Cylinder Record Test Pressing from an unidentified Edison Mold - v2
This is record I made from an original Edison cylinder record mold. There are no markings on the mold so the only way to find out what the recording is...is to make a record and play it.
2 minute selection containing two separate (unconnected) tracks. If anyone has any thoughts what the possible purpose or original of the record is please leave a comment.
Some thoughts that have been shared...could it be master for doll cylinder records? or someone high-up in the company wanted a record of their child?
Sounds professionally recorded (not home recording) and plating/mold making would have been done at the Edison factory...so someone had to have had access to not only the recording studio but the plating department as well.
Apologies for the traffic noise towards the end of the recording...its NOT on the cylinder. :-)

QUICK AND DIRTY CASTING OF A CYLINDER RECORD "TEST PRESSING"
Переглядів 1752 роки тому
Have an original (period) cylinder record mold in my possession. No clue what is on it....made a quick fixture to be able to mold a record to play....printed the fixture parts on my 3d printer and apparently didn't have the core 100% centered...I'll fix that on version 2...but this is still a playable copy. Some surface noise as the mold has some oxidation.
My Distortion Box from 1982

Designed and built my own distortion pedal back in '82 or so and put it in an old Roland Bee Baa case. Pulled it out of storage after 35 years, popped in a new battery and surprised it still works!

Toy Phonograph Tiny records really play, although you really have to listen closely to figure out what the tune is. But what do you expect from a 1/4" or so diaphragm.
Edison Diamond Disc MOTHER
Переглядів 1645 років тому
My "find" from the Wayne, NJ phonograph show today. An Edison Diamond Disc "MOTHER". This is the postitive from which the stampers would have been made. In the video I mistakenly referred to this a "daughter", but the correct term is "MOTHER". The disc is dirty, scratched and dinged but plays surprisingly well given the visual condition. Not a peppy selection by any stretch of the imagination, ...

how did you make that record?
I want it :D
Huh. I’ve never seen a blue 2 minute cylinder
Hello, do you have this record, and would you like to sell it? Thanks in advance. Matej from Croatia.
Damn this little thing is so cool
This version predates the Sammy Timberg cartoon jingle.
Hello fillmour1 can i buy a copy from you please 👍🍻
ਲੁਲ LUL
Why is it so distorted and crunchy? And why is it playing backwards?
Well it won't win any awards for high fidelity, but yeah I guess it works.
Restoration- Edison Fireside Phonograph (1911) plays again. ua-cam.com/video/W1CHMPbnW1g/v-deo.htmlsi=08oIU4gl90CuuzLl.
Nice! Now play it on an acoustic phonograph with tin sewing needles.

Popeye is first appeareance in animation in 1933
Dubbed from a May 8, 1931 "alternate take" by the Varsity Eight (Ed Kirkeby's "Califronia Ramblers")- originally recorded for ARC's Banner, Perfect and Oriole labels.
This is the Perfect 15473 version
What a collection Man! Congratulations you have an authentics Jewels. This is pure gold. Have a nice day. 👍
Cool. My brother bought one some years ago. I met Jack, a nephew of the Babson Bros., when bidding on a sax and he later visted Colorado Springs. I became quite fond of my distant cousin and Jack told a few stories of his Uncles. Jack gave me the 1997 genealogy edition. He passed in his 90s and I'd need to see again where our families' cousin relationship was. For years I'd known Edison used the Chicago Babson Bros. services. Jack wanted to save many of the recordings for prosperity and worked towards doing so before his death.
And it's a Blue Amberol record!
Oh, I see from the comments that it is likely not from the Edison company, so it wouldn't be using their trademarked Blue Amberol composition, even if it is blue in color.
So clear
This is a great song and great record player Glad we can still get cylinders for them
I bet this song is on 78 disc format too.
Billy Murray might be back in vogue, considering 60+ years of people listening to wretched rock... Years ago older collectors, in talking about a garage full of old records, referred to about 50% of Billy Murray's, maybe 25% of decent Jazz records. By Billy Murray's they meant everything old pre-jazz, that they considered a waste of space and not worth listening to, and believe me, that included a lot of Paul Whiteman's and other bands of the early twenties. Paul Kearney, rest his soul, would only refer to Whiteman as the fat POS. Probably because of him making great jazz players play strictly from arrangements..borrring. Well, just don't play your damn fine condition early Jazz records on a victrola, but if you must, change the needle every time and never, ever turn a needle. That's why you find old records that look like they were roller skating on. Poor people didn't buy new needles. Look at a needle, after one playing on a victrola, under an 8x loop. It looks like a little knife blade. Imagine turning that sideways on the grooves of a record... Don't.
Hi filmor1 I haven't seen any new cylinders for sale on ebay I'm just wondering can you make Battle Cry Of Freedom civil war song I just love the history thanks.Troupee
De aqui salio la idea de los discos compactos digitales!!!!!!!!
Cool gadget of the past as audio tech is still in golden age. Incredible invention for it's time.
Spinach does not give you powers, kids.
If you believe it does it might as well, old boxer John L. Sullivan used to rub rock salt and other stuff on his face and hands to get the fat off. Sure it mightve never done anything but it gave him confidence thinking he had some form of edge, making him fight differently.
Same with Tyson jogging at 4 am
i believe it does i kick ass when eat spinach
Wow! Are you selling these? I'd love a copy of Susianna- that one seems impossible to find!
And a 52K to boot!
Would love to hear a transfer of this!
How is it you follow the pages visit?
amazing acoustic recording. somehow made it decent fidelity on a wax cylynder from the 1800s
Yeah cause this is 1880s tech this was the amberola invented crocs 1910 and was the highest fidelity of acoustic recordings before the Edison diamond disc. This may have also been electrically made so there were many improvements
Definitely a home recording. No other reason for it to exist. Same person, reciting things that kids were made to memorize back in that era.
Hi filmour1 I think it's definitely not a home recording it's so perfect and no noise it was professionally made maybe the father worked there and got he's Child's voice recorded on to wax cylinder great find you did a great job in making a copy Troupee. 👍🎷👍
Where do you source this information from that those are reproductions???? Is it because it doesn't have the paper label on the back?
I made the copy that is playing. thanks, Rob
The first record of the "Greatest of the Red Hot Mamas"!
WOW !
WHAT A SOUND !
Why the heck would there be a victrola type of machine which was invented in 1906 to play an already outdated medium?
Very funny!! Another great cylinder.
Sound fantastic. A great cylinder and Artist.
Do you still make custom cylinders, would you be interested in a commission? Got a rendition of brother can you spare a dime and would like to give it as a birthday gift to a friend I’m seeing in December
I can't see your link in the ebay description. can you send me the title of the numbers?
Wish there was a similar means for reproducing 78s.
There is (it’s just more expensive)
interesting varint on the theme .:) :) :) :)
You're supposed to close the lid while it's playing to reduce the sound of the record scratching
Surface noise.
True, but this is a video and we kind of want to see it go.
I'd love to hear a direct transfer
It's always exciting to discover that someone has produced a new diamond disk. Very cool.
What label was the original on? (I've heard the Crumb cover of this song, but not this version)...
I'd be interested in paying for the schematic or even a kit to do this mod!
