It was a beautiful day out so I went out and photographed a small handful of French Colonial buildings around Hanoi. Honestly I could make a whole youtube channel just to French Colonials in Vietnam, this is less than 1% of the buildings in Hanoi, let alone all of North Vietnam. thorium radioactivity coating gives that unique look.

      The non radioactive versions have the same aesthetic. The thorium just makes it cheaper to produce. Also it's not a coating, its baked into the glass itself.

    thanks for the review. what length should i get for the helicoid adaptor? i'm not very familiar with this. if the takumar is 28mm, does that mean i need to get one that 28mm is in between of, eg a 25-55mm helicoid?

    • @allanbinder8218
      @allanbinder8218 2 місяці тому

      helicoids are variable length, as long as it fits on your mount and your lens thats all that matters, the whole point is that they adapt the focal length to account for the mirror/larger housing, but that also means you can move it further than that to get fake "zoom"

    I love the chapter headings 😅. Great images, I'm about to scoop one of these up along with a Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm prime for the delicious soap bubbles. I have my Sigma Art series lenses when I want technical perfection. I have these plus my Vivitar Series 1 135mm f/2.8 - another soapy AF lens - along with my Lensbaby optics when I want to have fun. The VS1 zooms in general are a lot of fun, by the way. You said you're poor, so if you're looking for fast aperture zoom lenses, that's the way to go for lenses under $50 AND they're also sharp AF when you want them to be, and smooth as butter in the backgrounds even stopped all the way down to f/11 if you zoom in.

    I bought this lens about 10 years ago at a flea market and never actually used it. It's in mint condition in a leather puch. Now that I'm getting back into photography, I'm very happy to have discovered this video. What camera did you use it with btw? I'm going to buy a Sony a6400, do you think they pair well? Thanks a lot for this amazing video!

      All of the photos in this video are from a sony a6400. I personally love the combination, but vintage lens snobs will tell you that you need a full frame. My advice is to get a helicoid adapter and not a focal reducer (or get both). The Helicoid adapter + vintage lenses is really a great experience and you can get some great shots with it.

    One of my all time favorite lenses. So much so that I have every m42 version from the first minuscule f4 ( the very first wide angle SLR lens out of Japan) gem to and including the first bayonet version. Love them all, but the one you have is my favorite. I use them for different focal length needs on Full Frame, APS-C & Micro 4/3 (P.S. - I collect M42 Takumars, for good reason) 😎

    That lens caught me off guard. I got my first one long ago and had been brainwashed about screwmount and small apertures being old and technically inferior. Then I bought a Spotmatic to “play”. The camera had excellent ergonomics and let me concentrate on what I wanted from an image I was framing. The negatives it was producing were astonishing and I could buy M42 lenses for £20 to £25, all day long. People were ignoring them. It was a game changer. These orphaned cameras and lenses were top drawer hardware. The 35mm f3.5 is such a soulful optic. Your shots are testament to why greatness is baked into such zen designs. They come into their own when you put them with modern digital capture and post-processing.

    I don’t understand which lens this video is about. At the very beginning you say it’s your review on your S-M-C Takumar which would mean super-multi-coated. But the video title is Super Takumar, a different lens version which isn’t multi coated. I have the Super Multi Coated version and I like it, very small. I’ve heard over and over that the F2, Auto Takumar is the best of the best 35mm Takumar.

    the comment you made about "dramatic lines an artistic architecture" is unfortunately, not true at all. I don't know who tell you that but those "artistic" extensions you see are simply... extensions made from cheap materials that happen to look colorful. I have a relative who used to live in one of these apartments, they are ussually blue collar workers who could not afford a better place, hence the extension.

    • @allanbinder8218

      The book I referenced in the description is a history of Soviet architecture in Vietnam. After the french left there were very few architects left in Hanoi that weren't part of the war effort, the Soviets brought architects to Hanoi to fill in the gap, after 5-10 years they were able to train new Vietnamese architects who were more influenced by local design aesthetics and less restricted on preplanned soviet designs. The early Soviet block houses are basically flat walls with right angles, then once the Vietnamese architects were trained you see more dramatic designs.

    I basically used my Super Multi Coated Takumar almost exclusively on my Pentax K-10, K-20, and K-5. I have been trying to give it more time on my K-1 lately, but I can never decide if I want to take it or my 8 element. I have a lot of Takumars that are really special for different purposes. I've got all of my photos sorted by lens on flickr. I do tend to underexpose most of my Takumar shooting. I really hate blown highlights.
