    Does Adam know about this? I will let him know. A GREAT production. Hard music.

    Adam's music is complicated, like Sondheim, Rick Gordon. I played on Myths and Hymns. Audra, Lilias White, Billy Porter took a van to NorthHampton, Mass. Maybe the most fun I have ever had in my life. I love all of this, Peter.

    The Australian Opera (Opera Australia now) always had a great track record with G&S back to the 1970s and earlier, but they have virtually forsaken this repertoire now for the more lucrative charms of big-brand musicals. A pity really, as I'm not at all sure that musicals lead people to opera itself in quite the same way that G&S did.

    This is the best version of The Mikado. Only the Aussies will notice the 1985 dignitaries inserted into the lyrics and some of the dialogue. Brings back memories from that decade. Especially from the outspoken Fred bloke who would tell all heathens to go down the river Nile...

      WideTube Vision4: No, this not the best version. As in most recent modern versions, there is, as someone mentioned, too much clowning, a mix match of styles and weak attempts at humor. Instead of trusting Gilbert and Sullivan’s humor and vocal characterizations (soprano, lyric mezzo, contralto, tenor, light baritone, bass-baritone and basso), it’s all a poor mish mash and borders on racial intensity. BUT, not all is lost as D’Oyly Carte taped an excellent traditional production that appears here. Look for it, enjoy it and see how the other versions like this do not measure up.

    With those hats and sideburns, the gentleman of the chorus looked more like authodox Jews than Japanese men.

    • @robertmwoodley1502
      @robertmwoodley1502 3 роки тому

      Obviously most of the chorus are of European descent, dressed and made up in a mixture of Victorian Britain with Japanese references. The whole operetta is presented as a Victorian Music Hall production.

    The late Dame Heather Begg had a great voice but as a mezzo-soprano, she doesn’t have the depths of tone of a true contralto as needed for Katisha. Obviously both ranges overlap (and G&S did include some bars of optional higher notes for Katishas who had them) and whilst she hits the notes in these very low bars between her entrance and “oh fool that flee’st...”, they sound lifelessly thin rather than the warmer, earthy quality you find from contralto like the late Chris James, Nichola McAuliffe or Jill Pert. Much the same with Dame Felicity Palmer - she was a soprano who dropped to a mezzo in her late-30s and sang Katisha in her early 40s, and had the same difference in quality that removes a lot of the grandeur and power of Katisha’s solos. The part is G#3-F5: for a contralto that’s mostly in chest and mixed registers with only D#5-G#5 in head voice. For a mezzo soprano, the lowest notes are almost at the lower limit of their chest range and it goes up into mixed register from C4 rather than F4 for a contralto, who can sing much more of it in chest voice and give it some well. Obviously the few higher notes like “shall reign triumphant over all” around E5/F5 can sound great in top-end of mixed register on a mezzo vs contralto head voice but the bulk of the rôle is low notes which need to be sung in true chest voice - the passaggi for contralto are D#4 and D5 versus E/F4 and E/F5 for mezzo soprano and the piece is written with that in mind so on a mezzo (esp. one who is a “fallen soprano”), that’s a lot of notes in the weakest spots in the voice, hence that thinner sound. Still I do enjoy the acting of the performance and much prefer this staging to the “musically modernised” Australian production that keeps doing the rounds....!

    • @MrCuddlyable3
      @MrCuddlyable3 3 роки тому

      @peter benedict The inauthentic non-Gilbertian references to Crocodile Dundee, Queensland and Mrs. Poo suggest that this is an Australian per-version. It MIGHT be the Lyric Opera of Queensland with conductor Robert Andrew Greene in 2014 or 2015. In any case, Katisha is excellently played here.

    Should be a song where they fall in love with each other and they have no chemistry.

    • @TheSpinDoctor
      @TheSpinDoctor 3 роки тому

      Agreed. The direction isn’t great in this version - once you get beyond the innovative staging it falls quite flat. Even more recent casts over the decades have had the same issue as the direction doesn’t *allow* them to fall in love during the song, basically.
