been alright. I hope you are also doing well.

    Yorick is something of a victim of his own success, I fear; the trademark, Shakespearean skull; poster-pate of the plays to the effect that his own scene gets overshadowed. Hamlet is rife with people who, like the eponymous fellow of infinite jest, cease to be or have ceased to be, and of course, there is no answer from the fleshless mazzard and all his once-beloved skullduggery (I am hilarious) is gone because that, as the play reminds us through the deaths of most of the principal cast, is how the world works. Even factoring in ghosts who want things, the sting of death is no less painful. Your interpretation is a nifty one indeed, and quite interesting in that there's a curious, resigned ease about it, the regret and sadness is largely muted, which seems all to the good as at this point in the play I can well imagine Hamlet is worn down. He has moved past his early shock and is likely so overwrought that perhaps his mad act is not entirely forced, or at least is so familiar that plucking skulls from the ground and monologuing to them is as casual as buying stamps. Perhaps at this point, he also has a sense of how little the world of the living has left for him. Your attire and look for this monologue also work well with such an image in mind, a regal look yet somber and subdued. That said, whoever it was you got to play Yorick had some interesting ideas about the costume, so to speak. If that's how his skull is adorned I can only guess how he looked in life. As ever, nice, nice and thrice nice.

      Since your comment made me laugh, I can assure you, that you are indeed hilarious. I happen to like dad jokes, sometimes I make some myself. About the skull in question, well, it usually wears a crown (the one with the amethysts, I've used it a bunch of times in my videos, and I'll keep using it some more), but I've also put candles on top of it, so that's why it's full of wax. It's the only sizeable skull I own, still a bit on the small side. I should probably get more skulls, it's a constant state of Halloween in my room anyway. Anyway, I'm glad you liked my video, I always enjoy reading your analyses.

Fortunately university fees are rather cheap in Germany, so there shouldn't be many repercussions from not getting a degree. We'll see. I still got some projects lined up, fingers crossed that I'll be able to release them in a timely manner.

    I dare say you've gotten more skilled on the acting front (and you were pretty impressive to begin with.) With this monologue in particular, however, showing the eponymous Hamlet at the height of his emotional turmoil thanks to his impossible situation, you convey his pain and scorn most admirably. It's a curiously relatable, human reaction to an impossible situation we see here. Hamlet has been commanded by his ghostly father and king to avenge his wrongful murder, it sounds like the motivation for an earlier fantasy novel on the face of it, and a generic protagonist would do it, take the throne and probably bring the sunshine back to the realm for good measure... and yet for all the rightness of Hamlet's cause and justful hate he bears his uncle... murder isn't exactly nothing. If he explains to the royal court after the fact that he committed regicide because the old king's ghost told him to they'd put him away; this quest will destroy his life and quite possibly his soul and as Shakespeare (and you) masterfully conveys through this monologue, that's not an easy thing to bear, and by the expectations Hamlet puts on himself he inevitably comes to despise himself and resent the world around him. How infuriating must a troupe of actors living normal, untroubled lives and aping his torment on the stage be? Once again, nice, nice and thrice nice. Hope the planes didn't pester you excessively with this shoot.

      Thank you, it's nice to hear I improved. I'm always striving to improve myself, and with acting it's the same like with everything else: There more you do it the better you get. And I have to agree that this monologue really shows how great a writer William Shakespeare was (although I doubt anyone would question his greatness). I love the way he turns Hamlet's inner struggle into such a poetic speech. If you just really take in the words, it's actually rather easy to comprehend Hamlet's pain. Well, of course I had to take a good look at the annotations to completely understand what was going on. But I've always admired how Shakespeare can basically paint with words. The planes did their usual thing, so did the mosquitoes, I'm afraid it can't be helped. But one of these days I might get my revenge on them. Kidding of course...or am I?

Really captures the enthusiastic autumnal vibe, I shall have to revisit this video in the most wretchedly hot days of summer and think wistfully of what's to follow. Once again, everything blends well together, costume, scenery, mystical-sounding music and verses. A most nifty poem, by the way; not too complex as to confuse but not too straightforward as to lose the magic. That can be hard to pull off when your poem involves mushrooms. Nice, nice and thrice nice. PS. 0:55 Half expected my knitting to fly out of my hands there. It'd be in keeping with how this strange week has gone. PPS. Nice hat.

Well, it was fun, playing with a wand is one of those things that make me feel like a child again. Also, I love mushrooms, but not as much as my best friend does. I borrowed the hat, the wand and the vest from her, and they are all mushroom-themed. Yeah, my friend adores mushrooms. I'm happy you liked the poem, may this video serve you well during the summertime. I have to admit, right now, I'm kind of longing for summer. But it'll only take one wretchedly scorching summer day for me to change my mind and wish back for whatever this weather is...rainy and kind of cold.

      Hi, thank you for your kind words. At the moment I'm sick (but it's getting better), I ran into some trouble while filming. You see, there is this scene where the main character is lured into a lake by the lake witch, and I was filming the part where she breaks out of her trance and realises what is happening. While doing so I accidentally dropped my dagger into the lake, which was kind of a nightmare. I also ended up knocking over my camera. Long story short, now I have two cameras, because I thought the one that fell in the water was broken, but turns out it wasn't, which is great. I also got my dagger back, I ended up going magnet fishing. But yeah, I suppose it's a bad idea in general to do water related things in March, as it's still pretty cold around where I live. The day I went to retrieve my dagger it was around ten degrees celsius, and I actually had to go inte lake, because the dagger was stuck in the mud. It took me some time to find it. Honestly, I might just do a short video about this story, it's almost funny in retrospect. I have a video coming up, still needs a voice-over, which I couldn't record yet because of my cold. And once I'm done filming the bigger project, I'll be doing the Yorrick and Hecuba monologues from Hamlet you recommend. I hope things are going well for you, happy spring 😊

    Ohhh now this is a fine one; first off, a quality narrative poem indeed, at once fantastical, relatable, human and inhuman, also hinting at a greater story and leaving the listener curious to know more, which seems to be an admirable (and enviable) recurring trait in your poem-tales. Compounding the quality is basically everything else: the music, the lighting, the acting, the costume, the haunted-looking woods, the editing the more-convincing-than-most strangulation, the lingering shot on the leaves at the end lasting just a little too long which ends on a creepy note; it all combines to create a gripping, unnerving and subtlely tragic video. The echo of your voice is another nice touch, that's one effect that's so easy to either overdo or else understate, but here it very much fits with the tone and just generally sounds cool. Nice, nice and thrice nice. (I have missed dropping by in the evenings to comment on one of your videos, I have to say.)

      I have missed reading your comments, too. So glad you liked it, that makes me very happy. In terms of backstory, I usually try to write one for my characters, so that they make sense and have a reason for saying, well, whatever it is that they're saying. Funny enough, I mostly do that after writing the poem. I really love the background music, I'm happy I came across this particular music piece. It's really haunting and beautiful, I find it really adds to the overall atmosphere.
