The Chores & Chow blog was born from the desire to educate homeowners on how to be more handy around the house. The goal is to provide its readers the knowledge base to not only properly maintain their home but to acquire the skill sets to navigate home repairs and projects. Being handy around the house has many benefits, including saving money, which can be used to fund your retirement or at least your Starbucks addiction.
Of course, after a hard days work, it’s nice to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Anyone can agree there’s nothing quite like a great meal, yet it’s astounding how many are not comfortable in the kitchen. Even if you have a solid skill set, it’s the subtle nuances that can make a good meal a great meal. You don’t need to be trained at the Le Cordon Bleu to make great food. You just need to love food.

How to Install Lawn Pop-up Drain
Переглядів 182 тис.4 роки тому
Downspouts that drain into flowerbeds or other areas around the yard can cause damage and other unsightly issues. One way to avoid that is to install a Pop-up Drain Emitter. It's an easy weekend job that will divert water away from your home and keep your flowerbeds free of water erosion. #popupdrain #DIY
How to Prevent Crabgrass
Переглядів 2035 років тому
Seasonal Crabgrass Prevention Crabgrass is an invasive, nasty weed that can wreak havoc on your lawn. Early crabgrass prevention is key before its reign of terror begins. In late summer, crabgrass is in full bloom and releases thousands of seedlings. These seedlings lie dormant throughout the winter and begin to germinate in the spring. Once the seedlings begin this process, pre-emergents won’t...
Te quedó muy bien! felicitaciones!
How high up did you mount the hammock hooks?
I was wondering how you were supposed to get the emitter to be at ground level when you had to dig a sloped trench. I was all like "does not compute"... Thanks for pointing out how you did it.
adaptor should be 3"X2"
Get rid of that stupid music
What if your lawn slopes up away from your house? Would this still work?
Beautiful 👍
I love that , I will definitely give it a try. 💪🏼🙌🏼
I used those cheap corrugated pipe that you pull out and 2 years later I have to remove that garebage pipe . It collapsed from the weight of my cub cadet mowere and broke and now I have dug it up and it has cracks and splits all over it . I bought the nds corrugated heavy pipe . My yard is sloped away from the house and I have zoisa grass and every outlet I have used at the end of the run has failed . Broken or cracked end drain My house is 100 ft long with 6 downspouts and used the heavy duty corruragated pipe on all the others since the 3 back downspouts have to run over 100 ft in some cases and every popup has cracked or broken . The 2 of the front ones now have above ground pipes until I replace the underground failed garbage you show here that cracks , splits and breaks . Since the front yard is sloped all the way down to the road I bought 1 pipe 100 ft long . 1 cut off will be 40 ft long because it has to go around the edge of my 5 thousand gallon koi pond . Others will each be 30 ft long , Slope runs down to the road over 400 ft so won't need as much on those 2
Great idea. Did you put anything in the bags to stop odor?
Not in this case as the pillows were dry and stored in a dry place, but depending on the environment you plan to store them, it would be a good idea!
What is the gravel for again?
As it rains and the water seeps into the ground, the gravel helps to filter and prevent water from pooling around the base of the post, which slows the deterioration of the wood.
I bought 4x4 posts now I’m nervous to use them. No tree.
4x4 post won't hold up with the weight and tension over time. Best to use 6x6!
Thank you! I've had this beautiful hammock for several years and have been trying to figure out how to hang it in my garden. Love the idea of hanging a pot of flowers on it too and will be planting salvia in the pots so the hummingbirds will be flying around me will I enjoy my cat nap in the sun! Very well explained, great videos - Thank you!
Thank you for this video. It’s very informative. This is a project I might do too someday
Thank you wasn't sure how deep to go
Great video! I now have to confidence to complete this project instead of calling someone. Thank you!
Very well done video with great detail. I used it to install 2 posts for a hammock!
speech level: normal Music level: earsplosion also im gonna make a post strong enough to carry 300kg so i guess i need two poles together and a deeper hole.
BTW. The saying “ the rule of thumb “ is an old English saying, the rule of thumb was the thickness of the stick you were allowed to hit your wife with, how times have changed huh ? 😎 But great vid anyhow 👍
I saw the Chores part of the video, so what was the Chow?? I hope some good bbq, you deserve it., so how long did it take to do this whole job(not counting getting the parts from the hardware store?
You should always mix your concrete before putting in the hole.
This particular brand does not need mixed first
Nice. I will copy it . Thanks
Love the idea!!!!!
Thank you
dude, equalize your intro music please
Did this exactly, now I have very soft ground around the emitter, always wet, what could that be from?
Assume the grade is at a slight decline so the water runs downhill from the emitter? If so, there shouldn't be any pooling water around the emitter/ground. Now, if you've had a lot of rain recently, yes that area could be saturated. However, that would eventually dry out once the rain stops.
Water?
Would you not recommend having the posts slightly angled to counteract bowing or leaning towards the center of weight overtime?
That's a good question Carlos! In this case that's a big reason we went with 6x6 posts. This size post has plenty of beef to hold quite a bit weight and going on a couple years now, we haven't seen any flex whatsoever. Keep in mind we also use these posts as towel holders and also hang plants on the sides. We also don't have the hammock up all of the time, so we don't have constant tension on the post. I'd imagine, as with any wood structure that's outside, flexing could occur over time, along with typical structural degradation. That said, we're hoping for well over a decade of solid performance!
great idea

Excellent video, helped me out a lot! Followed the instructions exactly and now have a perfect hammock spot in my backyard. The only modification I made was to use an eye bolt and drill it completely through the 6x6 with a nut and washer on the other end. This thing is rock solid, I feel totally comfortable with 2 people in the hammock.
Brilliant!!
You're supposed to cover the pipe in landscape fabric and drainage gravel, otherwise the dirt turns to mud which will clog the pipe.
its not a perforated7 pipe. it is closed. No need to wrap a sealed pipe.
I'd put sod over the stone, not dirt if I was forced to use an end drain like that. Sod has dirt held together by the roots. Dirt will wash into the stone. Popups should be used as the absolute last resource. Open discharge is best.
Thank you! Great tutorial!!
Hows your system working after one year? If you give us update and that would be helpful.
System is working great! There were some comments about the type piping used as being problematic and/or in could collapse. That's not the case. First off, the downspouts are fitted with guards to prevent debris from clogging up the drain. Second, you'll note that I buried the piping at least a foot below ground to prevent movement/compression from the riding mower going over the area. It's also not highly trafficked. Thanks for the comment!
@@choreschow You can't always go a foot deep. I have sections of my pipes where the tops are less than 2".
Everything looks good but no way would I use just the kit to hang through your post run a big bolt through that baby 👍
can you please tell me what size is the elbow.
the elbow comes with the pop up emitter. Its like $16 at home depot.I just bought one
You covered every question I had. You are an excellent teacher. Camera and video editing was great as well. I look forward you seeing your other videos. Thank You.
One year later my post is still rock solid and the stain is still looking good. Thanks again.
Great video! I just had an irrigation company do this for me, but noticed a couple of the pop up emitters are at least 2 inches below grade. Will this cause any problems?
The actual emitter should be just at the surface of the soil. The main concern for an emitter 2 inches below grade would be debris collecting on top of the pop-up, therefore preventing flow. Over time the sides around the emitter could collapse in also preventing proper flow.
@@choreschow thanks for the reply. I had them come out and raise it to grade.
So it should all be level? I have a problem with the driveway sloping down toward the garage but to the left emptying into the grass. I thought of putting in a catch basin and having an emitter down a ways and emptying onto the lawn in the backyard.
Concrete eats treated wood. The post will weaken and eventually break. You need to wrap the post with something like ice and water shield or heavy plastic (60mil) Other than that nice job
You need to fix the volume. Cant hear you so i turned it up and then the music deafened me.
Plus the background music is very distracting.
i don't have any tree to attach to--can i do TWO posts, one for each side??? thx!
Yes
DO NOT buy that corrugated pipe that this dunce installed. It is garbage and will be crushed and full of roots in about 5 years. You're welcome.
Thank you so much! I didn't know just putting the wood in the ground would be sturdy enough for a hammock. I will buy my wood and get to work.
Iam doing a French system along the side of my detached garage. I live I'm the city and my parents live in garage so water is been getting in there. I was gonna have the corrugated pipe run all the way to street from garage for water to exit but garage kinnda far from where garage is. So my question is if I use one of those emmiter pop up elbows somewhere down the pipe for water to exit, will I need to slope the corrugated pipe down to emmiter elbow so water can escape there if pipe gets filled up with water or emmiter pop up will work regardless of pipe slope?
Nice simple setup, but I have a couple concerns: 1) your post is brand new and still really wet. The stain mot likely won't last long because of it. You should have waited before doing that. Also, the stamped lettering on the post is going to show through the stain and should have been sanded off first.
Lmfao😂 why don’t you make your own video
How long do you have to wait for it to dry out and how do you know it’s dry?
@@TheScoobysnack08 the real answer is it depends. Typically it's about a year, but you'll know it's ready when you can drip water on it and the water soaks in rather than beads up. If water beads up, it means the boards are too wet and won't properly accept the stain.
Where we can buy the solar light? The video doesn't have the links. Thanks
Hi Diego, you can find these at most home project stores. Also, many options on Amazon. www.amazon.com/s?k=deck+post+top+light&ref=nb_sb_noss_2
beautiful! and the host too ;-p - I managed to dig it 30 inches deep, anything deeper it was hard to grab the dirt using my tool. Also please try to add the Amazon links to buy all the materials.
Home depot
Clean!
Do you think I could do this process but with pvc pipe
I did and it works fine!
PVC is preferred - the corrugations will only end up holding trapped water once the rain is over.
@@whiteknightcat What I am gonna do it drill holes only at the bottom of the pipe toward the end, that way water can seep through. You can get the pipe with holes but that wouldnt be good to use from a downspout.. I am getting solid pipe and drilling holes at the bottom the last 3 ftt of a 10 ft run. It has natural slope too
@@randyman8984 Attract roots. Open, horizontal discharge is best.
