Ten tips for billionaires seeking extreme longevity-from a permaculture urbanist nearing his seventh decade of life. This super-strange topic actually involved more than the usual amount of research and calculations (below). Spoiler: it’s not just for billionaires. Long live everyone!

Lives saved riding Shinkansen:
0.516 crash deaths / 10^8 car-miles (US) [1]
⨉1.609 km/mi ⨉ 10/10
= 8.31 deaths / 10^9 km.
Shinkansen provides 100,000,000,000 passenger-km per year [2] with no deaths[3] saving 8.31 ⨉ 10^11 ÷ 10^9 = 831 lives/year vs driving.

1 in X people die in a car crash in the US, where
X=km per crash death÷km driven per lifetime. (1)
X=10^11÷831 [from above]
÷(13,476 miles driven per car per year [4]
⨉1.609 km/mile ⨉ 1.5 people/car [5]
⨉79 year life expectancy [6])
=47. One in 47 people die in car crashes.
For rail [1], this number is 737.
For a 200 year life expectancy, it’s 19.

Air pollution from car exhausts:
43,343 US car crash deaths, 2005.[7] (similar to now)
58,000 US deaths from car exhausts, 2005 [8].
58,000÷43,343= 1.34.
Inactivity toll from car use:
3 million global deaths from inactivity, 2010.[9]
1,350,000 global car crash deaths.[10]
3,000,000÷1,250,000 = 2.22.
Crashes+exhausts+inactivity=1+1.34+2.22=4.56
Divide X by 4.56 in Equation (1): cars kill 1 in
10 people (79-year lifespan), or 1 in
4 people (200-year lifespan).

Are swales and food forests even practical?
Переглядів 2,9 тис.День тому
Questions always seem to arise whenever urban designs include water retention landscaping and layered “forest” gardens. Are they too costly to establish and maintain? Do they work as expected? Do they have hidden costs and problems later on? Why do we even need them in the first place? This episode will address these questions, clear up several common misconceptions, and provide some practical ...
Is this Allowed in Permaculture Urbanism?
Переглядів 95314 днів тому
Can Village Homes really be a permaculture urbanist neighborhood when it has so many culs de sac? Let’s revisit why we need permaculture urbanism and Edenicity, and why people even choose culs de sac. Then we can sort out what should and shouldn’t be a part of each kind of development. Because developers are actually starting to ask! 😁 Reference Design: www.edenicity.com/design.html Video menti...
Why permaculture urbanism (water design)
Переглядів 1,1 тис.21 день тому
Permaculture and urbanism really need to get together-especially for water management in cities. Today’s episode explores permaculture water design for farms, its limitations in suburban gardens, and an example of farm-scale permaculture water concepts applied to an urban neighborhood. Of course I’ll discuss why these are urgent matters for the planet. As a bonus, you’ll also get a short list o...

City Design: The Billionaire Problem
Переглядів 2,4 тис.Місяць тому
Cities are uniquely positioned to restore the lost half of life on earth and lift billions of people out of poverty. But this requires innovation at scale against incredible resistance-the core skill set of some billionaires. So… should cities and nations coddle them? In this episode, we’ll discuss the promise of permaculture urbanism, a possible niche for billionaires, the problem billionaires...
What’s the Backup Plan for Earth?
Переглядів 880Місяць тому
Life may be rare in the universe, so Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk have urged us to settle other planets-just in case. But before we build self-sustaining cities in space, shouldn’t we first learn how to build them on Earth? Today’s episode is about security on a planetary scale: how we’ve lost the real skills of ecological survival, how we may regain them in cities, and how doing so gives us a...
How Neighborhoods Can Cure Loneliness
Переглядів 8172 місяці тому
Loneliness can be deadly. Studies have shown that people with the fewest social connections are far more vulnerable to all causes of mortality, including weather disasters. As a permaculture urbanist, I frequently notice how the built environment shapes people’s ability to form social connections, and how that environment varies wildly from neighborhood to neighborhood. What can your neighborho...
How Cities Can Cure Loneliness

When city-dwellers report feeling lonely, it could be an urban design problem. What’s missing? As a permaculture urbanist, I notice how often our society forgets a key insight from ecology: prosperity is based on sharing. When cities structure themselves to make sharing easier, people thrive in every way-including socially. But what should cities build to foster sharing? In today’s episode, I g...

The Case AGAINST Road Widening
Переглядів 1,1 тис.2 місяці тому
What can you actually do to make your city more sustainable? This channel makes the case that sustainability is much more about large scale design (roads, buildings, food and energy systems) than daily personal choices. That can feel disempowering. But when I saw in the Columbus Dispatch that the Planning Commission wanted feedback about some expected road widening, I pushed back with the email...
The Fall of Rome-A Permaculture Urbanist Perspective
Переглядів 9133 місяці тому
What does the fall of Rome have to do with permaculture urbanism? Turning to my trusty copy of Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations, a 2012 book by David R. Montgomery, I found some striking clues to the challenges we’re facing now. Rome began with sophisticated, layered food systems. Early Roman farmers interplanted crops like olives, grapes, cereals, and fodder in ways that protected the soil a...
Carfree Cities Edenized
Переглядів 9253 місяці тому
When I was planning the original Edenicity podcast, I came across James Crawford’s lavishly illustrated 2002 book Carfree Cities. After building the case that cars are the main thing that makes cities miserable, Crawford set out to design cities from the ground up that would not require cars. Crawford imagined a series of circular, high-density districts of 12,000 people. 81 of these vibrant vi...
Non Utopian City Design
Переглядів 1,3 тис.3 місяці тому
Edenicity began as a utopian exercise to design a city where the basic systems (housing, energy, food and transportation) worked together with ecological integrity in a compact footprint. But unlike its more flamboyant utopian peers, Edenicity strives to use as many proven, ready-made solutions as possible: things like apartments and public transit. Together, these go a long way toward providin...
How Sustainable is Your City? How the Edenicity Score Works
Переглядів 7263 місяці тому
How green is your city? Sure, you could look up its WalkScore or how many buildings are LEED rated-two important and indispensable metrics that we’ll explore in this episode. But what about your city as a whole? How good is it for the planet when measured against clear end goals? There are two ways to measure this: objectively and subjectively. The objective approach would involve detailed city...
