How to Plant Trees, Property Tour, Nature, Trail Camera - Summer Update 2024
I continue to replant native trees that will produce nuts, berries and tropical fruit (paw paw). I also have great updates on all my previous efforts including American Chestnut trees, a big deal. I added chapters immediately below this brief summary to make your viewing a little more easier:)
Chapters:
00:00 Work on the Property
07:00 Updates: American Chestnuts, Serviceberries I am planting and overall goal(s) of work
11:54 Planting Serviceberries in the wetland (wildflower area) and in the higher elevations
30:05 Fetching water from Bull Creek to water in the trees I just planted
36:42 Preparing for the evening; sounds and sights of nature late afternoon, before dusk
37:55 Nature, sights and sounds
45:43 Tour of the entire property, successful native restoration thus far, Bull Creek and Trail Camera June-July 2024
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Channel History
I decided to create this channel years ago with the hope of sharing my outdoor experiences with only my closest friends and family. That worked for while, until I converted a van. I figured I would do a van conversion tour video for my friends and it accidentally went viral! I was shocked. All of a sudden I had more subscribers.
Realizing the channel could speak to "larger audiences", I started to do more outdoor nature videos to help battle destruction of our lands, watersheds and protect endangered species. I figured I would put a little more effort into things. So I purchased better cameras and upgraded software and learned a bit of video editing. With some technical help from a few friends and some assistance from @LittleLazy, I have become a bit busier here on UA-cam. Although the COVID pandemic really slowed me and hurt the channel, I am busier now and creating more content.
I hope you enjoy what I put together. For an old dog, I have learned a few new tricks.
The ultimate goal is to use the van to travel to America's natural and historic areas and share them with you. My desire would be for you to speak up when it counts and support leaders throughout America who will protect and conserve what remains of our natural world.
Thanks for visiting and please like and Subscribe!
Sincerely,
Mark
PS: A little about the van: From October 2018 to May 2019, a 2018 Ram Promaster 2500 cargo van was converted in to a "cabin on wheels". This remains a DIY project completed by a normal guy working a full time gig and spending a ton of "off " time finishing the project and tinkering.

Planting Wild Chestnut Trees in the Blue Ridge Mountains, NC

About 6 weeks ago I received bare root Wild Type American Chestnut Trees from the American Chestnut Foundation. It would have been a much easier job if I'd received them in North Carolina instead of Florida - but I had no choice, I live in Florida. I was able to pot the seedlings and sprout the leaves in central Florida before taking them to NC and planting them permanently. This video is an up...

Mark orders American Chestnut Trees to plant in Western North Carolina. Problem is, he is in Florida! In this video, he demonstrates how to temporarily, experimentally, plant a tree in the hopes he can replant it in 20 days in a place better suited for the American Chestnut Tree. Mark is not an expert, so this is fun to watch. Idiots doing strange things is always fun to watch. I decided to cre...

"Patience Pays in the Fakahatchee Strand" II Everglades Mink!
1/4 drive socket set 👍
What’s amazing is the number of folks who have watched that video. I’m glad it’s helped. And your added info will no doubt help others. Can’t believe I failed to mention that!
It's a very nice radio, thank you. I have had a leak where my roof antennae was for years and the dealer tried fixing it five times and never did. It has filled my overhead light and bluetooth microphone and dripped down onto my stock radio and ruined it. I would probably need J. Paul Getty to sue Chrysler so that's out of the question. But my roof liner has always been stained. Bummmer.
Useless video
Too bad you gotta deal with the heat, buddy! Take care and stay cool.
Thanks man. How’s CA heat? I was there a few years ago and it was pretty bad, and it felt like the landscape would burst into flames (Yosemite). Hope you’re good man.
I am from Florida and I love the heat...but I have to agree it has been exceptionally hot lately!
I loved the heat and could operate full speed a few years ago. The last two years has been different for sure. It literally stops me in my tracks. Most of my work is mornings and later afternoon unless it’s raining. I take advantage of that!!
We have ourselves a hoarder. Thanks for the video.
lol, you bet. Thanks for the note!!
The flower is from a tulip poplar tree (Liriodendron tulipifera). They are in the magnolia family. Beautiful trees. You have a very pretty parcel of land.
Thank you!!!! I really appreciate your help on that one!
Hi Mark, Why are you planting so many maple trees?
Hey there! A few reasons to plant the 5: 1. creating a bit of canopy/cover in once was a tree covered area near the creek, 2. Creating a barrier between the property and a hiking trail, 3. Using red maples to increase fall colors in the area nearest the creek. I planted 5 in total. Hardest to put in were the two closest to the old farm road which was compact and had a rock aggregate content. While I was there I planted some paw paw trees (4). Using those to recreate some canopy and create a source of native tropical fruit for my own consumption and wildlife. Did that answer your question? Lmk and thanks for the question! Mark
NPR?
Must’ve been.
Saw your van at the sunrail station this morning when picking up my car. Awesome setup.
Hey thanks!! It’s functional and comfortable for sure. Appreciate the kind words.
Man those squirrels are a mofo lol
Lucky for them I’m kind hearted. Otherwise it would be bbq time!
I'll never see such a beautiful place. Thanks for sharing.
Love that Wesley Wilson Trail!! Can’t wait to hike it someday.
Definitely. It’s a beautiful place. I was also thinking about calling it caffeine Hill in his honor.
Crotons?? Potocarpus?? Exotics?? That's not what Mark Pafford taught me to plant!! 😂😂 Seriously, the yard looks great Mark! Philip
lol thanks! Lots of it was “repurposed” after hurricanes and from yard debris.
Geez!! So sorry! I hope and pray y’all are recovering and doing well! ❤
Love it brother!! 👍
Way cool
Wonderful place. Extraordinary for a Miami guy, used to the Everglades.
Just passed ur van in Orlando fl. Decided to check it out. Very wholesome content. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Thank you!! I was returning to Orlando from Arcadia after meeting my parents to remove the final contents from their home of 50 years that was destroyed by Hurricane Ian. Needless to say, I was worn out, physically and mentally! Appreciate reading this and the follow after such a long day! Enjoy the rest of your weekend and thank you!
Hi, Question. Uni-strut can have nuts slid into it then bolts screwed into those nuts. Is that bolt and sliding nut combo how you attached the solar panel brackets?
That’s exactly how I did it! Worked really well. It’s never loosened. Not being a structural engineer, I got lucky!!
@@WildJourneys Nice ! I am a little concerned that the nuts may fail since they only grab the edges of the uni-strut. But I’ll keep checking them
Love this!
Thanks! Lol. Cheap too, if you like coffee.
How could you NOT show the cemetery of the 13,000 patriots who chose death before dishonor????
Didn’t have enough time to cover it properly. It would take three days to really take in everything that site offers. Also, more about Grant and his decision making would have been important to share. Hopefully more people find the site worth visiting.
@@WildJourneys Prisoners weren't exchanged because the South didn't want to treat Union African American troops as POWs that could be repatriated...they wanted to send them back to slave owners. This wasn't just a Grant decision: it came from the very TOP. Your video is the weakest I've ever seen from Andersonville, and most certainly seems to avoid the 13,000 graves that are shoulder-to-shoulder...the only military cemetery in the US that has that feature. I'd take your video down sir. Its weak/poor/and misleading...and considering the other videos on-line about Andersonville, its plain useless.
I will leave it up and allow people the opportunity to understand more about Andersonville. I appreciate what you have shared and have no problem with keeping your thoughts in public view. I think they add to the history of Andersonville. There is no purposeful slight to the 13k graves and I am happy you pointed that out as well. As I previously noted, I am not a historian or film maker. I share my experiences here and attempt to bring interest to these places, people and subjects. I visited the site due to its significance and importance to our shared history. Your critique makes the video better imo. I appreciate your thoughts and I thank you for watching the weak, poor and misleading video. I suspect your comments will benefit folks who want to visit the site themselves.@@mikeamaraln1mx
Can you still see your backup camera view when you put it in reverse?
Yes. I’ve never had a problem with it.
Is there a part 2? I’d love to see adaptations.
I definitely could do that! The band has made it their own and a bassist was added so now there are three. Thanks for the message!
President Jimmy Carter and his family are wonderful people.
Very much so. We really enjoyed our visit and especially seeing them both Sunday morning. Really an honor. The city was quaint and the people were wonderful hosts. We even met the mayor and his wife. It’s like a living museum of sorts. Highly recommended for sure.
Cool I didn’t know monk were in Florida I see a lot of otters in the swamp though!
Yes! And the Everglades Mink is arguably more rare than the Florida Panther. Took me 50 years to see one. Once you see one you’ll easily differentiate them from gray squirrels. Kinda similar initially.
Splashes in pond are catfish !
Wow I figured gar!! Thanks :)
whats the mask for?
As I recall it was during Covid and I had just come out of the building behind me (bathrooms etc). I forgot I had it on and removed it to record.
Love it there, bears Turkey, deer, bobcat. But no bunnies, possum, and only one squirrel have we observed. Guess pythons have been around. Hawks , vultures, storks, kingfishers, and more flocks of Turkey. More birds than identifiable. Fishing is superb.
Thanks for the reply and your own observations!! Yes it unique. The pythons are getting closer and they have made it into the big cypress. Sadly I think it’s only a matter of time. Have you seen Everglades Mink?
You’ve given a voice to the voiceless.
Thank you for your compassion and allowing people to tell their story.
It was something I’d wanted to do for a long time. Thanks for your kind words. Society needs to be better at respecting all people - this community in particular needs understanding and a better outlook. In many ways, Paige and Fred are healthier than many people I know.
We were there today and passed your van on Janes Scenic Drive. Keep up the content! This was our first visit, but we want to come back as it gets cooler.
It’s a very special place. Definitely when it’s cooler. Summer is outstanding minus the high heat, high humidity, potholes and bugs. That said, we’ve seen the most bear ever (7 in 10 hours) during the Summer. I’ve seen Everglades Mink all throughout the year including today. No panther as of yet :/ Faka is like fishing, even if you never get a bite it’s exciting - and what’s left of some of the most unique natural areas in the world! Thanks for saying hello. 5 hours and made it back to Orlando! That’s the absolute worst thing about getting Faka. Now some rest so I can start work Monday…. Thanks again!
How many bathrooms?
lol. None.
What a great location, it seems brimming with life! Great video.
Heading back in 2 weeks to try again. Panthers are there, just need to be patient. Will video whatever we see! Thanks!!
THE HOUSE THAT IS SHOWN IS THE SECRET SERVICE HEADQUARTERS.PRESIDENT CARTER'S HOUSE IS DOWN THE STREET BEHIND THAT HOUSE.
Oh wow! Honestly didn’t know that. Thank you!!
We really enjoyed our visit immensely. Often suggest to people as a place to visit.
How did you attach the seat belts to your bench? And thanks for showing the area for shore power on the promaster. I’m doing that part tomorrow 👍
Seatbelts are attached behind/under the bench seat. They are lap-belts. Although I have had people use them, passengers aren’t facing front ways, but rather sideways. Clearly the national highway safety administration would have approved them in 1950! That said: I bolted them to the floor and used heavy plates to reinforce the area I bolted to. They are used more often to secure gear etc when I’m driving. Does that help?
That helps a lot! Thank you.
There is absolutely nothing online about gargling coffee, so I will not be taking your advice on this one. l🤣😂Nice to see you having fun buddy!
Lol, I’m was surprised Brendan didn’t laugh. Dumb, yet effective. Thank man! Lol
Brendan’s your son right?
As far as I know. He’s too good looking, I’m suspicious.

Thank you!! Sorry I checked this sooo late!
Doesn’t want his image on the camera? I thought for sure you were with a friend we have in common.😂
Nope lol. And our friend doesn’t care at all about being on camera. In fact, he does crap that is hilarious. Not on purpose though. Which makes it even better. He is an oddity. Lol.
@@WildJourneys I am all too familiar with his impromptu humor. Thanks for the Texas tour, I especially enjoyed the music.!

Yes. It works fine. From what a couple folks have said, it doesn’t work well but I’ve never had a problem.
Good to see you again
