7x16 Cargo Trailer Conversion
In April, we started the audacious journey of building our own camper/tiny home when we couldn’t find one on the market that met our needs.
The trailer itself is a 7x16 Cargo Craft trailer we bought from Colorado Trailers out of Castle Rock, CO and then we went to work on building everything inside. The project started with about 250 hours of research and then we wrapped up the build in late June after about 500 hours of build time.
There were plenty of times we wanted to quit, but we’re pretty happy with the end product!

Wow, being able to pull in water from a stream and filter it well is nice. That could allow you to stay in one play for a LONG time
Very professional, practical build. You got skillz!!!
@@jeffbaker5038 thanks! Appreciate you!
Love the trailer. About the Gladiator: 1) which engine does it have and 2) how does the Jeep handle towing in the mountains and offroad?
@@johnstride5761 it’s the 3.6l V6 Gas Engine. The Gladiator is rated for 7,000 pounds and does surprising well (for a jeep) towing the trailer (ours is around 5,500 pounds fully loaded). You definitely can tell the engine is working towing over passes, and MPG is between 7-10, but overall stability, breaking, etc has been fine for us. I try to only get to 80% of a vehicles max tow capacity, which is why we were meticulous about stopping at 5,500 lbs for our build.
@theoffroadnomads8341 I suspected the mountains would push the V6. I have towed heavy trailers with full-size diesel trucks in the mountains and enjoyed four jeeps that were never used for towing. Love the concept of the Gladiator but the engine should be upgraded -- it is a truck, not a Wrangler. Unfortunately, the diesel has been dropped and Stellantis is hanging on by the thinnest of threads. Worse, the aftermarket has not bypassed the GPEC5 yet, so no forced induction available on late-model Gladiators. Perhaps a Colorado ZR2? How satisfied are you with the build quality of the trailer? Would you buy one again?
Nice conversion. I am looking at a 7x16 to convert to a camper/ATV hauler. I haven't done one before but wondering if it can be done where I an haul a Honda Rancher and keep the unit under 4000lbs total. I plan to use an aluminum frame trailer to save 900lbs of weight. Hauling with a 2012 Ford F-150 with a 3.7L V6
@@thetrailninja3791 aluminum will certainly help. Weight is a tricky one. We started at 3,500 stock, and were meticulous to stay below 6,000 pounds total with the build. Good luck!
absolutely love it.... I think I'd trade off the garage area for a very nice size wet bath/shower area. I'd put my bike on a bumper rack via a hitch install and cover it well along with a double kryptonite lock which will help keep the thieves away....
@@HollywoodConnection-jast thanks for watching! Great ideas!
Great job one of the best best wishes 😊
Where the baffroom iz?

Id have to make the table walkable
Nice job. Does the Jeep pull all that no problem?

This is EXACTLY what I have been researching for. Thank you for your hard work figuring it out and posting it.

What thickness of the playmats for the flooring did you use?
@@yvettemcniece4784 3/8”. These ones specifically a.co/d/74WasiF
Where is the toilet and shower?
Any reason you did not select the tip-down bed option. The space gain and outdoor feel is significant. We had years of use out of our pop -u camper with slide -out beds of a similar type.
It wasn’t a feature when we first bought the trailer.
We are in the market for a 7 x 14 version of the same brand. Yours is a great conversion. Are you still happy with Gladiator cabinets? What brand of water heater did you install? Does it waste much water?
@@johnstride5761 nice! They’re great trailers. We’re about to sell this one and buy a 8.5x24 from them to have more office space since we work remotely full time. Love the Gladiator cabinets. It’d be one of my top recommendations to people looking to do their own build. Light, extremely sturdy, and love the ability to swap out butcher block countertops from any Lowe’s if needed. We use the Joolca Hot Tap for a water heater, but only for the shower. We didn’t install one for the sink.
What did the Colorado Trailer cost. Love your Bluetti System. Man, ton of solar - what we're the brand of your panels
Thanks! Trailer was ~$20k. We used Renogy panels. Two 320w panels and two 200w panels.
@theoffroadnomads8341 They really make some great trailers
Y'all put this together very nicely 🤙🏽 The garage space is pretty cool
Thanks for watching!
Nice build What is dimensions, size? Of bed? Or bed frame?
@@tinocoboy1 bed frame is 74"L x 53"W x 1.6"Th. Here’s the link: a.co/d/4RjiQow
I love your trailer.... i watch your video frequently. Hopefully one day I'll buy one, I want it to be this beautiful.
Really appreciate that, and thank you for watching!
Shitty that you still use the generic cargo trailer latches. So easy to break into. Happens all the time. Also someone could easily lock you in the trailer while you sleep.
Im sorry if i mossed this but how did go about mounting the cabinets to the walls? Looking to do the same with the same kind of trailer, never even considered metal cabinets!
@@weezerbot4 highly recommend the gladiator cabinets. 3 years and they look brand new. I built some under cabinet storage to create a toe kick, so they’re screwed into that as well as directly into the wall below. I just drilled a few small pilot holes and then screwed directly into the wall.
Get a 3/4 ton truck to properly tow this trailer, jeep too small...
Save money Allow plumbing And electrical You do the rest Any furniture U desire Bolts the same
Hello brother, I have been reading the comments, I have a Diesel Gladiator, is your jeep diesel? I’m traveling to Colorado next month to check out the trailer at Colorado trailer and probably buy one, I was thinking about a 14’ trailer but after seeing your video I may get the 16’ I was worried about towing the 16’ trailer with my jeep but reading your comments I think I going to be fine One question, where did you get the cabinets from?
Mine is the gas 3.6. I don’t think there is a huge weight difference between the 14’ and the 16’. I don’t know what the diesel is rated for. Mine is about ~7,000 pounds. Tows fine overall. Just be prepared to be going a bit slower or if you’re wanting to stay at high speed, engine will just be at higher RPM and thus worse gas mileage.
@@theoffroadnomads8341 thx sir for the info.

How does your jeep tow that trailer? The trailer looks pretty heavy? And really nice video btw.
I’m surprised with how well it tows (for a Jeep). We’re not going anywhere fast, but from a stability perspective it does great. We struggle in open parts of Texas when the speed limit is 75mph because it wants to be in 5th or 4th. So we typically stay around 65 mph to be in 6th or 7th for better fuel economy. But all in all, for a jeep on 37s with stock 4:10 gears, it does great. Trailer is about 5,500 lbs fully loaded. Thanks for watching!
@@theoffroadnomads8341 wow that is still impressive! Thank you!

I'm curious what vehicle are you pulling this trailer with?
Jeep Gladiator with the 3.6 and Max Tow.

This is pretty genius, I actually don't live too far from Castle Rock, I've been wanting to do a build like this for a long time and I think I might actually steal your design
Appreciate ya! Go for it!
@@theoffroadnomads8341I absolutely love the drop-down bed, that's the best idea I've seen yet in a DIY camper build
@@Rocky-or4rz thanks! We racked our brains for awhile on space saving ideas. Our 1st plan was to build a raising system using electric actuators, but we’re glad we went this route as it keeps the head room above the dinette and was significantly cheaper.
NEW SUBSCRIBER HERE!!! LOVE the build, the presentation and the good vibes :) How heavy is the trailer (dry/wet)? Thanks!
Thanks for following along! The trailer stock was about 3,500 lbs. Dry is about 5,500 and wet is about 5,750.

Love the solar on top and power station as storage instead of batteries and inverters. Little more expensive but easier to reconfigure, move to another unit, etc.
Thanks! You’re exactly right. We wanted a system that would be easy to switch to a different build, be it another trailer, off-grid cabin, etc. Thanks for watching :)
Great set up! I would like to instal that Ikea grass on my cargo craft trailer. How did you attached them to the decking?

What if you have to pee or poop???
With it being custom built to match our needs, we didn’t prioritize things that may have been important to others. In our case, all the areas we stay during the summer have bathrooms under 5 mins away, either by bike or car. So while that may be inconvenient for others, it was worth it for us to not have to deal with emptying black tanks or utilizing the space required in the build. We have a propane heated outdoor hot water shower that we use all the time and a portable clean waste toilet but have never had to use it.
This is very cool. I like that it can be repurposed easily, as opposed to just getting a camper.
@@maxdaly8185 Thanks! That was our intention. If we ever wanted to change platforms or build an off grid camping, we could take this build back to a base cargo trailer in under a week.
Insurance? Can someone help me understand how it would work for something like this?
@@djmpath971 we use Progressive. They let you add things like cargo and horse trailers with the addition of living quarters + total value of contents. We just got it off their website :)

Really cool layout! I bet a simple lowering system could make raising/lowering the bed much less awkward on those cushions.
Thanks for watching! After raising and lowering it for over 300 nights, hasn’t been an issue for us.
I like how simple the trailer is. I completely agree with keeping the built-ins to a minimum.
Simple and easy! Thanks for watching.
How did you pass the solar wires through from panels to inside the trailer? I just received the exact same trailer this week and planning my solar setup. I don't see the typical gland. Love the build! Thanks.
I drilled a hole by one of the rear lights (up by the roof) then ran the cables down through the trim panel by the door. Originally, I was going to use one of those rooftop MC4 junction boxes as a pass through, but decided that would be just one more area for potential leaks, so chose the horizontal option to limit leaking potential.
