For myself i alway loved near, Then i read the manga and i realised that the main problem with Near is that the anime messed up the pacing and only gave him 10 episodes whereas is was in half of the manga and that meant he had more time to be fleshed out and more distinguished from L. Near wasn't the problem, the pacing of the show was

honestly the death of L was light's true death. Not having him around, he didn't have anyone to keep him sharp. it made him dull. able to make lots of mistakes because he acted as if L was the true threat. but Near was the true threat here. able to use lights weaknesses against him, all just because L died. You could call it Karma, but I call it the Beauty of removing things that trouble you.. can also spell your end..
