Simple tips, tricks and help with all things mechanical...and others. :-)
Briggs & Stratton Valve Adjustment
This video shows how to adjust valves on a 18.5 hp single cylinder Briggs & Stratton engine. This is a common engine found on John Deere Z225 riding mowers.
The procedures are the same for most Briggs & Stratton single cylinder engines, but make sure you have the right specs by looking for the correct repair manual and finding the correct specifications for your specific engine. Here are the links:

Thank you. There are two TDC positions> Compression and Exhaust. Sure it is supposed to be loose rockers at that point. But if they have been off...doing a head gasket. They are not even fastened nor are they there to let you know you are compression.. So question would be how to determine top dead center on compression stroke? Very confusing to me.
Great Video
Thanks!
You mention to rotate the engine counter clockwise, while others turn clockwise. This vide is very helpful, but has me slightly confused now. Is there a reason you state to rotate different than others?
Thanks for the question Matthew. I'm following the instructions in the repair manual referenced in the video. The manual calls for counterclockwise rotation.
@@diymoto4139 B&S website says for OHV engines rotate clockwise, I don't see that it really matters. www.briggsandstratton.com/na/en_us/support/faqs/browse/valve-repair-maintenance.html
