In March 1996, Mahmoud Abdul Rauf (formerly Chris Jackson), an all-star guard for the Denver Nuggets & an African American Muslim convert, was suspended by the NBA for not standing for the national anthem. Until then, Abdul Rauf had earned national headlines only for his record-setting free-throw shooting game & overcoming Tourrette Syndrome. The sudden NBA suspension & the media interest that immediately followed sparked a national debate about race, politics, religion & freedom of speech with Abdul Rauf at center-stage. The media controversy pivoted on the question of what it means to be American and un-American, particularly for Muslims, and reveals how so many contemporary political anxieties about patriotism, racism, political correctness, freedom of speech & Islamophobia have histories deeper than 9/11 & the War on Terror.

Tracing his evolution from a media darling and icon of the American dream to an "un-American foreigner," this timely film documents the history of anti-Muslim racism and xenophobia through a simple, poignant story of one man's spiritual journey turned public trial.

Beautiful documentary. Somehow documentaries from the 90s always have a special place in my heart. #90sBaby
Thank you, infinitely.
Americans are the First Nations, not Europeans, Asians, or Africans, etc.
Allah swt comes before non-profit corporations called US states and a Federal non-profit organization based in Washington, DC.
The change is called growth!
Dude is proof that nothing good comes from Islam
Kyrie Irving just went through this.
The nba has some of the best talent on the court while having some of the worst cowards. Imagine every player in the league supported Abdul and stop playing. Never walked on the court. This would’ve been demolished. All the issues would’ve been silenced fast.
The elderly woman who said, I don’t think they should be playing the national anthem at Any sports game. I respect that. She’s 100% right. Abdul rauf is definitely one of my favorite players.
❤ this great black leader who took a stand for what he believed and payed a piece for It and was kicked out of the NBA as a basketball player! Dr.tyrone of Chester PA
I'm still waiting for any sporting event(s) in America to have their anthem singer sing versus 2 and/or 3 of that racist song. If you're one of those others who haven't heard/read the words, Google it. Stop the hypocrisy. It has more to with being Black in America than being Muslim in this land.
Handsome man
Dude stuck up for his beliefs and there may not have understood Islam or wanted to at that time , but they can’t deny every era had a powerful Muslim that said “no that’s not alright with me” and I think that is beautiful. Even if you’re a Christian or whoever if there’s something that doesn’t sit well with you and you’re not causing chaos or encouraging violence then what’s so wrong with speaking your mind your side or even telling the media or your company that you work for hey I’m human I come with my own rules and regulations that I would like you to respect in return. Unfortunately we know how that turns out. When you’re so close to opening everyone’s eyes to reality that would cause a social change they’ll clip you, paint you as a madman erase you why ? Cause you’re weak and was speaking lies ? Or they knew this guy is powerful and that message is coming from such a good place they had to extinguish that light. Time and time again when Islam shows its beauty and the non violent way it sweeps hearts they wanna make it seem extreme and radical and this person has gone loco. Thank Allah for the Muhammad Ali’s the Malcom xs abduraouf cappernick. F this job I got a message I need to put out
He is now a shia revert
Inspiring, 1000% respect for this man. Thanks for the upload!
🏀"Elegant & Praise worthy, most merciful, and most Kind."🏀 God Given Ability & Hard work. Thank you for the video. This!! was my favorite player as a kid. Wes,

Muhammad Ali, Abdul jabbar, Mahmoud Abdul Rauf, Olajuwon. Muslim athletes have always succeeded. alhamduliah.
And the home of the brave- good job Mahmoud 🙏
Alhamduliah. Stand up for justice.
We black’s continue to fight, die and be demonized as we challenge America to honor the Constitution that all men are created equal and because of this it made it possible for immigrants to enter our land as refugees only for them to immediately adopt white supremacy idiopathic ideology because of their own racism and oppression they’ve dealt to Africans in the same land they fled.
Yeah! Stand and be proud that your country ignores your systemic problems and this goes for you too white women ! We don’t care to hear about Joye sexual harassment on the job that pays you. You should be grateful you’re being paid by that company. Shut up and work. This is America!
I grew up during the MLK era I remember riding the bus with my mother having to stand or sit in the back of the bus even though there were empty seats in the front I remember going the the bus station seeing white and negro water fountains and bathrooms I recommend a white store owner shooting Oscar in the back killing him and nothing happened I remember my mother not being able to vote I remember when desegregation started in my school (1964) I remember the Vietnam War where black soldiers were fighting for someone else freedom when blacks were not free in this country so when the star spangle bander was written blacks were slaves and had no freedom, our black men were killed our black women were raped and our black kids were taken away from their parents so someone tell me why any black man should stand for something that stands for oppression of the black race,I stopped standing and until this day I wont stand, the 13 original colonies and the 50 states were not meant for blacks and the constitution still only recognize blacks as 60% of a citizen now this is how our government see us until this day this was a decision handed down by the Supreme Court and Dred Scott but because our white government give blacks a few preks no black leaders speak of this...Dr King dreams aren't forfilled yet
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾A great story, what a Human being🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭💝💝💝
A piece of shit amerikkkan flag...which has never been a representation of the freedom(s) for those of African descent throughout the world, as a matter of fact, it represents quite the opposite. The same flag that came upon the Natives here as the anglo-saxons ran roughshod throughout their land, wiping them from the face of the earth...literally and figuratively. The same symbol that stood over every " Reservation " and " Plantation ", the very thing which represents mass murder. Don't get me started on those Arabs, too, and Christians, in their pillaging and rape of the African 🌍 continent...in the name of " GOD "....lest we remember!!! The same flag that has dropped nuclear weapons upon a people. The same flag worn on the shoulders of every officer 👮 as they have continuously killed citizens of African descent, most unarmed, I might add...in the name of God and duty. If you think about it, it even looks strange(comical) for someone to stand, pledging allegiance to a flag, a flag, that is the very symbol of their oppression. I know them anglo-saxons laugh at Black people as such fools!!!
"Until the lions have their historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunter." - African proverb
He could of stood up.
This man ate, slept, and breathed basketball.

Remind Me of derrick rose story outside of the religious persecution etc. Derrick rose was silently defiant and strong so they had to tear him down
The Clown white boy at 3:03, says there are rules to the game and he has to follow by the rules. Wtf 🤬 Show me in the rule books of the NBA that says you have to stand and face that oppressive hateful racist amerikkkan flag I’ll wait 🤷🏽♂️…… That’s what I thought So STFU 🤫
I respect Mahmoun Abduk Rauf. America always trying to change people to be house nigga.
No father and then the rest.........

Asking kids about this is tasteless
I got in trouble in the fifth grade by my white cowboy boot 10-gallon hat wearing from Texas teacher for not standing for the Pledge of Allegiance.
I know you're not supposed to idolize anyone or anything but God so in that sense there is no pictorials or depictions or drawings of the American flag in any of the Bible or Koran so I think he was right and Justified by not praising that evil flag which is a Sigil.
That flag is an idol! Foreign Muslins do not have the same experience. They are seeking white supremacy approval.
This Brother was my first introduction to Islam. I hated him. All these years later, especially as I prepare to become Muslim, I love him fully.
The prank the radio station pulled would've never happened in a N.O.I. Mosque!!!!!!
What an amazing player he was and sad how he got black balled from the NBA.
