I'm growing lilies and other flower bulbs since 1997 and herbaceous perennials since 2004. I have two MSc degrees, one in Horticulture (2007) and one as a Plant Doctor (2010), I also have a PhD in plant virology (2021). I'm currently researching plant pests and diseases.
On this channel I'll talk about plants, pest and diseases, pest managements and other plant related things. Please keep in mind that the things I say or recommend works for me under my growing conditions, in my soil/substrate under my irrigation regime, which means that it may not work for you. Please keep the comments civilized. The videos have subtitles, you can turn them on if you do not understand what I say. You can also auto-translate the subtitles in any of the languages UA-cam supports.

Mulching the onions, Madonna lilies - Lily collection part 13 [4K]
Переглядів 1712 годин тому
#lilium #gardening #flowers #allium #bulbs #flowerbulbs This year I decided to mulch the onions and the lily collection with straw. In order to have an effective mulch one needs to apply at least 5 cm (1 inches) of mulch when compacted. This will allow bulbous plants to grow through but will suppress seed borne weeds. However perennial weeds will still grow through the mulch! Please be aware, t...
Re-potting glory lilies (Gloriosa) and showing the cigar-like corms [4K]
Переглядів 616 годин тому
Gloriosa are tropical climbing perennials, which go dormant in autumn, or in the dry season. They need to be stored at about 17°C (62 F) and a little bit moist to avoid the damage and rotting of the sensitive corms, which do not have a protective tunic. Every part of the plant is toxic, so do not allow children or pets unsupervised near the plants.
Digging up my Caladium tubers and how to store them to avoid Erwinia rot [4K]
Переглядів 4День тому
Caladiums are tropical plants, they need frost free winters. I'm digging up my tuber from the pot, so I can overwinter it at a dry place, around 18°C ( 64 F). I do not clean the tubers until they are totally dormant and dry, because I'd like to avoid snotty stinking rot in my room. This rot is caused by the bacterium Erwinia carotovora, it's new name is Pectobacterium carotovorum.

Lily pests and disease vectors: aphids and leaf-hoppers (Empoasca sp.) [4K]

Aphids and leaf-hoppers (Empoasca sp.) can be present and cause damage to lilies throughout the growing season. Aphids are more prevalent on actively growing plants, but sometimes can re-appear in autumn. Both insects can have a wide variety of hosts, aphids mainly vector viruses, while leaf-hoppers usually vector phytoplasmas. Syrphid flies also known as hoverflies are useful pollinators, whil...
Lily seed inspection: candling lily seeds, identifying viable seeds [4K]
Переглядів 22Місяць тому
Candling seeds is an important step before you donate your seeds to the RHS Lily Group. By putting seeds over a light-box you can see the embryos, so you are sure that your seeds are all viable before donating or sowing them. Sometimes only 20-35 % of crosses contain embryos, so you can know before sowing seeds which crosses were successful. The RHS Lily Group's latest seed list is available he...

What parts does a lily plant have? [4K]
Those seed pods need to be harvested ,I have very few stems as green as yours and Ialso got some wood chips in as a mulch
You are absolutely right Brian! I'll do that in the long weekend, because according to the forecast next week we're having -1 to -4°C nighttime. Most of the stems are yellow or brown now, only late Aurelians, Trumpets and some OT are still green. Wood chips is a great mulch, but we do not have that much treese here, I live on the Great Plain, but we do have an abundance of wheat, corn and sunflower stems. I decided to use wheat, because it is the most common here, and also the cheapest. Agronomists do not make bales of corn or sunflower, they just usually breake them up and mix them into the soil.
Will storing them in a brown paper bag work?
Yes
Thank you informative as always .
Thank you!
Very informative thanks for the efforts
You're welcome!
Hello sir, I want to know if flamingos have like smell chocolate flavor?
Cosmos peucedanifolius 'Flamingo' has no fragrance.
All ways good to know who the Lily enemies are .
Yes, indeed. Most lily pests are not specific to lilies. Both aphids and leafhoppers have a wide range of host plants.
Great introduction Janos I joined in 2009 as its great to be a member of like minded people. I still look forward to my copy of Lilies and Related Plants arriving.
Me too!
Being a rather new member of the RHS Lily Group, it's fascinating to go through the lilies of the annual seed list. EU + UK = ❤
Being a more seasoned member I still find so many interesting things in the seed list and in the L&RP. We appreciate your membership!
Store the cannas in dry peat moss in a root cellar ,they survive very well !
That could be also good, thank you!
Can you give me the name of 3:04 please !!!!
'Amethyst Temple' strain, it is not in commerce. The strain was created at Oregon Bulb Farms from 'Pink Perfection' strain, but this one does not fade.
@@janosagoston123 A , OK, I understand . Thanks you very much for replying. I got Pink perfection lily , but them not like your at all . Amethyst Temple ' absolutely unique!!! 💯
I made crosses, and I will share my seed with lily groups. I can send you some in November if you like.
@@janosagoston123 Yay !!! That's very interesting, but I think it's will be expensive? Seeds-you mean bulbs.? Because from the Seeds in our climate will be very difficult to grow the flower 🌼
@@Андре-Сад-Англе I meant seeds. For me they flower in 2-3 years from seed. You have to keep the seedlings in the the first winter somewhere safe, not too cold, like in a basement or where you store potatoes. Between -5°C to +2°C, in the pot, moist. Sending bulbs is not possible. I also have seed sowing videos, it is really not that complicated.
Beautiful sunflowers, the video is very well shot, I like you and subscribe to your channel👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
I enjoyed watching them bloom. They were all beautiful ❤. Do you sell any of your extra bulbs?
No, not yet.
@janosagoston123 when you do have extra bulbs to sell, please make a video letting everyone know. I believe plants grow better when they are loved, and you definitely love your plants. 💐
@@TheBronzeGlow Thank you! Indeed plants somehow can sense human feelings. I'll try my best this autumn, because I do have some over-propagation in perennials and Mediterranean bulbs.
🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻❤❤❤❤
Lovely plants 👍 Gloriosa is so dependent on warm and sunny weather it would seem. Have tried 'Rotschildiana' here in SWE several times but without much success. And as you said, the growing point dies off easily and the corm can't replace it. So sensitive... 🫤
Yes, it is sensitive and the sellers usually sell the smallest size available. I had grown Gloriosa in a glasshouse, and the corms were as big as a salami. You have to keep the corms in pots, a bit moist and at 16-17°C in winter time and you can start them in early February if you have a sunny window. I started mine in late May, the Caladium and Curcuma works the same and they all need a lot of water and feeding during growth.
@@janosagoston123 Caring for the corms in winter is a tricky part. The growing points have often been affected by fungus for me. Either the corms were stored too hot or too cold, and maybe too moist. You need the right environment. 🤔
@@SamuelC-qq5vb Yes you do. I failed with it a couple of times. What I find is the best is to keep them in the original pot dry, but not in peat, because it sucks out of the moisture. I keep them in dry coir and only re-plant them when I start the new growing season.
I love all of your flowers 😊. Where did you find the lily that started off white, then turned pink? Can I have the name spelled out, I can't find it on the google search engine.
I do not remember all the cultivars, because I have 500+ cultivars plus seedlings in my garden. If you turn on the subtitles you will find the names there when I show the exact plant.
Its called 'Guapa'.
@janosagoston123 Wow, over 500+ cultivars. That is amazing. Thanks.

So sad to see the results of the bad weather on your lilies I feel your sadness.
Yes, I felt horrible filming it, but life is not all about just success, there are bad times too.

I love your Pistachio ,Excellent !!
I love it too, I love green, white and black flowers, and also other vivid colors. I also like lilies with long pedicels. Who am I kidding, I love all lilies!
it's Rialto, and sorry but most of your OT's do not look familiar
The colors fade quickly and the virus also makes them striped
What a splendid tour of your lilies Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Madeleine! We had another heat wave, so my lilies are very early this year.
I never saw a Fangio like yours
Maybe its not Fangio. I'm at the mercy of the sellers, but also because our high UV light, it fades to pink. This is why I'm keep banging on UV light, some cultivars, especially tetras do not fade (mostly).
The original Graffity was registered as asiatic but is really a Div 8
Okay, this can be the reason it did not set seed from the lady I got it from! Noted!
Thank you for an enlightening and educational video
I try my best.
Thanks for sharing. 👍 Isn't the flower of L. pardalinum ssp wigginsii supposed to be of orange-yellow colour? This plant is party red, like many of the other ssps of L. pardalinum.
Yes, it is supposed to be, but this seed lot was open pollinated and there are reddish and yellowish flowers from this batch. The yellow form already dropped the tepals when I got to take the video.
Lily Paradise 😊
I hope so
Superb display of lilies! 👍 You have a really nice collection of cultivars.
Thank you Samuel! I've been working on it day & night.
Very comprehensive and enlightening
I'm so pleased you enjoy my videos!
Thank you for your engaging video ,I feel vindicated ,pot lilies are not meant for the garden ,they are designed for greenhouse production
They look weird in their first year, these have been planted late. In my experience lily bulbs should be planted when almonds trees are in flower. The bulbs were also smaller than normal lilies.
Thanks for taking us to such a great place
Yes, you may see these plants some time in the UK, because this grower regularly sells his plants there.
Strawberry Event is a tetraploid ,probably Purple Heart not Trogon
Yes, I've planted the 2 cultivars close, Purple Heart and Trogon, and they already had shoots and Purple Heart emerged in the Trogon side of the label, but its all good now, probably next year the shoot will grow upwards not sideways.
Never did like Minos but congratulations on having it ,excellent video
Thank you!
I am always learning something new from your comments. thank you
I've learned most of these tips and tricks through experience. Like I accidentally got herbicide drifted to lilies and they died without making a bulb.
Things look good ,nice video
Thank you! I spend a lot of time weeding and spraying this year.
