Tier One Tears Down "The Other Guy's" 48RE Transmission | Used Parts In a "New" Transmission?
One of our customers recently brought in a 48RE transmission that he had a local "other guy" put together, but then brought it to Tier One when he became suspicious of the craftsmanship.
Good thing he did, because this thing is a mess. Used parts, mismatched clutches, steels-on-steels, and bearing grease instead of assembly lube made this particular 48RE transmission a ticking time bomb.
Luckily, it was never installed, and we here at Tier One are going to get our customer fixed up.

The guy brought that trans to a previous guy who has made his own work in the past and said I need this fixed as cheap as you possibly can then didn’t trust it and took it somewhere else and now the customer is going to tell the world how bad of a build he did. I will say this one is pretty bad and I’d hope the previous builder didn’t charge much and he isn’t doing it for anybody else until he learns a lot. I haven’t saw a set of altos in a 47/48 for awhile now looks like he popped on eBay and bought the cheapest bare bones rebuild kit he could find.
You get what you pay for.

Do you install any Sonnax parts in the valvebody, like end plugs with o rings, or the heavy duty solenoid clips? Or just the Ratiotek kit?
@@machine7767 Every valve body gets the Ratiotek kit and solenoid clips. We thoroughly vacuum test the PR valve bore and TCC priority valve bore, if the plugs show a leakage they get swapped.

How different is this to the 10L80E from GM?
They're different enough to be annoying. Despite being derivatives of ZF's 10-speed, both Ford and GM made some changes that hoses you on interchangeability a bit. The major differences on the 10L80 versus the 10R80 are the idler gear and bearing (which causes whine and potential failures on the 10Ls), the pan, case, output shaft, and valve body. They do share the same clutches, CDF drum, outer shell, and a lot of the smaller internal components and seals. We're looking to get into the 10L80s here pretty soon, but the interchangeability issues have slowed us up a bit.

Our tear down benches are both a decent size. Are you wanting exact measurements on them?
@@tieronetransmissions just rough dimensions. I'm looking at buying a 30"x72" commercial stainless top to add to my workbench to use for my transmission rebuild. I'm wondering how large yours are compared to my plan since yours look to be a great size for the work you do.

These new general motors 3 liter duramax diesels getting 28 mpg are pretty tempting, the oil pump belt change is 200,000 miles. Putting them in half ton trucks and yukons and suv

So for the ram 10-12 guys with the stupid ac/transmission cooler, I see mishimoto has a cooler that can either bypass the stock one or go in front of it. Will that help anything. Thanks

My 08 blew the pump in the tranny at 130k $4500 to fix. Did a little valve body work got 185k now.
what level 68 would you recommend for 800-1000hp and 2000tq stealth 64/billet s480 set up? daily driver, but probably turned down to 500-600hp on the street
Our stage 3 may be your best bet but if you do intend on pushing it to that 1000 HP, our Comp unit may be the way to go.

@@tieronetransmissions just the 68 rfe cause it’s what I own! I am going to be young and retired, transmissions fascinate me and it would be a cool business idea because there’s no performance transmission builders where I live.
Maintenance is the KEY. I do partial flush every 20k-25K and a full flush 100K only with synthetic oil and trans additive. Maintain clean anti-freeze fluid that helps to keep engine and trans run cool. I never had any problem with my auto trans.
I have no reason to question your claim IF you’re using the truck as a daily driver, but if you’re putting the truck to work and pulling over 8K and as heavy as 17-20K once in a while, along with hills/mountains, I’d have to say that you’re lucky beyond measure or full of it…I’ve been doing everything above for years now. A manual transmission (G56) is the only thing to hold up outside of an Allison swap.
