DIY Flex Joint Repairs - Rebuild Your RockJock (Currie) Johnny Joints - Bad Goat Off Road
Most people don't realize that modern control arm flex joints are a wear item and need to be kept greased, and occasionally either rebuilt or replaced. A loose control arm joint can feel like the start of death wobble, normally associated with other worn components and cause the unnecessary wear or replacement of other parts of your suspension and steering. Rebuilding them is actually pretty simple. In fact getting the control arm off your Jeep might be the hardest part to the whole effort. Follow along as we rebuild one of the upper control arm Johnny Joints on Bad Goat. I'm using RockJock (formerly Currie) Johnny Joints and think they are one of the best options for a reasonably priced, very durable flex joint.

A short drive in my Jeep - 5.3 LS 1965 CJ5 Tuxedo Park. No talking, no music, just motor and gears!
Переглядів 227Рік тому
How is it to drive an LS swapped Jeep? Especially a super light weight short nosed early CJ5? This Jeep weighs around 3,000 lbs and the mildly crammed LS makes around 400-420 hp. It'll pass anything but a gas station. You know you want one. It's actually quite civil around town and has no problem doing 70-75 on the highway for as long as you'd like. The motor is a 5.3L LY5 block from a 2007 Sil...

Everyone loves beadlock wheels on their Jeeps, Toyotas, Buggies, and other off-road vehicles. But are you properly maintaining your beadlocks? And what happens when one of those threaded inserts is damaged or stripped? We will look at how to repair or replace the insert on a damaged beadlock wheel. Please note that these are not Helicoils. These inserts are made from solid steel, not just a wou...
Carribbean Reef Octopus, St Croix, USVI

When I'm not working, I spend my time exploring the ocean around St Croix. This is easily the biggest octopus I've seen in the Caribbean. Octopus briareus. He was hunting for dinner. There is a large crab behind him that he was trying to catch before I interrupted him.

    I just got ahold of of a tuxedo edition. Cj5a. Traded something for it. Not sure if I’m going to keep and build it or sell it now. Was told it’s a little rare. Has a 283 from a vett in it.

    Do you have torque at low rrm?

    • @badgoatoffroad
      @badgoatoffroad 2 роки тому

      Yes, even with the LS9 cam, the bottom end torque is plentiful. This cam makes around 300 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm according to the testing done by Richard Holdner and peaks around 393 lb-ft at 5,100 rpm. Also, my 5.3 is an LY5 Gen IV block that runs at 9.9:1 compression vs. the LM7 Gen III block at 9.5:1 compression that Holdner used. The motor would easily support 39s or bigger with matching gears. And would be awesome in a mud or sand racer where you need to wind the RPMs out. With a set of rear paddle tires, it would probably pull a wheelie in the sand.

    I am in way of this conversion.. Are you happy with ls9 camshaft?

    • @badgoatoffroad
      @badgoatoffroad 2 роки тому

      For this build yes. The LS9 cam does rob power on the bottom end, but the Jeep is so light that it really doesn't matter. And if you want to rev it to 6500 RPM to get all the ponies you can. I did upgrade the valve springs and have the rev limiter set at 6500, but the motor should turn 7000 RPM if I wanted it to. I would not use this cam for a hot rod or a street car/truck.

    Do you have any photos how close is the steering?

    • @badgoatoffroad
      @badgoatoffroad 2 роки тому

      I used a double u-joint and two single u-joints with a couple of carrier bearings to route the steering shaft under the motor mount. You will need to mock yours up and see what it'll take with your configuration.

    Hi what header do you have?

    • @badgoatoffroad
      @badgoatoffroad 2 роки тому

      I used inside the frame rail headers from Advance Adapters since I was using their motor mounts. They fit well, but don't leave much space for the steering shaft. I had to get creative to make the steering work.

    Great Build, I’m looking to do the same to my 66, what radiator did you use?

    • @badgoatoffroad
      @badgoatoffroad 3 роки тому

      I used a universal LS Swap radiator from Be Cool via Summit. Radiator and fan spacing is the biggest challenge with putting a V8 in one of these short nose CJ5s. You will have to shave the shrouding off the grill, and I also shaved the back of the headlight buckets and used a super thin LED headlight. I also used two small electric fans so the fan motors wouldn't interfere with the motor pulleys and intake. It'll take a bit of creativity to make it all fit right.

    So many questions. What radiator is that and what motor mounts did you use? Which trans? What gauges are those?

    • @badgoatoffroad
      @badgoatoffroad 3 роки тому

      Radiator is from Be Cool, motor mounts are from Advanced Adapters, transmission is an SM465, gauges are from Speedhut. Sorry for the late reply.

    Stock axels ? What transmission and transfer case did you use

    • @badgoatoffroad
      @badgoatoffroad 3 роки тому

      Axles are Dana 44s from a mid 70s Jeep J10 truck. Transmission is an SM465 adapted to a standard CJ5 Dana 18 transfer case.

    I want to do this swap to my cj5.. What flywheel you have use end what bell housing?

    • @badgoatoffroad
      @badgoatoffroad 3 роки тому

      The flywheel and Centerforce clutch came from Advanced Adapters. The bell housing is a stock aluminum GM bell housing for the SM465 with the factory provision for a hydraulic clutch.

    Hi.. Nice motor.. Your steering box is a saginaw from yj?

    • @badgoatoffroad
      @badgoatoffroad 3 роки тому

      No, it's from an 1995 Grand Cherokee. The ZJ steering boxes are quick ratio boxes.

    What motor mounts did you use?

    • @badgoatoffroad
      @badgoatoffroad 3 роки тому

      I used the mounts from Advanced Adapters and welded them to the frame once we had the motor where we wanted it. The motor is shifted about 1" to the driver side to allow room for the front driveshaft.

    What did you have to do for drive shafts??

    • @badgoatoffroad
      @badgoatoffroad 4 роки тому

      I ordered custom length drive shafts from Tom Woods. The rear is a double cardan shaft and is 14.5 inches long. The front uses standard 1310 u joints and is around 33 inches.
