I also have a sister that is 3 years older. I never really looked up to her in the same way as you did to your sister, because we are so different. I am more the intelectual type, while she is practical, I am socially awkward, while she thrives in company, she is empathetical, while I am, well... not. We had our fights when we were young, but that stopped when I was around the age of twelve, because we realised that it was easy to give each other the space we needed, just because we were so different. Now that we are in our sixties, we still get in touch a lot, even spend vacations together, helped each other in difficult times and have learned to respect (and make good use of) each others talents.

You see... I think I should consider starting something like a blog or my own podcast in which I will be discussing topics which you guys first discuss with one another here, as they resonate with me so much! :D I almost feel guilty about writing all those long comments, but my permanent excuse that I use to explain myself to myself for doing that is that maybe this interaction helps you guys in any way, as it "feeds" the algorithm, which is hungry for interactions... Anyway - if that bothers you in any way - let me know and I will stop :D But this subject matter that you covered today - I think about it myself very often too! The whole "cancel culture" and how one dumb comment or statement can influence one's entire future... When I was a kid, I wanted to be an actor (like a lot of kids my age), lured by the glamorous lifestyle and those award galas they get to participate in... But - just like you said Olivier - I am kinda happy now I didn't go that way, because I would, at some point, inevitably slip out something stupid. And - I don't know what it looks like in the UK or in Spain - but here in Poland the "journalists" and interviewers who ask celebrities the most controversial, edgy and sometimes even intimate questions are the ones who get most attention - their reels and TikToks showing how they try to corner the interviewee get the most views. That honestly scares me. What scares me even more is that view that if you have your own set of beliefs and it is closer to one of the sides of this left-right split - you should not devote any time to even try to understand the other side, as any time spent listening to them is a time wasted for you but at the same time making them stronger... How can we even try to understand the complexity of the world if we limit ourselves to just the part of it, which we like and agree with?! But this "tribalism" is I think deeply rooted in us, humans - and I fell for it too. I have a friend who I studied with - she was one of the most helpful, kind and smart people I've met at the university. And - until we both graduated - those were the only things I knew about her - because I experienced them every day. We did not talk about politics, as it was a pretty distant and seemingly irrelevant topic - we discussed our projects, exams and grades, as those were the things close to our hearts at that time. After we finished the uni I saw she sometimes reposted some right-wing content on the social media and I somehow felt emotionally distanced towards her, despite the years we spent together, in the same classrooms. And realising that got me thinking it shouldn't be that way. Someone's political views mustn't make me deprecate my great past experiences with that person! And finally - the fear of being misunderstood that Olivier spoke about at the end - I can relate to this so strongly as well! The situation with a guy in the club - agh! I would totally feel this urge to chase him and explain myself in front of him. Probably wouldn't end up doing it, but I would think about this situation for the following week - that's for sure! :D But it's all probably because of this "everybody needs to like me" principle, which I am guilty of myself, without a doubt! Maybe you will do a podcast episode about it too? :D You can certainly count on my looong comment underneath it! Another great episode! I didn't think I could like your conversations with anybody as much as I like ones with César, but it seems I do! :D Laura was an amazing guest! Her English is great so it was really comforting hearing her say she used to feel insecure about it too. The story with the colleague Chris(t) was hilarious, I genuinely burst out laughing! I think such situations are a part of every language learner's journey. I, for one, have felt pretty confident with my English for some time already, but when I went to Cambridge last year and my first contact with a local was in a café, where I tried to order breakfast... The waitress' disgruntled face and a "What?" repeated several times made me really doubt my skills! Fortunately, a couple days later I met two American girls in a London pub and they were really surprised by the level of English of me and my friend that I was sitting there with (considering, obviously, for both of us English is a second language). We thanked them for a compliment but I also told them about what I experienced in Cambridge and they told us that in London they got asked to repeat what they were saying all the time too! That made me feel slightly better about myself, as it happened just once to me and I did not come to London from Chicago :D . The bottom line, I guess, is not to be discouraged easily... And maybe avoid grumpy waitresses in university cities :D

After listening to this episode - and especially that part at the end where you quoted this hateful, homophobic comment - I though I would leave a comment with my point of view. I learnt about César's Spanish podcast from a TikTok video by lyneaandjorge (if you somehow do not know them - definitely give them a try!). It was a video with Lynea's recommendations for podcasts which are helpful in learning Spanish - and 'Spanish for False Beginners' was one of them. I am not that much into podcasts, but when I listened to the first few episodes - I knew I wouldn't go past it. Your discussions in that Spanish podcast as well as in this one are always funny, engaging and one can easily feel you "vibe" with one another - as partners in conversation and in life alike (although I can understand much more in English, for sure :D). So - I guess what I wanted to say is that while there might be people out there who have problems with who you are on the Internet, there are also people who enjoy your podcasts even more for the very same reason. Although, I can clearly see how it might not be easy for a person "having a thin skin", like you said about yourself, Oliver :) btw... did you actually say "a thin skin" (25:00)? I always thought "skin" is an uncountable noun... Well - articles... I should probably accept the fact that for me, as a Pole, the hope of ever learning how to properly use articles in English is lost forever! :D

I found your father's accent easy to understand. No worries there. Your mother's (in the previous episode) was a bit more challenging, but nowhere near as difficult as how some of those Scottish snooker players talk 😅

Hi both! I have not listened to the podcast yet, but I feel like I need to write this comment right away! I got to know the podcast exists from today's newsletter from César and couldn't be more happy about it! I started listening to "Spanish for False Beginners" some time ago, but since my level of Spanish is really low, I need to be really focused and attentive while listening to it - sometimes I have to listen to some parts a couple of times or head back to the transcript. But I really enjoy you two talking with one another - this is really what made me stick to the podcast in the first place! And since my English is in much better shape than my Spanish I can now enjoy listening to your conversations without utlilising 100% of my brainpower doing it! And an opportunity to learn a bit more English is always an additional win too! Thank you and I wish you guys both a lot of persistence in all your creative endeavours! Greetings from Poland! :)

New series going well but I think the refusal to reveal your appearance will harm its prospects! Not least because it does lend itself to speculation on behalf of the listener as to your true identity. For example, Unfortunately as I’m reading the new Bret Easton Ellis’s book while listening to these episodes and as I’ve no physical evidence to go on, a weird symbiosis has occurred and I’ve started to imagine that you and the other worldly narrator of the this tale are one and the same ! I’m not completely insane, I know that’s not the case but I do feel that facing the camera would avoid this kind of speculation from others and generally widen the appeal of the show

I follow Cesar's podcast to improve my Spanish and this is how I arrived here. I too live in London, my English is quite good but there's always room for improvement, so I subscribed! All the best for this new endeavour ❤️

I did not continue studying French in high school because I was too embarrassed. My father encouraged me to study Latin because, for one, it would help with vocabulary in any romance language.
