    I want you to know that I'm resisting the urge to troll you and say: "That's just like overfitting!" But also do you feel like what you're describing has similarities to overfitting and if so could it be countered in the same ways someone counters rigid thinking?

      @MoshHewson Місяць тому

      I didn't even know about overfitting as a concept and it's funny that, yeah, it kind of is like that ahhahahaha When reading the ways to inhibit overfitting, it felt like to apply it to this, would be super buzzwordy and overly clinical, that fuck, might work some peeps, but I could see it having so many opportunities for a human to accidentally use trying to slam it through those filters as ways for something to be too hard to check it if sits in that or if it's not easily put through that framework, it might not be eligible or need to be! (Very very easy to do compared to just doing) Maybe?

    Shad doesn't claim to be any kind of HEMA Master or even a HEMA influencer. He's maybe done some in the past and has some familiarity with the terms and basic guards. He's never posted a video of him performing any HEMA techniques or sparring, which I think that says all you need to say about what he actually contributes to the HEMA community. But this video is more cringe than anything, especially with the fake/forced laughing. The only reason Shad's name is in the title is so you can ride the algorithm with common search terms.

  • @HiddenRealm

    I'll give you that he might not be the most trained dude in HEMA swordsmanship, but it does seem like most of his background in it is from years and years ago, probably around the same time he did what amount of natural arts training he did. The guy is making a full time job out of creating videos, he has kids and a family, he's doing projects qround his place, and he runs like three channels. I thought it was pretty obvious the guy isn't out there trying to do HEMA anymore, especially with his fatiguing health issues. What that doesn't mean is that, the guy can't practice and learn stuff on his own. What that doesn't mean is he can't at least learn history. This is like watching a sports player trying to dunk on someone for playing a sport, when that guy is just havibg fun with the history and idea of the game. He's not claiming to be some grandmaster of swordsmanship. This is some weird jock versus the more successful nerd type behavior... And your comments, I can tell it's just full of your echochamber of fans... It literally sounds like the stereotype of a bunch of goons laughing at the big guys' jokes parroting what he said, because they all crave your approval... Why the hate? Shad is real, but you were literally never on his radar, so why do you even think he'd hurt you? You can keep doing HEMA, leave Shad to his videos and book writing. If the only HEMA groups around him act like petty catty women that just gossip behind your back, I can see why he wouldn't even want to get involved anymore. And you're the fucking head coach? Is that the same as highschool head cheerleader now, because the stereotypical behavior fits. Like you have the other guy a pass for having a life... Meanwhile Shad is terraforming and building shit in a chunk of land he bought, wrote a novel that got released into a comic, Is running three different channels and operating a buisiness around content creation, and spends his life nerding out over shit he enjoys, and the biggest part: Has a loving wife and like three kids he's raising. So... Yeah? I think Shad's got a life too?

    • @Wveth
      @Wveth 2 місяці тому

      He thought Shad would be mad because Shad has a history of making long, rambling videos insulting people who criticize him, regardless of how nicely those criticisms are communicated. So he has a demonstrably thin skin, plus he tends to be very hypocritical in his responses. Of course the Internet is going to keep poking him. I used to be a big fan of his personally, and I credit him for kick-starting my interest in medieval history. I fell off when I saw some of his videos where he was acting like a complete D-bag the entire time, and he doesn't seem to be improving. His undue arrogance about his A.I. art just helped me understand even more that I was right to drop him. I am not generally a fan of laughing at people like Shad, I'm kinda just here checking up. But the Internet will always make sport of people who act like Shad.

      Nah, you clearly aren’t familiar with this. Firstly HEMA is relatively new. Various WMA groups existed but HEMA as we know it today probably wouldn’t have been around in his area 20 years ago. Secondly Shad has specifically said that he hasn’t read any sources or trained with any HEMA groups unless you count that one event he crashed. On top of that I actually do HEMA and the way Shad moves it is obvious to anyone with experience that he is completely untrained. He doesn’t even have basic beginner footwork or stances down. There’s no secret HEMA training he did years ago. He’s never done it. The issue is he’s claiming to do an activity he doesn’t do, and is misrepresenting a community he is not a part of. HEMA isn’t just “medieval themed fighting.” It is specifically studying from the historic sources, which he does not. It’s like claiming you do karate because you do some self taught knife hand chops in your backyard with your buddy.

    There was a passage I was reading today that reminded me of this video and I would like your take on it. It is on page 226 in Academy of The Sword (Chapter 15 after circle 15). 'But concerning the pauses that we require in the midst of the battle, it seems to them that they have good reason to argue. For they object that every moment that one does not seize and every eye blink in which one holds back, are indeed mistakes for one is not able to put the enemy in disorder, except by so much quickness that he does not know which part of us he ought to attack. They also object that if we try to do anything else then we will not be able to do anything useful, neither in attack, nor defense as slow movements will not be able to raise defenses to counter so many quick movements , which pass one way and another, and arrive before one is able to stop them.' This to me is a beautiful articulation of the Italian way of going about fencing and in particular the understanding of tempo which is different from the way Thibault does it. Fabris I think would say that lifting up your foot is a tempo so in this respect maybe Thibault is in dialogue with Fabris. I think Fabris would also say that holding your foot up for a period of time is also a tempo. The response to this criticism that Thibault gives is, 'I replay that it is not our intention to prize slowness alone and to devalue swiftness, but rather one ought to have it's proper place, and so indeed should the other;... the great preparations are not to be feared but rather the great attacks, and in order to accomplish the latter it is only necessary to be sure of 𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡.' So the thing that Thibault is prizing and is sacrificing for seems to be having that good approach. Which I think is probably one of the principles of Thibault, 'That which begins poorly cannot have a good end.' (Rule is from page 69 of Chapter 3). Thibault seems to have sacrificed the ability to punish the opponents at Larga for what he sees as a better approach. Do you think this sacrifice was worth it?

      What you have written here is fucking RAD I absolutely agree, one of the hardest parts of fencing at the moment for me is how easy it is to punish at larga while doing Italian fencing, and how difficult it is to do the same while standing upright. I don't know which is better, the running theory Woody Craig has is that Thibault becomes a strong meta play against that fencing ONCE everyone is playing that fencing regularly enough and it's widespread enough, but before that occurs, it's actually going to struggle to gain it's foothold in greater fencing because there is so much of it that may just not occur outside of a few small pockets of fencing around the world. The tempo actions themselves, I absolutely agree, and I think it has to do with how much bodyweight has to get disrupted to get that lift, The difference to lifting your right foot when all your weight is on your left foot, and lifting your right foot with varying percentages of your own bodyweight on that foot, where you will have to spend a slight moment adjusting before and during the lift, and that can create the action of commitment that they can blast through, combine that with the swords touching and the swords being found or not, and it tightens it up to not be as spooky, which I think is a really cool strength that Thibault has, that then you can develop not using those tools easier, fabris' fencing has gotten more intuitive because I CAN play the wrestle/bind/sword rub game some comfortably and I can feel what I must do if I'm effectively taking away those second sets of eyes and not touching. This was rad!

    Neat! I’ll have to play with it. I think the frustration answer to this would be retreating actions especially in sword and dagger. lol as far as upward beats go, they can be super funny when you can get people into circular actions! More of a later rapier thing but hilarious to disrupt people that get into things like the disengagement-counter disengagement loop
