Therapists Review the Whole Brain Child Book | Therapist Thrival Guide Episode 48
What about when they give you a black eye and then tell you to lie to the school that your shiner came from falling down the stairs?
It's on the dad in that situation to stand up for his relationship with his kid. Especially if he knows what mom is like
"no I'm not comfortable with that" is not a good excuse.
So true! My therapist as a teenager said i should bring my mum to my sessions because alot of my problems came from our relationship. I was honest and we both cried and i left feeling like we'd have a break through. As soon as we were in the car though she went crazy telling me she couldnt believe I'd tell my therapist these things. My therapist couldn't understand why i refused to speak up in the next session with her there..
Yes. Family therapy when I was young only made things worse. It's not healthy for children to be going to therapy, because often times it's not the child that is the problem. But sending them to therapy instead of the parents going is like telling the child it's all their fault and they need to be fixed. If you send your child to therapy, you should probably be going as well. Most of the kids I met at mental institutions also had narcissistic parents who made their children go insane. We all joked about how our parents should be the ones in therapy. It was a common topic.
I would want anyone to do that for me. Wouldn’t you? That’s a g
"You don't have any problems, do you?" I was often asked that by my mother in front of other adults. It wasn't about asking me if I had problems. It was about getting me to prove to other people that my mother had raised a kid without problems. I always said no, and on the occasions when I bought problems up with her at home in private, the first thing she would say was "But you always say you don't have any problems"
What about narcissist therapists?
🐂 💩 😂
Junk science... there are more Therapists in Therapy than any other profession and convince you that the solution is more therapy. I used to look at therapy as having some validity, but when I read about it I realised that the founding fathers of this Pseudoscience like Freud and Jung were disturbed and perverted and listened to spirit guides and, in the end, virtually going mad. I think you would get more help from a concerned family member than a therapist.
So true
So true
Uuhhhuuum, hees soo naaaaaaarrsesistiiic 🇺🇸 Prettymuch all the emojies was in that short conversation.
If they make online content of eating or content baded on them just looking into a camera.
Narcissist......Narcissist..... Narcissist..... 😂😂😂 The most OVERUSED word in the "therapy" world today.... 😂 Haven't occurred yet that YOU MIGHT BE THE PROBLEM????
That was our purpose in creating this episode-- some terms are way overused and actually not used correctly.
@@TherapistThrivalguideI’m sure it’s the husband’s you continue to call narcissists
Great questions! This was really interesting. I would like to hear more specific details to give visuals of the sand trays. It would also be nice to actually see the storage set ups for materials on the video. Thanks for sharing!
Great suggestions!
With a few exceptions, why do you need boundaries? I have like 3 boundaries and that is it.
Whining has given me nothing but a headache. Four sessions deep…feel like I’m growing a vag
My favorite kind of video. Informative using easy language thst's easy to understsnd. You can barely ever find something like this!!!
Glad it was helpful!
I am an mcot worker , and suicide is the primary area I work in. This was a good video

Thank you ❤ the doctor lady with the red earphones explained it so well. Wow 😊
Glad you found it helpful! Alice is amazing.
Hmmm, reifying "hope". Hope of what? For what? Such an American thing to base your worldview on. Life's hard, and then you die. That's the reality.
Hope is a hard concept to reify sometimes. It can come from a lot of places, people, and experiences. It's all going to depend on what parts of life you have found in the past or currently find enjoyable or worth the hardship. Thanks for the comment and engagement-- it's always so interesting and helpful to see what people take away from these episodes.
I am someone that struggles with suicidality. Actually the reason I clicked on this video. A couple thoughts I had watching this: I think personally speaking you guys are spot on about asking questions and the risk that poses. If anything I left offices at the same level of risk I walked in with. The questions didn’t increase those thoughts. I think he was spot on when he said losing hope was some of the darkest moments to be in. That’s a tunnel that has no light. Also, I knew about 988, but I didn’t know you could text and call I just thought it was one or the other.
I really appreciate the time you took to watch this and comment with your thoughts. We as a whole mental health system need to do a better job of not shying away from conversations about suicidality and educating one another on what's actually helpful. Again, thanks for the comment and sending you warm thoughts during the holidays!

Hello, how are you? I am a regular viewer of your UA-cam channel. I came here to say that- "I always learn something new from your channel-so valuable!" Good Luck to You .
Thank you!
@@TherapistThrivalguide Your videos are not SEO-friendly. you must do video SEO to get good results. SEO increases views, If you can increase the views, you will be able to advance your channel a lot. What is the benefit of making a video so hard? If views, likes, subscribers are not? So I say, first organize the channel nicely, SEO the videos and then release the videos, then you will get good results. This will benefit you a lot, you will be able to improve your channel with very little cost SEO.
"you loaded the dishwasher wrong, again" Lucas always makes me laugh.
Can you please cover therapy with children/adolescents that have been diagnosed with ODD? I would find it incredibly helpful being in grad school. Thanks!
GREAT suggestion!
GUYS!!! You’ve got to have Dr. Scott Eilers on for an interview. He’s a psychologist with a private practice. He’s on UA-cam and his channel is all about helping people who are not getting the help they need from therapy. He’s gone thru crippling depression and anxiety, and he knows that what graduate programs teach is inadequate. in NO way do they provide any idea of how to practically help or talk to their clients in real life. I think he’s right up your alley. Please please please 🙏
I'll have to look him up! Thank you for the suggestion!
This is a great podcast. Nice job!
Thanks for listening!
After 5 years yes but not before. That's what the ethics code says.
This show is so challenging for me. I generally never watch shows with therapists because of how unethical/badly portrayed/ unrealistic we are. I avoided this for a while and I’m enjoying it, whilst grimacing all throughout. How do you live with someone AND practice therapy with them at the same time. A previous client living in my pool house would be egregious, but LIVING with me AND practising therapy at the same is so problematic.
Exactly our thoughts!
As a veteran with a permanent blast injury that comes with chronic pain that has a 34% suicide rate, the VA has a very straight forward way of getting two answers from me with one question: "what's your pain level?" 1= great day (I'm taking opioids) 2= better than usual (I'm taking ibuprofen) 3= usual 4= bit more than usual but I'm good 5= something is off, but tolerable 6= calling the clinic, becoming intolerable 7= thinking of suicide, pain is intolerable and it's messing with my head (mentally compromised), going to ER 8= looking for ways to kill myself, looking to make the pain stop, will try to stop myself from being impulsive but might not be able to , calling 988 9= totally impulsive, actively doing anything to make it go away, calling 911, reset to pain level 1 So if I say 3 they are happy but if I say 7, they know that's my way of saying "help me" without saying another word That's the safety plan I had with the VA for 18 years and it's as simple as that
Tools like these can be really helpful for clinicians, especially when they can be tailored to your clients. Thank you for your service.
Great pod! Thanks!! 🙏
Thank you!
I loved both Inside Out movies, and they really helped open my eyes to my own struggles with my own mental health, and they really helped me realize that it's okay to not be okay, and that all my emotions are there to help me!
So happy to hear that!
thanks for the video. I''m 2mo away from getting LMSW. I need to find a new professional for professional therapist, so its good to see such qualified professionals associated with Ellie.
Good luck on your LMSW!
Great information! Thank you for posting it!
Dance/movement therapist here! I love watching your videos and love that you’re giving a spotlight to the creative arts therapies. However, I think it’s really misleading to state that any therapist can do “art therapy” by utilizing these art prompts. Art therapy, like other creative arts therapies, requires specialized training and credentialing, as Chelsea and Kailah mentioned having received. Any therapist can utilize creativity and “therapeutic artmaking” with their clients. However acknowledging that art therapy is a distinct and specialized therapy helps contribute to its recognition and legitimization. As a dance/movement therapist I run into the same thing all the time - by all means, therapists can incorporate the body and movement into their client work (which can make for a much more holistic and healing experience imo). However to call it dance and/or movement therapy is unethical. That takes away from the very specialized training and expertise that dance/movement therapists work for years to gain! :) Great video otherwise and would love to see more videos about this topic.
Thanks for the comment! After talking to some other art therapists, we added the note/disclaimer in the episode description: "The American Art Therapy Association website clearly defines and explains that to be an art therapist, one MUST attend a master’s level program in the field of art therapy, but it’s important to realize that any therapist can incorporate art into their practice."
This is really helpful. I have so many kids (especially ADHD) who get annoyed w the narration lol
I'm loving this Podcast, please keep up the great work everyone! As an LMHC who has transitioned from agency work to private practice over the last year I'm loving the many different topics you post on.
Thank you!
I respectfully disagree - if you are in a monogamous relationship and your partner approaches you to say “I’m catching feelings for someone else, can we open up our relationship and be poly?” - that’s a recipe for disaster, bc the asker is already in a state of betrayal. For this therapist to say “those are her things to work on” is dismissive and unfair. Like, that’s only true if that couple had started opening their partnership to other relationships *before* the client’s partner came to her - he (assuming it’s a “he” for some reason) came to her after he was already into someone else - that trust was broken; he had already betrayed her. A better thing for a therapist to do would be to suggest that the client’s partner break off that burgeoning relationship, at least for awhile, while the original couple considers and learns about polyamory from a place of trust and respect. Then perhaps that other, new relationship might be explored again, if client and her partner have decided it’s okay and the work has been put in. For the client’s partner to come to her to ask for something he already was getting into is not honoring his partner’s heart, agency or trust. Signed, a fellow therapist who works within the community
And again, I say all of that with utmost respect.
Thanks for engaging and adding your thoughts here!
Agreed. Opening up FOR a specific person is a recipe for disaster. Much more effective to open up because it’s either something you’re interested in in general, or because you feel that this is the way you are
Awesome conversation. I was happier to see this movie than my own 9 year old hahaha. I say often it was emotional awareness for kids but a message of healing for adults.
Perfectly said!
Great episode, I have to watch the movie
Thank you!
loved this episode
