Hey there, I’m Carolyn! On this channel, we’re exposing how brands and influencers use psychological manipulation and other scammy marketing tactics to shape our behavior and sell products, often without us even realizing it. We’ll take a closer look at influencers who seem to build their entire brand around selling to us, unpack the marketing strategies behind so-called "viral products," and dive into how the brands behind the scenes pull the strings for profit.
My goal is to help you recognize manipulative marketing tactics so you can focus on what makes social media fun and meaningful. We’re just getting started, so I hope you stick around! :)

EXPOSING “AI INFLUENCERS” AND THE SKETCHY BRANDS BEHIND THEM (Part 2) | Over The Influence Ep 3
TikTok’s fake "AI influencers" and their deceptive viral ads are absolutely out of control. So today, we’re breaking it all down! From AI-generated accounts pushing sketchy Afina shower filters to undisclosed product placements disguised as viral content, we’re exposing how brands are manipulating trust, engagement, and authenticity to sell us (in my opinion) absolute junk.
Let’s break down the engagement farming, shady influencer tactics, and MLM-style schemes behind it all...because this is just the beginning.
Have you spotted deceptive ads, influencers lying to sell us something, or hidden sponsorships? Send them my way, I want to hear it all!

We think we're in control of our brains, but we have no idea how heavily influened we are.
Ugh, even skipping over the AI bullshit, tiktok is almost unbearable at this point!! I miss being able to see actual stories from real people, the gossip, learning about stuff, current events etc. Nearly every video is a fucking ad now 😭😭 I got 3 in a row this morning. I can't trust anyone anymore.
lmao i bought that filter and it actually works!!!! my hair is so clean and i have so much less skin damage. the ads are terrible but using a water filter does work 😅 so messed up tho
The infertile couple reminds me of an actual couple in Sweden. They are in their 70's and got biological twins through a surrogate. They are featured in a great Swedish documentary "Vi ska bli föräldrar" on SVT. They do not have custody because they could not take after them (shocker) and the home was a mess.
Anyone notice that a woman left her husband to spend her life with children from all over the world? Gives off a creepy Angelina vibe. Just focusing on the first story: Im not sure but I think you have to go through a pretty strict process to host an exchange student. If someone is going through a divorce, don't you think that would be something the organization would consider? That's very odd in itself, but don't forget the fact that the AI created a story where someone left their spouse to spend time intimately with children. These programs are taking what is trending and adding it into the stories and avatars they create. So using this example...."we are the world" is a generational hit. That woman appears to be the age that would have grown up during that time. That's an unconscious note by the company to prey on that age of women they are targeting. Seems insignificant but trust me, it's intentional. All "past" events will be used against you in a court of commercials. Also, because he didn't want children around? That's a hit on the 'empty nest' idea that happens during this age. I could go on, but I'm sure you can see it now. Then the creepy factor of teen girls?...that's all over the social place (with *traffic* and *p word* dominating news) so to use that, WOW, creepy. What kind of customer are they aiming at there???? If that's too far out there for you, then consider the immigration that is taking place. Just another way to play a note for a larger picture. Subliminal messaging the advertisers use. Flashes of past ideas. And then they are designed for cell phones. It's much harder to spot a small imperfection in AI when it is so small to look at. Note: If a company is paying for AI influencers, then they also pay for followers, likes and views. Most the comments are not real either. I really enjoyed this! In fact, I loved it. You did a great job. I study human behavior and business as a hobby and you nailed it. Thank you for sharing and please don't stop! I am a subscriber now. Came across you doing research. I am also teaching my wee one about this stuff. She can spot and AI commercial in a second haha She's sharp. But it's getting much harder these days. Gotta stay on our toes! Much love
Good on you for using your expertise and experience to educate others and expose the unethical use of AI and these unhinged, manipulative marketing tactics!👏✌️❤️
i got an ad for ai infulcing for this video
the infertility one is highly sus even number wise. trying to et pregnant for 32 yrs, but are currently 48 and husband is 55.. the math is not mathing legally
The idea that milk isnt good for you is funded by companies and organizations that benefit from you neededing a milk replacement and now there are also negative studied done in milk replacement. Funny how it swings both ways and if you only do your research on netflix, you'd be missing an abundance of information. Like how animal protein is more easily absorbed and utilized by the body than plant protein. You have to eat a lot more plants to get the same amount youd get from less milk/yogurt/meat. 😅 FURTHERMORE... almond trees and avocado trees are doing a lot of harm, and are not healthy innocent bystanders. Avocado farming is oppressing whole communities of people.
that’s so weird, i JUST saw one of these exact same ads with the same shower head and rolled my eyes when i realized what i was engaging with
I immediately thought MLM style advertising moments before Carolyn brought it up. It is not a stretch at all.
7:00 I saw an account doing the same thing but they were pushing Jesus bracelets I think. It started out with a video of a young girl who looks like she's getting abused by her Dad for being a Christian and he's kicking her out because she is. And then she runs to a drawer or under her pillow and grabs a "faith based bracelet" of some kind. The whole account had the same story except it actually used completely different AI models and just pushed hundreds of sloppy videos out. People were eating it up because they really thought this girl was being persecuted by her Dad. I saw that it was a scam but I didn't know it was AI and I'm glad you're talking about it in depth.
I'm so not influenced to buy anything! I love it!
You are trying too hard to mimic Hannah Alonzo.
Commercials have been around for forever. Have we really come to a point in American society where we need to make whole videos explaining what a commercial is? People selling products have always told fake stories with fake people. AI or not …. Can you guys seriously not detect when something is a commercial?
Or those old grandparents shouting "Fake Slots" and ripping papers!
I think AI influencers might be better. It seems like "influencers" are influenced by their viewers and potential brand deals and monitization. It destroys freedom of speech. On UA-cam there's a lot people can't say or do perhaps that will change and there will be a place for human expression and art allowing you more freedom of speech.
Have you ever considered how this technology has been used before it was available to the general public? Governments could use this in so many ways and if they are the authority and say it's real it's real then.
You’re videos are so spot on. You gotta do one about tiktokers using the same script “5 PEOPLE COMPLIMENTED ME ON MY BLUSH” nonsense!
I definitely don’t fall for supplements anymore. Everything claims to be a cure . No supplement is regulated. Who knows what’s in them. It’s all a cash grab from greedy unethical people.! Thank you for covering this. Awesome video! I thought you were a well established channel! Great job girl!!! ❤❤❤
I'm just watching your old videos as well, I think your content is great so far. However, I must disagree with the 'genuine virality' of the Stanley Cup situation, unless there was some kind of hard evidence I don't know about, I'm pretty convinced that was astroturfing/guerilla marketing as well. People have tested this before with Stanley cups in burning cars, and they uh, they don't survive, lmao. They're not that good they're just a normal damn thermos. I really think Stanley hired a new marking person who was young, savvy, and very creative, and it obviously did amazing for them. And I hate them now because of it. Previously I had a completely neutral opinion of Stanley cups, they're already 'THE' thermos people picture when they have one in their car as far as I can tell, but I guess that was starting to fade in the modern landscape with the younger generation.
I'm a broken record about this, but if kids are in you house/visit your house please DO NOT do your laundry room like the first video. You can say "well just watch/teach them" all you want, but if a kid thinks something looks yummy they will find a way to eat it and those pretty jars look like candy.
The algorithm sent you to me apparently. Good video, surprised you're such a small channel still. One thing I wanna mention regarding marketing to people who are, basically, lower middle class, (people living paycheck-to-paycheck in the US) is because of an unfortunately true stereotype that people with less money are more prone to impulse purchasing random small bullshit like that than you would think. I say this as someone who's been in poverty my whole life. A wealthy person may impulse buy, but 1: It's usually something from a recognizable luxury brand if they're like, 'rich', and if they're in the ACTUAL top of the financial food chain, they don't really fall for this kind of thing and can get anything they want at any time. And there are way, way, WAY less wealthy people in the country than there are lower-middle-class. And, the reason WHY we're prone to impulse buy is because shopping gives a hit of dopamine for most, however small, and the idea that we might improve even one small thing about our otherwise mediocre lives is very enticing. So something like a fairly inexpensive shower-head filter is perfect to market to this demographic because they are likely to want the dopamine of buying something AND they can justify it in the moment by saying 'this would improve my life, and my life needs improvement'. Anyway it's gross and I hate it.
They’re hoping people won’t check the account it came from. Just hoping for a click and buy using heavy emotional rhetoric. Disgusting.
A million views and only 2000 comments makes me believe that most of the views was bots
I make a point out of not buying anything advertised on social media. I think over the last 10 years the only ad product ive bought was a bag of potato chips a few years ago.
These types of profiles are just as bad on IG. That's where I found them especially in the health & wellness space like I work in.
bots and their influence goes back to late 90s yahoo/aim/msn chat, if not further back.
I just keep hearing colostomy bag every time and that is not sparking joy.
What got me is the title, “weekly cerave restock” maybe they eat it at this household?!
I don’t find the restocking ads enjoyable at all. As a wife and mother I don’t have the time to keep restocking especially in GLASS jars. You work fast and efficiently as much as you can to have your chores done, even when family members are helping, so this is a hazard and a waste of time to move things from one container to another. Just saying.
5:07 kicks off with two 'woman' 😅 it's women, it's plural. not sure why so many youtuber are making this mistake now. 😢
I love your wallpaper and lamp
As someone from a country where TikTok sop is not a thing, these videos are so insightful as I do study marketing. I love the content you create
Im so glad you exposed the AI Tiktok. So many vant tell the difference between AI & real. Good luck on your UA-cam adventure! Followed!
I understand that you'd fall for this kind of video while scrolling, but how habe these accounts so many followers? Wouldn't you notice very quickly that its just the same kind of video over and over again 😂
I hate "thunk thunk thunk" why do they cut out the 'pick up item' step and include every single 'put down item' step? I can't even watch the whole video in this one. So annoying. I put it on mute, read comments, skip ahead. I'm clearly not their ideal audience ❤
Thank you for shining light on this topic
I know about those cheap houses in Tokyo, nobody talks about the additional cost of having to also hire a demolition crew and then build another one that is up to the current earthquake safety code. Like those old things are either total death traps or completely abandoned
I remember ppl debating if Lil Mikaela was an actual human or not
First of all, I've really enjoyed your channel! At some point, could you explore why YT sponsorships seem to be the same run of the mill scammy or borderline unethical companies (e.g., Betterhelp, scentbird, meal delivery services, mobile games, online casinos) regardless of subscriber count. Most of these are subscription services - is there a reason why that business model is seemingly (at least in my experience) more prevalent on this platform? How do companies strategize sponsoring long form vs short form content?
Started watching and immediately subscribed. The ad culture on TikTok is crazy and I would love to learn more about this.
@@kenzielater1378 Thank you so much for your comment! It really is so insanely crazy, More to come soon!
I've seen locals at coffee shops, the mall, etc. swiping through TikTok, they've ran in to posts with something like: "Comment "I'm broke", for your chance to win $10,000!!!" Of course, the locals fall for it most of the time.
I had a neighbor who would donate $100-250 a month to a fake Mukbang influencer account, I tried to warn him. Yet he was so heavily in love with the a.i. generated woman he'd throw his money at."She" never uploaded videos, "She" only uploaded pictures of "Herself" eating piles of food. Money well wasted I suppose?
Influencers aren’t real. Now hear me out, it’s not in the sense of that they don’t exist, but that they’re reality tv real. As in fake personas that people put on when they know they’re being watched by strangers that don’t show the real person, even though they may or may not show what the person really thinks and feels at times. Lots of people feel this way about anyone that is a public person, and that’s why they might not be bothered by AI influencers, since it doesn’t matter if it’s Tony the Tiger or [insert traditional celebrity of choice] or someone on social media trying to sell them cereal, it’s still the company trying to convince you to buy the cereal Unfortunately not everyone thinks like that, so it’s still important to try to get the message out there. I’ve known people that say they feel like they know even a celebrity from their music that really speaks to them, so how likely you are to feel close to complete strangers varies, but I don’t even know my neighbours. Even the ones that I’ve talked to are still acquaintances at best, and if they tried to sell me something I’d probably not be all that interested tbh I might not be the target audience per se, but the word needs to reach those that do need to hear it so here’s engagement for the algorithm haha
I just realized I saw one of these on YT. It was about moving to China and said the solved homelessness. As I watched it I knew that wasnt true, but wrote that off as an over exaggeration. I dont think I reliazed the whole thing was an ad🤦🏿♀️
15:40 The car fire was not in a tow yard, it was outside of her house. That was a specific part of the story, as they had to smother the car and it couldnt be moved or entered. Please check facts before spreading misinformation
Low level brainless people PSYOP
It's known as low average siops
Can you look into these obviously AI UA-cam ads? They are absurd and concerning especially when health related - "stop drinking water if you have high blood pressure, and do this trick instead" like Thing, your shirt is panicking, please stop giving the public fake health advice thx
