We BROKE our Race Truck? | Post-Track 68RFE Inspection & Teardown!
Our 6.7L Cummins Race Truck had a bit of an issue at the track that required us to remove its 68RFE Competition transmission and give it a once over. Follow Carter, Travis, Tanner, and Matt as they dig into our 68RFE Competition Transmission and find out what exactly went wrong.
A bad speed sensor caused the transmission to go into limp mode when we launched the truck, which resulted in more than a few issues.
The good news is that none of the core components of the transmission failed. The bad news is that we did cook some of the clutches and steels.
We're going to drop in new clutches, fix our Race Truck's electrical issues, and get this transmission re-installed for some more testing out on the track!

I have a stock 68RFE 265k on and been towing 15k 4 days a week since new in 2017 and not a single problem

It was my understanding that the filter screen was meant to be cleaned after every vehicle if not multiple times on the same vehicle. This is to evaluate when all the debris is cleaned from the cooler system.
Hopefully my fluid don’t look like this at 5k on the new stage 2 68rfe 😅

Got a Mishimoto cooler on my 4th gen with a tier one stage 2 and AN lines trans will run at 134. Will see how hot Towing in the summer.

We're definitely going to do the Aisins! We just don't see them quite as often as the 68RFEs or the various 10-speeds, but they're definitely on our list.

The internet makes it seem like transmissions are something special to put together. If you can read and follow direction you can put one together. Obviously experience helps. Cleanliness is key

We certainly do. Every 68RFE we build gets tested on it.

We could, if there's enough interest. I don't think it would be that exciting of a video since there's not much to actually see, but it's something we can do.
Got a stage 2 running good so far. Once it needs a refresh I will be asking about a stage 3.
How many miles in ? I have a 47re on just 60k miles give or take so still brand new
@ coming up on 5k miles on the stage 2. Hopefully it will last for a long time.

What will the fix be to make sure coolant doesn't get into the transmission again.
In this case, the transmission cooler failed internally, and the only solution was to replace it entirely.

Thanks for the advice. My only temptation with a diesel is stuff like the the old idi or Old cummins. The pre electronic pawpaw tractor motors that are dead simple to work on.

We have my 68rfe in the shop on its 2nd rebuild in 800 miles. Totally updated rebuild from the manufacturer and cant figure why but leaning towards the computer? Who knows but this trans is pure junk. Had issues with all 3 of my rams. My 2013 only has 50k and on the 3rd. No towing at all. $6,900 to rebuild.
@midlifemike4916 It's more likely the valve body and/or pump. If your shop is just using an OEM valve body instead of a high-pressure/modified valve body, you're likely just having the same issues over and over. It might be too late at this point, but if you'd like to go a different route, give us a call at 602-399-5484, and we'd be happy to help you out.

Just curious. I hear you guys talking about pinning the overdrive in some of your 48s. If I just put my overdrive switch on all the time does that keep overdrive on? And if so does it hurt the trans at all? I’m running suncoast fmvb in the truck I’m curious about but looking to build a car next. I’m sold on your valve body for my next build for both the trans brake and pinned OD just curious if I can do that in my truck aswell?
We talked to SunCoast on this, and while it's not something they do on their standard 48RE manual valve bodies. They did say it's something they CAN do, but it does take more modification and it's something that has to be specifically requested. In short, the SunCoast valve body in your truck probably can't engage overdrive through all its gears as it stands now. Never. Ever. EVER. Use wheel bearing grease to assemble a transmission. I’ve seen a few “builders” on here just slathering it all over to assemble. Big no no to say the least.
Oh wow this is amazing to watch, I became a helper to a master tech at a ford dealership, main thing is transmission, I tear these things out and apart all the time , it’s definitely fun for me. But this new upgrade is definitely cool, I am not a car guy or have a lot of knowledge of the internals of engines and transmissions, got out of military and wanted to learn the trade. This upgrade of the 10r80 looks more fun to do. If this makes more money and offers more knowledge I would definitely want to sign up to work there.

U tell people not to use it but failed to tell them why. The why is because grease is extremely high temp stuff and very thick. It will not melt or mix in with the trans fluid. It will stay in large chunks and clog your lubrication system
