My bike is almost identical to yours and it's got a B-17 Flyer. It's a seat you really don't notice or think about which is exactly what you want in a bike seat. On my Surly LHT the only thing that bothers me is road shock from the handlebars. Just ordered a Kinetk spring loaded bar stem which together with the B-17 Flyer should take the sting out of road vibration.

Finally got a chance to use the rack on a bikepacking trip. It performed fine, but the finish took a beating. Glad I got silver instead of black. Just be aware you will need to position your panniers as far back on the rack as you can so you won't have heel strike. A longer top rail would be nice. Overall, it does the job and you can't beat the price.

My NW solo is seated for kneeling, leaned over hard, and paddled with a single blade. With the 15.5' hull and differential rocker, that just seems to make the most sense. To each their own, but I feel like a lot of double bladers are missing out on the satisfaction that comes from learning to effectively use a single blade. "Paddle Your Own Canoe, An Illustrated Guide to the Art of Canoeing" by Gary & Joanie McGuffin is another great resource I've found for paddling dedicated solo canoes.

@@mkvnwk I enjoy the McGuffin's books. I kind of think it's a bit like why e bikes are becoming so popular. Many people on e bikes don't really need one, but they like that they're faster and easier to pedal. I think a little bit of that mentality has creeped into the paddling world.

Agree 100%. I’ve been paddling since the 70s. At first I thought it might be the shorter WW kayak paddle I was trying w my Old Town Pack. But I borrowed a super long one with the drip rings and same thing. Not as bad but still super annoying. Single blade is where it’s at for canoes. Now that I’m old and fishing/ paddling mostly flat water I’m gonna try a nice wooden beaver or otter tail. I love the feel of a nice wooden paddle, I’ve used a wooden Silver Creek WW kayak paddle for years.

That's a fun area. There's supposed to be a portage somewhere between Bar Lake and Council Lake. I passed through the Council Lake chain of lakes last year and then down the river through Wide Waters and really liked that whole area, minus the many blow downs in the river above Bar Lake.

Just discovered your channel and I have subscribed. If you like the Brooks B-17 for your touring bike, you might consider the B-17 Imperial. It is the one with the carve out. If you are skilled with your hands, you could attempt to cut a carve-out in your existing B-17. If that worked you would avoid having to break in another saddle, not mention the cost savings. Anyway, just a thought. I am into backpacking, biking and have done some canoeing in the past. I also like your part of the country. I have a couple buddies from high school who live in Bayfield, Wisconsin. Take care, Dave

Flyer gets so comfortable for 12h+ touring days I'd rather just continue sitting on it. The springs must make a huge difference, it's not just about bumps but movement side to side too, because B17 is far from being as comfortable.

I just got my NW Solo about a month ago (my 5th solo over 40 years). Within 15 min of purchase I had it upside down in a local lake to test inherent flotation. It confirmed my hunch that additional flotation is needed. Let the mods begin. I prefer to sit and use a footbrace for touring, with the option to kneel if things get dicey. Like you, I was not able to get my feet under in low seat position. It seems to me that the kneeling drops will likely put the seat too high for sitting. (mind you, I only tested that position on the showroom floor). So, I cut off 1" of the front and 1.5" off the back of the drops. I tested one wet exit, and I separated from the canoe easier than I thought. Give it a try. Other mods are in progress.

    • @yooperventures2830

I switched out the sitting drops with kneeling drops. For me it's a game changer. I was used to the kneeling seat from a Mad River Independence I paddled for many years. When I need to stretch my legs out the sitting position seems no more tippy then it was originally. I've been doing a lot of fishing in it and love it. Looking forward to testing it in big waves and loaded with portage packs.

Thanks. Glad you liked the review. The mirror is made by Mirrycle. It's intended to be attached in the bar end, but obviously can't due to the shifters. It has two elbows that are pivot points. I removed the lower portion of the mirror stem that includes the section that goes into the bar end. I attached the remainder of the mirror stem to the handlebar using a seatpost reflector clamp. I have the stock drop bars and I find it works best right at the bar end position.
