Part II: A Step-by-step Planting Onions | How to Grow Onions from Transplanting - Harvesting
How to Grow Onions in the Philippines?
A Step-by-step Procedure in Planting Onions (Transplanting - Harvesting)
It takes 80 days to Harvest
¤ Soil Preparation & Conditioning¤
Irrigate first the area. After 3 or 4 days, when the soil is almost dry, plow it.
After plowing leave it for 3 days then harrow it to break more soil.
Right after plowing, irrigate again the area.
After 4 days, spray an herbicide (Ronstar) to control the weeds.
Measurement: 100ml for 16L of water.
This method is proven by a farmer to condition the soil and for the better growth of the onions.
Please consider 2 weeks of soil preparation in transplanting before uprooting your seedlings.
¤Transplanting¤
Transplant your seedlings.
Irrigate the onions after 5 days of transplanting.
Right after Irrigating the plants, broadcast a fertilizer (Atlas 14-14-14)
After 3 days of irrigation Spray Herbicide (Ronstar & Oneside).
Measurement: In 16L of water add Ronstar 40ml & Oneside 60ml.
Wait for 10 days to irrigate it again. Right after that, broadcast the 14-14-14 Fertilizer
Spray Herbicide (Ronstar & Oneside) after 3 days of irrigation.
In 10 days, span, irrigate the onions again.
Right after irrigation, spray an insecticide (Wildkid 30 ½ ml & Brodan 40ml), Fungicide (Torogi 1cup), Foliar (Alpaz 560 40ml)
Measurement: in 16L of water add Wildkid 30 ½ ml & Brodan 40ml; Torogi 1cup & Alpaz 560 40ml
Wait another 10 days to irrigate it again. Add right after irrigation broadcast a fertilizer 0-0-17 for bulb development.
Note:
~IRRIGATION~
Continue to flood the onions after 10-14 days but, it’s not necessary to wait 10-14 days. You can irrigate the onions when the soil is already dry.
Before harvesting, flood the area in order to easily uproot the onions.
~SPRAYING~
Onions are prone to armyworms; therefore, farmers ALMOST regularly use insecticides.
~COST & RETURN ANALYSIS~
1 can of seeds = P2,200.00
Estimated cost per 1 can of onions from maintenance to labor cost:
P15,000.00 (initial investment)
***
It is better to invest in 2 cans of onions, to utilize the consumption of the fertilizer, insecticides, and other maintenance of the plants.
With 2 cans of onions, you can have 6 bags of 14-14-14 & 1 bag 0-0-17
You can have at least 90k - 100k of net income if the farm gate price is 45-50/kilo.
