I’m Sebastian, I make videos about archaeology, ancient history, and prehistory from the perspective of a professional archaeologist. Check out my podcast The Tel, for interviews with experts who study ancient cultures around the world. I am also quite active on Instagram, where I post photos of my archaeological field work and other travels.
So far I’ve done fieldwork in Alaska, Colorado, Nebraska, North Dakota, New Mexico, Belize, Mongolia, and Spain.

'Scientists' isn't good enough. Study design and funding is missing.
Posting this here because I’m not sure where else to ask: What is known of Alfheim - any descriptions of forests and sea in it? And fyi I think Snorri had too much Christian influence with the dark and light elves story, so am wondering if there are any older sources… pessimistic about that!
If not an impactor event, then what cleared away the miles high ice sheets from the North American landmass in such a short period, and then explain how the Atlantic Gulf Stream stopped transporting warm waters to the Northern hemisphere at the same time? We have seen meteors crash into Earth in isolated parts of the world which causing huge damage, like Chelasybinsk in Russia a few years ago, and Tunguska back further, so its not hard to imagine something crashing into a giant ice sheet and wreaking havoc globally. Evidence of impactors are all over the Earth, with thousands of others wiped away over time by erosion. It seems that archeologists just cannot accept facts like extraterrestrial impact events can cause planetary catastrophes, despite the evidence of Schumaker-Levy, Yucatan impactor, or modern day events, though significantly smaller scale like Tunguska or Chelasybinsk in more recent times. The archeologists answer seems to be they have no eyewitness account and that everyone who says otherwise is a racist, mysoginistic psuedoscientist. And that's a losing argument.

Interesting topic, but if there’s going to be this much shop talk, the show should be longer to leave time for actual findings and facts.

Science is about asking questions and seeking answers. It’s not about trying to disprove any possibilities. It’s never settled.
Absolutely false. The 1st step in ANY Hypothesis is to attempt to debunk your own hypothesis. Science isn't just asking questions, it's attempting to ANSWER the questions.

Best video so far about Lapita Origin and Migration(Pre Polynesia). The Umu(underground oven), double hull canoes carrying 100s of people, similarities in language, Chicken brought from Asia to the kumara brought from South America and Samoa spreading East to the rest of Polynesia. As a Tongan our origin is from Pulotu Northwest of Tonga which goes with the Lapita migration but before Pulotu there's Tou'ia o Futuna so as Vahanoa. Hopefully Tu'i Tonga expansion did not have a cause in that long pause 🤔🤭😅 Thank you for the video from a Tongan's perspective.
@@josemacbeth1641 Thanks, I’m really glad you liked it. Appreciate the insights as well. Mate ma’a Tonga!
In Ancient times Tongans didn’t call themselves as “Tongans” or “Kakai Tonga”. Thats what the neighbouring polynesian islands called them. another thing to point out is that if you ask the other polynesian islands (Aotearoa, cook islands, tokelau etc) where the origins of their people are they say “Hawaiki” , “Havaiki” or hawai’i. but if u ask the tongans where the origin of their people they say “Pulotu”.
@@jaup2191 True. Other Islanders it Tonga because it's the old Polynesian word for South and the Tongan capital is Tongatapu meaning Forbidden South. The rest of East Polynesia came from Samoa during AD era spreading all over. Tongan origin is during the BC era from Northwest of Tonga matching the Lapita migration.
and Austronesian languages used to be call 'Indo-Malay';, 70 percent of Indo-Malay comes from Sanskrit, Pali and other related India dialects..
The Tree is Great Mother!!! She is Matter! He is Consciousness! To say he hung on the tree means he was in trance or deep meditation. He was one with Her! This is the Sacred Marriage. Basic shamanism. Same as Jesus and the Cross ... also Great Mother. Every word, the number of syllables etc, it all has meaning .. forgotten.

Amazing but not surprising the Polynesians were descended from modern Southeast Asians/Malays, who were excellent navigators in their own right.
FACT: Tonga is the earliest known polynesian settlement. Oh boy, are the Samoans in for a surprise😂😂 “Cradle of Polynesia” MY ASS😂😂
Kefe who give a farrk about toga Elo
Tongans like you have this weird superiority complex so you go around telling off other Polynesians about your alleged supremacy. Our ancestors did not view themselves through the national boundaries we have today. Rulership was based on clan and personal lineage, not national boundaries in those days. If you weren't a direct royal family member in Tonga, you were treated like trash and worse off than anywhere else in Polynesia lmao. . Also nearly all other Polynesians reference Hawaiki as their homeland. Nobody says Tongatapu. Science is always changing and you can't find conclusive evidence in a climate like ours where record keeping in the physical sense wasn't the best. The rest of Polynesia will continue compiling our stories together and as usual scientists will gradually confirm what we already know ,while prideful and nationalistic tongans like yourself will keep telling the world you're important.
@@KNoeraiCry about it. Google “Largest empire in Oceania” and the only result is Tonga 😂 Google “Simon Fraser University Birth of Polynesia” and it’s an archeological/anthropological study on how Tongans created Polynesian culture 🤡

The Tui Tonga would have somewhat banned the eastward expansion at the time they were in power, and when the Tui Tonga fell to the Tui Manu’a, that gave the opening for eastward expansion of what was known as the Ma’oli of Mulufanua/Manano - who eventually became the Maohi of Havaiki, Maoli of Hawaii , Māori of Rarotonga, Aotearoa, and Rapa Nui.

I like the style of your videos, I think it's an interesting period of thinking in archeology and history that is more inclined to taking the religious/mythical mind seriously. You should talk to someone like Jonathan Pageau.
@@Alexander_Isen thanks!! I’d love to talk to Pageau I’ve watched a lot of his stuff, though I think I have a ways to go building an audience before I have the clout for that. But yeah I really want to push anthropology to grapple with the religious/mythical. Roy Rappaport blazed the brightest trail so far but there’s a lot more ground to cover.
@@TheTel You could always try just shooting your shot. I'm sure if you have an interesting angle (like insights into archaeology) he's willing to talk to you. I've seen him talk with plenty of 500 subs channels, although that might be because they sponsor him on Patreon
Nice Ghibli music, I think the theory of anthropomorphising nature being advantagous to survival is silly as it is in no way obvious how this would benefit rather than harm survival. You could easily take it in the opposite direction, the human that sees personal signs of danger everywhere in nature (every shadow and every rock is a potential enemy threat) is the human that is too scared to commit to action or take risks, thus starving him of his prey. I think a simpler explanation is that, as you said, humans view the world in a personal manner and there are many things in the world (including the world itself) that are analagous to mans body and being, man being a microcosm of the world. This obviously makes even more sense if you believe God is a person, as it is the final step in the chain of teleology.
I think your video is one of the best on Polynesia, as my mother is full Maori and I live in the UK it is so helpful for my understanding of my people.. Roy.
Thanks Roy, I’m really glad you think so!! Appreciate it.
Excellent work. Mālo le saíli ámakaga ò ẞămoa ma le aku Polegi. 🫡).
Possibly, or perhaps likely that previous settlers on Pacific islands would have been wiped out by a mega-tsunami, thus leaving a vacuum for refugees from Chinese Imperial expansion leaving in seacraft from the mainland. Odds are that another tsunami will eventually repeat the cycle. The evidence for this hypothesis is in huge boulders flung high above sea level on some Pacific islands.
This is so awesome!!! Some new information as well.
