1 Minute vs 4 Hours: Why Exposure Time Matters More Than You Think
In this video, I want to show you how important exposure time is in astrophotography and the differences it makes when you gather a longer exposure time. Many astrophotographers often ask me what the perfect exposure time is to capture a good image of a deep-sky object. In this video, I’ll try to answer that question.

    Do you mean overall “integration” or single frame exposure? If it is about integration, then you need to show differences between 32h, 64h and 128h integrations. This will be more relevant than 1h versus 4h, which is no brainer.

      @@FelixsAstrophotography I compared 24, 48 and 72h. There is difference between 24 and 48 hours, 72h doesn’t give apparent benefits. However, if someone is making pictures of super dim nebulae, then I think it will matter. Those pictures are 100+ hours-long and done by combining data from several people. Do you want to do pictures of such objects?!

    I have an ancient EQ 5 which I love. Got two extra 10kg weights made for it by my local iron monger and it handles my 10" Newt with ease [that is, with a total counter-weight mass of 30kg]. Polar alignment in the Southern Hemisphere is a pain - the stars in Octans are feint, espeically if there is light pollution. I use it in combo with Stellarium via a special cable to my laptop plus PHD guiding, with a Toupcam camera [2600 IMX 571], running Touptek software, which i find a joy to use. I think the total mass of the scope, guide-scope and camera, finder scope and imaging camera is 14kg. It feels to me like it could easily handle an additional two kg. My only limitation is that I am based in Cape Town, which is notoriously windy, and the 10" Newt struggles in these conditions. The shorter scopes work like a charm, unless the wind is absolutely wild [which is often the case in December and January]. I did intially try to use it without guiding, but guiding with a focal length of 1 000 mm is mandatory. I was surprsied at how easy it was to set up PHD guiding. Pro-tip - I have some old heavy magnets salvaged from old loud speakers, which I stick to the Newt to fine tune the balancing, especially to deal with the weight of the guide-scope.

      @FelixsAstrophotography 10 днів тому

      Hello. That's a good question. I'm actually surprised that you can't get the focus, since this version of the telescope was built specifically to be able to use most cameras. The only thing that could work is that you move the main mirror a little further towards the opening of the telescope. You can do that very easily using the adjustment screws. Loosen the small screws a little and then turn the adjustment screws. That's really easy. So you only need to turn the screws that are also intended for adjustment. Maybe that will help.

      In order to use a DSLR for astrophotography, you have to remove an attached adapter. However, due to the mount, I would not recommend this telescope for astrophotography. The Newton telescope itself can be used for astrophotography. I have already done that. However, since the mount too small to track such a telescope well, I would not recommend this telescope for astrophotography

    I have a Spica... got it from Bresser at 50% discount... Pollux is a bit better optically, but the mount is the same and... HORRIBLE! I got mine that was not moving as smooth as I expected so I was forced to take it apart and grease all over again to make it semi acceptable. The adjustment screws are... semi usable! I had to play with the screws to make it work. They either don't rotate the axis or it's slipping. Very NOT-precise as one would expect from a serious German company. The phone adapter is BASIC beyond belief! But, okay... you get what you paid for... same goes for eyepieces (but that's expected). The counterweight that I received was BARELY enough to balance the bare telescope! When I tried adding phone it went spinning already. God forbid even thinking about attaching ANY kind of camera or even a higher quality Barlow or eyepiece. I see that you have two counterweights here so this could help. I had to create a new weight by 3D printing the case and filling it with lead balls and resin... HOWEVER... I do not see if you have the same aluminum tripod. If you do, it's WORSE than HORRIBLE! The thing is soo wobbly that it's almost impossible even to focus to anything, so only the 20mm eyepiece looks sort-of okay on a normal (Spica is Bird-Jones) 1000mm. Should be okay on (better) Pollux that's 750mm. I doubt that 4mm will be of much use, and forget the Barlow 3x. Useless. I do NOT recommend Spica even at 200€ (normal price is advertised at around 350€) Pollux should be slightly better optically, but the mount and the tripod... NOPE! Frankly, I don't think you can get anything worth the trouble below the 1500-2500€ price tag :( Newtonians on EQ mount in general are very clumsy. Getting it in a right position to be able to look through the eyepiece is... Dobson type is better for beginners. However, if I'd go for reflector, it would likely be some Maksutov-Cassegrain type. But... I prefer refractors. Problem is, they must be apochromatic which again... costs more :( So, yeah... 1500€ is lower end of acceptable if you wish to watch anything else but Moon and Sun, more if you want to enter photography, except is you already own a good camera (starting at 500€) and a lens (starting at 500-1000€), in which case you'll have to get only a good mount (starting at 350-500€). Entry level Newtonians are waste of money... you'll end up replacing them anyway :)

      Hello. If I understand correctly, it's about how to photograph the sun. First of all, it's very important that the telescope has a solar filter. You have to attach this solar filter to the telescope. Never observe the sun without a solar filter.When observing or photographing the sun, you must always use a solar filter. Then you attach the eyepiece to the telescope and then attach the smartphone adapter to the eyepiece. That's all. And now you can take your first pictures of the sun.😊📷

    Amazing video man. Am a beginner looking to build my first astrophotography setup for DSOs. The budget is tight. I am going to get a canon 2000D a canon EF 75 to 300mm lens and the OG star tracker. What's your opinion on it do you have any other recommendations.

      Thank you for your comment. If you want to start astrophotography and don't want to spend a lot of money, this is the best equipment in my opinion. You will achieve great results with this. More videos about this lens will follow.Which star tracker do you want to buy?

      @@FelixsAstrophotography hey thanks a lot for answering. Am currently looking at the 3d printed star tracker called OG star tracker just because the next cheapest option for a tracker Like the ioptron or the sky adventurer are all like closer to 400€.

      English is my second language, and his accent sound fine to me. His mic is the real problem here. He might need to put it closer to his mouth. May I know the mic you are using?

    • @jnhkx
      @jnhkx 25 днів тому

      @@FelixsAstrophotography Its look fine enough. I mean, even the phone mic if using correctly will result in more than usable sound. As I said before, try clip that mic on your shirt would help a lot. Greater than that probably place your mic 3-6 inches in front of your mouth about 45 degrees off the center, can be downward/left/right. These little mic need some proximity to sound good.

    To be honest, the cheaper scope did a better job. 1- less background noise. 2- you never used the coma corrector on the cheaper scope, so it would have delivered even sharper images with the coma corrector. 3- the image has more detail than the more expensive scopes image. If you are going to do a comparison video on scopes, then you must image with the same for both scopes, like use the coma corrector with both scopes.

    • @FelixsAstrophotography
      @FelixsAstrophotography Місяць тому

      You are absolutely right. There is actually a lot more noise in the picture with the more expensive telescope. I also like the colors a little better with the cheaper telescope. However, if you zoom in a little, you can clearly see that there are more details with the more expensive telescope. Unfortunately, you can't see that so well in the video. However, if I look at the picture in full resolution on the computer, you can see it. Thank you very much for your comment. 😊🙏

      @TobeGH3 24 дні тому

      I think he mentioned that the moon was more dominant when he used the Skywatcher scope, so that would explain the difference in noise. A telescope itself cannot really "produce noise", that comes from the camera and the light pollution.

    • @FelixsAstrophotography
      @FelixsAstrophotography 24 дні тому

      You are absolutely right. I mentioned that. Maybe I will make another video like that and make sure to have the same conditions for both telescopes
