He has been chasing Mick Ronson's tone for many years and has manufactured his own distortion pedals and effects where he's gotten 99% close to it. Not just for Ziggy, he's got the Aladdin Sane sound too, as well as MWSTW and Hunky Dory. I highly recommend you check him out.

I listen to a lot and think about the lyrics. I think that each of the characters in the song is an exaggeration of some kind of description or comment about Bob made by the letter writer. The historical allusions are to put context onto the nature of the words the letter writer aims at Bob. Am I crazy?

This is a fusion of punk & hard rock sprinkled heavily with guitar distortion over a basic riff. A formula grunge would draw upon heavily in future years. What really makes it work is Mark Arms cutting clear vocals. Epic
