Welcome! We are Michelle and Blaze. We travel all over North America in our 2021 Ford Transit camper van that my dad and I built together. We're in search of adventures, stunning landscapes, and peaceful sunsets. Come along with us!
The unedited truth of why I chose to live in a van.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about the chain of events that occurred for this experiment to exist. So, I thought I'd share my van life story with you.
2015/2016: I first learned of tiny house living and minimalism. I was intrigued, immediately.
Sadly while trying to start a family, I experienced infertility and heartbreak. Eventually, I chose not to subject my body to the heavy doses of meds required to (possibly) get pregnant. After much consideration and emotional and mental turmoil, I chose to live child-free instead - the absolute hardest decision of my life.
2016: I started hiking 🥾 a lot, a lot, a lot. It helped me process and heal from infertility. It also helped me weigh if I wanted to file for divorce.
2017: I became a yoga 🧘♀️ teacher. This also helped me process and heal from infertility and opened my eyes to the direction I wanted my life to go in.
I started my second level of yoga teacher training also called a 500 hour certification.
In the fall, I separated from my now ex-husband and we sold our house.
I traveled out west for the first time with a friend. We went to Arches, Zion, and Bryce Canyon National Parks. I was like a kid in a candy store - oooing and ahhhhing over all the different rock formations. And we hiked Angel's Landing in Zion - one of the most dangerous hiking trails in the U.S.
I started researching backpacking and taking REI classes. I purchased all of the gear needed.
I first heard of van life and I was very curious 🧐
2018: I was officially divorced 👊
I went on my first backpacking trip (solo) for my 41st birthday. It was exhilarating and exhausting!
I transitioned from working full-time to freelancing and teaching yoga part-time. I loved the freedom to make my schedule!
We headed out west again to backpack the Grand Canyon NP. It was freakin’ AMAZING 🤩 The dark sky is worth the effort of hiking a 5,000 ft elevation change in both directions.
2019: I started going on solo car camping trips, like Spruce Knob WV, or Watkins Glen NY. I loved the solitude and the freedom.
2020: Covid hit and my boyfriend at the time and I went on countless car camping trips to escape the confines of my apartment. It fulfilled our need to spend time in nature.
I bought my Airstream Basecamp that fall. My dad and I did some minor upgrades like lithium batteries. I took it for a few trips before…
2021: I published my first book in February and one month later I hit the road with my cat, Carmey. We were out west for 10 weeks. I immediately knew that I hated towing and loved the freedom to explore. The right experience, the wrong rig. Upon my return, I sold the #airstreambasecamp and I pondered what was next for me.
I bought a rooftop tent just before Xmas🎄
2022: I lost 😞 Carmey. I got Blaze 🐶
I sold the rooftop tent because I couldn’t get enough leverage to close it. And I couldn't carry what would eventually be a 55lb dog up the ladder.
2023: In July, Blaze and I drove to Bar Harbor, ME to explore Acadia NP. We camped a handful of nights on our way up. We stayed in hotels on our way down because it was HOT!
I knew I wanted to sell, donate, or toss everything and get a van. So, I did 🙌
We spent 8.5 months building it out and about a month moving in.
2024: We spent four months out west exploring the Dakota's, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. Now, we're wrapping up some upgrades and modifications, and I'm getting ready to hit the road full-time again.
This life is magical in its own twisted and unexpected ways.

Warm Comfort Food: Delicious Cornbread When Baking with the Omnia Oven | Van Life Cooking Hacks
Переглядів 31921 день тому
Sometimes, van life is about finding comfort in simple things. Today, I'm making cornbread in my new-to-me Omnia Oven to eat with homemade black bean soup. I bought the Omnia Oven for two reasons: 1) I wanted a second cooking option besides the stovetop. 2) It's super compact, which makes it a great addition to any small kitchen, especially for van lifers who opted for a propane-free build. Thi...
Epic boondocking location, and a surprise | Van Life in South Dakota

This free boondocking spot offers epic views of the South Dakota badlands. It's one of my favorite places to dry camp. The rugged beauty of Badlands National Park with its ever-shifting land of stone and light did not disappoint. The wind is constant. The rippled peaks and valleys are vast. The grassland views are endless. And the colorful rock formations are striking and unique. I felt like I ...

We were smitten with the location because of the stunning sunsets 🌅 Also, the double rainbow was magical!!! It appeared right before us while watching a storm roll through the area. Easing into van life.

Having traveled cross-country before while towing a travel trailer, I knew what I was getting myself into. However, I still wanted to ease into full-time van life. We left North Carolina on June 1, 2024. We traveled to Ohio (where I grew up) to visit with family and friends. It was a great way of easing into this new lifestyle. We spent just over a month in the states of Ohio and Michigan befor...

In last week’s video, I mentioned that my mom and I left my dad alone to finish the van build. Why? I had a $1,200 flight credit that I had to use before it expired. When we returned, Dad gave us a tour of everything he accomplished. He built a second upper cabinet, he attached the doors on both upper cabinets, he attached the faces on the drawers, and he installed trim to hide the gap between ...

Beautiful Story. You decided to take action and find your true way instead of being stuck in this modern world mold "Just Because" SO Brave. Your story resonates. Newly subscribed and Staying tuned. Thank you SO MUCH for Sharing. 👍✌
Thank you for watching and subscribing! I hope my story encourages others to find their own path. 🙏
Call your van the destiny, you were destined to live the van life! You're making me itch to get back in my 85 chevy g20 high top okenagen camper van, there's nothing quite like floating down the road headed towards who knows what adventure. Just so you know, you are beautiful, strong, and incredibly courageous. That you decided to leap into the abyss to learn who you are instead of pretending to live a life you weren't destined to live is incredible! You. Are incredible. One more thing, don't know if you've been to the PNW, I didn't hear you mention it, please do yourself a favor and come check it out, the wilderness out here is a world of its own, the trails are incredible, and pleant of good people to meet. Just sayin, if you have the time!😊
Thank you so much for the kind words, it means a lot! I have been to the PNW but not to hike and go on adventures. I might make it out there this summer, we shall see. Take care.
Hi Michelle, new subscriber here! Great content! What camera do you use? It looks so clear!
Thanks! I’m learning and improving my content with each video I publish. I have a Panasonic LUMIX GH5 that I’m still learning how to use. Are you familiar with it?
You’re amazing Michelle! Keep living your dreams❤❤❤
Thanks, Marsha! I hope you guys are doing well!
Good for you, I am so happy for you. It is so important for each of us to take the time and be honest with ourselves and to get to know who we "really" are. You are a beautiful example of that journey. Here's to more adventures and going deep within. I wish you all the best the world has to offer.
Thank you for the kind words! I couldn't agree more about taking the time to truly understand ourselves deep down. Wishing you the best as well!
Great video. Subscribed
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for subscribing.
Amazing story! Wow you have a thirst for adventure bravo for going after it! I’m from NC (Raleigh) and also avid outdoorsman. Been camping since age 11 or so through scouts and have always loved backpacking and camping. I’m 44 born and raised here - stationed in San Diego while in the navy. I’m just a musician playing in a band right now, but being that I don’t own any land or a house, - one of my next goals is to get a camper and travel around the US. Thanks for sharing your story. I have never been married btw… and while I love backpacking alone and doing most things alone, some companionship is definitely welcome whenever that happens if it does and if not. I’ll survive. Stay strong, be safe and happy travels!
Thanks for sharing your journey with me! It's awesome to hear how you're also embracing adventure. Wishing you safe travels ahead as well.
What a beautiful story! Thank you for sharing your journey. Truly inspiring.
Thanks, Amelia! It's been a wild ride!
Love watching all your adventures. ❤
Thanks, Wes! I love going on them!
Thanks Michelle, enjoyed your story and very brave of you to share, If you ever want an extra photographer on one of your trips I would love to document the Landscapes and Stary nights where there is no light pollution.
Thank you! I’m looking forward to getting back out there and sharing the beauty!
Fantastic scenery my friend, views are just epic! What a place!
It is pretty special, isn't it?
Michelle I am so jealous but even more proud your living your best life. I love your videos and photos you share, you really have a great eye for this Beautiful planet, Please never loose your passion for traveling this beautiful planet and keep sharing your journeys.Your the Best.
Thanks Larry! I'm so glad that I get to explore in my free time. I'll do my best to bring you guys along with as many pretty landscapes and hopefully one day night sky shots.
I have been to that exact spot many times.
It’s a beauty, isn’t it!
@@michellecawleyyoga it surely is. We backpack into the badlands near that location. Epic views. peaceful. Thank you for posting.
What means $9282 month for subtotal?
Hi there. Great question. I have a van build series where I share how much I've spent on the build at the end of each episode. You can find it here: ua-cam.com/video/B5V2z4G1kcE/v-deo.htmlsi=gv4sS4o8TOZkcFIJ. In the episode you're asking about, I added the water tank parts cost to the previous month four total of $9,282 to get a grand total so far of $9,671.
Fantastic.. Well done.
Thanks! It was a lot of work and well worth the effort!
We just found your channel. You sure are blessed with beautiful scenery there. Cant wait to see more of your travels. Rocket my ridgeback and i are gearing up to try permanent life on the road. We are your newest Aussie subscribers 🎉🇦🇺🙏🇦🇺🙏🇦🇺🙏🎉
Hey there. The landscape is beautiful here! Thanks for following all the way from Australia. Enjoy your travels!
Thanks for the video. Shoutout from ohio. Be safe
Aw, thanks! I miss sledding and making snowmen.
You're a solo female, right? So what's up without all the "we"? Yes, your dog moved into the van WITH you. Other than that, you did all the rest. But you know that, right? Or is the dog your imaginary friend and picks up a hammer now and then and partakes on full-on discussions with you? Somehow, I wouldn't be surprised if you said, of course.
Yes, I am a solo female who lives in a van with a dog. Are you a dog mom? Do you realize how much gear they have? She has leashes, harnesses, a backpack, a life jacket, toys, food, coats, medicines, treats, and more. We moved in.
great michelle . love from india
Stay strong! Any progress is still progress
Thanks and so true!
❤ from THE ROAD TRIP
Thanks for sharing your ideas and what you learned. Did you put in your final flooring before you put your cabinets in?
Sure thing! The floor was the very first thing we installed. Less work that way, especially if the layout changes later on. I know some do the floor once the cabinets are in.
Great job. Glad you are getting back into van life. Stay safe.
Thanks for the well wishes!
Great job Michelle and Rick!
Thanks, Wes! It’s been challenging and rewarding to see it all come together.
If you organize a meetup at the RTR, you'll have a pool of folks to hang out with there, and probable cross paths with throughout the year.
That’s a great idea. What does RTR stand for?
@@michellecawleyyoga The short answer is Rubber Tramp Rendezvous, but that's rather meaningless right? So to answer your question I googled "history of the rubber tramp rendezvous" (except I misspelled that last word :) and got a good summary. It's all one long sentence: "The Rubber Tramp Rendezvous (RTR) is a yearly gathering of nomads, primarily van dwellers, founded by Bob Wells, who is considered a prominent figure in the van life community, as a way to create a sense of community and provide a resource for people living a mobile lifestyle; the event is typically held in Quartzsite, Arizona, and features workshops on topics like solar power, vehicle maintenance, and safety for nomads of all experience levels." The HOWA website has details. HOWA is Homes on Wheels Alliance. The RTR has a few days for women followed by a week for everyone, and it's free.
What’s the wire too small Michelle? Or was the connection just bad?
The DC-DC was the only component where we didn't use marine-grade wire and we hammered the lugs ourselves. So, I think it was a combination of both of those things. Also, I would use the charger while sitting idle to heat up my hot water heater. We're thinking that maybe sitting idle and the heavy load from the AC hot water heater had something to do with it as well. The replacement has been working great so far and I no longer use it while sitting idle. Hopefully, that helps it last longer than the previous one we installed.
@@michellecawleyyoga when you say hammered, does that mean you use a hammer? Did you use a crimp tool or a hammer because that could be why also if you use a hammer?🤔
We used a crimp tool like this one www.northerntool.com/products/lincoln-electric-lug-cable-crimping-tool-model-kh538-99214?cm_mmc=Google-LIA&Google_LIA&Welding%20%3E%20Welding%20Tools%20%2B%20Clamps%20%3E%20Welding%20Hand%20Tools&Lincoln%20Electric&ogmap=SHP%7CLIA%7CGOOG%7CSTND%7Cm%7CSITEWIDE%7C%7C%7C%7C%7C21698875163%7C&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADpPfbMAYssfvpeL_Din_jZMNi3kT&gclid=Cj0KCQjwgrO4BhC2ARIsAKQ7zUmegqhy0-6jAo0qHPgzX1PhhM6Jba7HNxOTy-GOiYp_jZr6-xGHVysaAnbiEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds. The second time around I bought and used a hydraulic one.
MICHELLE, I like the way you do your videos…. I have a very similar van that I am building on my channel also… I have a 2022 Ford transit high roof extended My videos are being posted now from February. My van is a lot farther along than it shows on my channel, but it’s still not complete. I’m still working on it. I just found your channel and subscribed …. 👍😎 good to see you
Hi Bryan. Thanks for subscribing! Mine is further along as well. We're actually in the process of doing some phase 2 upgrades and additions. I see you did bump outs. How do you like them so far?
@@michellecawleyyoga mine worked out really good….. I just figured out how wide my bed was going to be, and then made them as tall as the framing would allow to give me the most room for my head in my feet……. And then I put the bottom of the bed right on the framing of the bump out.🤔 I think that part was van build-22-
sounds like 3 excellent reasons to be back at your home base! Prayers for all of those impacted by the hurricane.
Yes! Thank you! 🙏
Why not use a gasoline heater? Velit makes a reasonably priced one.
That's a good question. When I was researching, I looked into the Webasto gas heater. The costs turned me away (currently, it's around $1,550). I want to say that I knew about the Velit heater and that it was more than half the cost of a Webasto gas heater (currently, it's around $700). I paid $157 for this heater a.co/d/1J6EHYb. I chose this one because it was affordable and it fit within my budget. It's been working great so far!
I’m living the dream, traveling with my dog across the country from NC. Enjoy every minute especially some of the accomplishments along the way. We hike and site see mostly in national parks and forests. Boondocking sometimes. Currently in Arizona 😊
Nice! I hope you’re enjoying the life! It’s quite the adventure, right?!? We’re returning to my home base to make some mods to the setup and pare down contents before I head out again. Safe travels! Maybe we’ll see you out there!
@@michellecawleyyoga yes it is! Research areas to hike and see somedays and other days just go with the flow!😊
Thanks for sharing. Great van build... its looking great. Wish you had more video of the AC install. We are doing a Van build too. Hoping to post the finish video soon. We look forward to seeing your progress. welcome to #vanlife
Oh nice on the van build. I hope it’s going well! What are you guys currently working on? Yeah, it went so fast once they were ready to lift it up onto the roof. It was also very stressful. I was more worried about their safety than anything. It was pretty easy though once it was in place. We applied Dicor sealant before they tightened it down with the hardware that came with the unit. We ran the wires down to the electrical system. Pretty easy.
@@michellecawleyyoga We are working on a 2003 Ford Econoline 250. I've posted some shorts on our channel. We were able to fit a full bath w/shower, full size bed, and kitchen.
@@WeOnAMission nice! I’ll check it out. Those vans are super popular for van builds. I hope it’s going well.

Its too late now but next year you should drive up to Alaska if you haven't been here yet. Recommend Skagway, Haines and Juneau.

Funny, that’s the plan! Thanks for the suggestions.
Hello. I am looking for a van tour video....is that in the works? Looks like you did a lot of hard work!
Hi 👋 Not yet but one is coming soon. The closest tour is this short ua-cam.com/users/shortsCD4yXFITNxo?si=EobLQnsYyfM-4FBU.
Thank you for sharing your van build and clearly explaining everything. Very nice. Hope you enjoy your journey!
Thanks and of course! Happy to offer any helpful insights I learned along the way. It’s quite a journey and well worth the effort. Thank you 😉
It's going to be ok! If you are in the desert, keep walking 🙂 The struggles you describe are real, however, I'd like to remind you that people living in houses will have issues like heating, plumbing, or electrical problems. But while most people have to rely on paying someone to fix it, you can fix it yourself! You will find your tribe. Making this video might just lead to some of the other tribe members, but van life groups on social media, events, and meetups will also help you find like-minded people. I am not sure what you do for a living, but may I suggest you turn up the hours you spend making money for a while. It will counter the need for funds to upgrade your solar array and travel budget, and while it will bring down the number of hours you are bored (it might even add some human interaction), do it now while you have the time, cause once you find your tribe you won't have as much time, and you will probably need the money 🙂 I hope this helps you take new steps in the direction of your dream life.
Thank you for the encouragement! I too believe my tribe will find me and everything will fall into place as it should. I plan on teaching yoga over the winter to earn some additional income, which will help. Do you teach yoga?
@@michellecawleyyoga it sounds like a great plan, and no I will leave teaching yoga to you☀
Alone is ok for a month or two for me ...but after that I start to get a little bit crazy..
I hear ya! I’ve been able to break up the solitude by visiting friends and family, which has helped.
Wow, and yeah the gifts do interest me and I am going to give it a try. Btw I'm sure you heard of Bob Wells and all the get togethers he has down in Quartzsite Arizona. I've never been but it's something I am gonna try sometime, maybe you should consider. It will be good to be around like minded people for a bit. I think after awhile you'll get into a routine and a groove and will be all good.😉🦅
Yes, I’ve heard of both. I hope to attend an event or two next year. The gifts are amazing and worth the effort!
Yes to this. I travel part-time in a built-out minivan and I've been to the RTR every year since I started. It's a good place to mingle and start meeting people. HOWA has also organized several caravans where a nomad can travel with the same group of people, I think usually 15 or so, for as long or as short as they like. There's all kinds of sub-cultures in nomad life -- minivan people, yoga people I guess, dog people, motorcycle people, women-only, 12-step people, UA-camr subscribers, people of color, etc. etc. -- anything people connect over. So I am building pieces of my own unique community over time and it's always affirming to regroup and see everyone again at the RTR.
🌍🧭🚐 have a nice trip from Mongolia
Ouch. You paid a guy $100.00 to change the lug. Nah. Buy the tool and a lug.
I know, right? I was hoping it would be an easy fix but it wasn’t. I ended up buying all of the tools and replacing the unit, the wire, and of course the lugs. It felt so good to it myself 💪
I see you must be an adventure, because you are well equipped.
Yes, lots of hiking adventures. They're good for the soul!
You listening to you is hard, because of the wind, but I got the idea of what you are saying 😉, because of the break from the wind at times.... So is this going to be your new life? You have a beautiful big van😂 make you 🙏🏿 look little when at the back of it.... So do you travel like at one coast or you enjoy traveling all over, because I been watching van life videos and some stay on the west coast, because of the weather they enjoy the warmth.
The wind was horrible that day - lesson learned to not record outside on windy days. That's with a mic too. I like to travel all over. Beautiful views and landscapes are my favorite.
Really helpful video - love how you're so transparent about costs and mistakes! Excited to see more, got yourself a new sub :D
Thanks for subscribing! The entire build was a learning process and I gained so many new skills.
Hey hi, I'm about to head off into Vanlife myself soon and just found your channel, I was thinking how lucky I am to be able to get by with just a Bluetti and 200 watts of solar for now I guess, from what I could see it's making my life sooooo much easier. new subbie here.🦅
Hi! Congrats, I'm excited for your upcoming van life adventures! 🙌 I went with an all electric build and I'm testing its limitations. My plan is to add more solar on the roof and to get some ground deployed solar panels to help replenish my batteries. I've certainly seen the Bluetti setup in other groups but never investigated it. I hope it works well for you! Safe travels!!! And thanks for subscribing ❤️
@@michellecawleyyoga Thanks, I'll be heading out of the northeast heading to the southwest (never been) in a few months probably, looking foward to checking out your next vid. maybe pick up a few pointers.🚐🦅
Ur not figuring wieght to ratio of ea matl location in van
Ah but we did. My entire layout changed because of weight distribution.
@@michellecawleyyogaHow? Most of the weight is on the driver’s side.
bonjour- total breathtaking - peace out. 🤘
Nice just wish I could ride with ya
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem with their DC to DC charger?
Hi Michelle! I am in the process of doing a conversion on my 2021 Chevy Express 2500 and I bought the Renogy 50a MPPT / DC-DC charge controller. I've got everything hooked up EXCEPT the DC-DC wire. I ran a 4ga wire from front to back, it has the terminals and heat shrink tubing, but I just haven't gotten around to making the final connections. I guess I'm just making sure everything else is working properly before doing this. I did buy a 60a circuit breaker to install between the van battery and the MPPT. Awesome job by the way! Stay safe!
Hi there! Oh you did a combo of the MPPT and DC-DC. I hope it works well for you. We did separate MPPT (Victron) and DC-DC (Renogy). We installed the unit back in November but didn't really start using it until I started traveling full-time. I've only been on the road for 2.5 months and I use the DC-DC all of the time (when it's working). I'm going to upgrade to the new Victron XS 50 amp once I return to my home base. Good luck with the rest of your build!
