    This all sounds so sweet, untill we look at the Catholic church and how they treated others for approx 1600 yrs. Murder, torture, stealing, decimating families. It is a cult of paganism, married to the Christian Ideas, words and phrases.

    Great to hear about your journey. In the end, for me, being a Catholic doesn't make ME 'good' or somehow 'perfect', or even better than say 'anybody else'. It's really about the Gospels. The Gospels really show how, even the best of us get things wrong. Getting things wrong doesn't necessarily make us 'Evil' (we still just may be!). No. The Gospels, e.g. The Sermon on the Mount, point us to the real good we, if we really try, can do. PS There is a lot more we can do!

    Catholic Catechism with Imprimatur has only 9 Commandments they eliminated the 2nd Commandment and to hide this they divided the 10th in two so it would still seem like it was 10. God personally wrote on Tablets of Stone and it is perverted by Hierarchy. Commandments 1 remove 2 and go to 3. 2 is Thou shalt not have any graven images before me.

    • @personallycatholic

      Edward, I think you may misunderstand the use of artwork in the Catholic Church. Unless perhaps you oppose any religious painting or image or even wearing a cross as a necklace as a Christian. If you oppose wearing a cross, hanging a cross in your house, or having a painting of Jesus based on your reading of Exodus 20:4, then, yes, you would probably oppose Catholic thought on Christian artwork. However, in Catholic artwork there is absolutely no belief that the artwork holds any magical power; it simply helps us focus our thoughts on God. You could break the Commandments in Exodus 20 down to 17 commandments if you wanted. We follow Augustine's breakdown of the Commandments. Protestants follow Origen's breakdown. Catholics believe the condemnation of graven images is a condemnation of creating false gods with one's hands and then worshiping them. We don't do that as Catholics. We believe in just one God in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. If you ever want to chat on the phone or in person, I would be happy to. My email is dan@personallycatholic.com. Email me and we'll share information. I live in the Philadelphia area. I hope this helps. I do believe Catholics and Protestants are more one than we know and human sin in the form of pride and ego divides us more than theology -- even though I do respect that there are theological differences. Reach out, my friend. In Him, Dan Tarrant

    @ Personally Catholic: Okay, so for formal Protestant theology, "faith alone" receives a declaration of being righteous (imputation) apart from works of any sort. After that, genuine works ensue. Do you assent to that? I am guessing likely not (?), as that does not seem to be what Catholics are able to assent to. Everyone would agree that faith alone leads to real Christian living, as you say. I don't believe there is any controversy in what you say. But does God declare us "righteous" by genuine faith apart from works of any sort? That seems to cut to the heart of the matter and clear up any ambiguity and confusion. Hope that helps.

    • @personallycatholic
      @personallycatholic 5 місяців тому

      Matt, yes. I agree to that. The Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification signed in the 1990’s under Pope John Paul II agrees to that. Really. If you email me, I’ll send you a copy of my book on this that has the Imprimatur of the Catholic Church. I sincerely believe there is more unity on this than people know. There certainly are differences between Catholicism and some other approaches to Christianity. But this really isn’t one of them. It’s so sad that we are kept divided by false assumptions about the other side’s point of view.

    I am Evangelical, raised Lutheran, spent time at Reformed Presby churches, etc. I found this video thought provoking. I have found this quote interesting from the Catholic Catechism of the Church, from section 2011: "After earth's exile, I hope to go and enjoy you in the fatherland, but I do not want to lay up merits for heaven. I want to work for your love alone. . . . In the evening of this life, I shall appear before you with empty hands, for I do not ask you, Lord, to count my works. All our justice is blemished in your eyes. I wish, then, to be clothed in your own justice and to receive from your love the eternal possession of yourself." ~ Thérèse of Lisieux It is interesting that Thérèse of Lisieux says, "I do not ask you, Lord, to count my works". She then goes on to express her desire to be clothed in the Lord's justice (righteousness?), which sounds like a righteous covering, or an "imputation of righteousness" apart from works. Obviously, there is much more to this, but this observation is interesting, if correct. Again, there is much more to consider on this topic, but the above appears to be present also.

    Yes in latin during current doctoral work with the editor of the Camridge Companion to the Council and you are misrepresenting it's teaching. In his 1535 Galatians commentary, Luther explicitly denied charity any role in our justification. That is what he meant by faith alone and that teaching was explicitly condemned at Trent. The Joint Declaration is inconsistent with Catholic teaching as Malloy has shown in his book engrafted into Christ and it has no binding authority on Catholics. Pope St. John Paul 2 applauded their efforts but it is complete mistepresentation to suggest that he put forth it's teaching as some kind of magisterial pronouncement. Grace alone always excluded cooperation in reformed statements and I come from a Protestant background and yes Protestants often do think that God saves us without our cooperation (this was an issue in the joint declaration along with the idea of merit). St. Thomas meant something entirely different by faith alone than Luther and it is uninformed and misleading to suggest that they somehow hold the same doctrine. I am sure you mean well but you aren't helping with unnuanced suggestions that we all just mean the same thing. A scratch below the surface shows that that is not the case.

    • @personallycatholic

      As a Catholic I could simply never make the statement that a document approved by the Vatican is inconsistent with Catholic teaching. I also could never state that the appendix to a document signed by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is inconsistent with Catholic teaching. I also couldn’t make those statements about a document approved under the Papacy of a Saint. That would be a complete lack of humility before the authority of the Church for me. There would need to be another answer. Anything short of a different answer would be profoundly inconsistent with Catholic teaching for me and make me the sole authority over my own Catholicism in my mind and be a truly protest approach to the Church. That is why I sought an Imprimatur in fact before sharing the book upon which much of this video is based. I don’t doubt the sincerity of your Catholicism or your walk with God, but to say texts with Vatican approval are inconsistent with Catholic teaching and a book with an Imprimatur from the Church is misrepresenting Church teaching has a boldness with which I would be uncomfortable no matter what my scholarly credentials are. Perhaps my scholarly credentials are not at the level yours are. I am humble enough to accept that. But if you say that an Imprimatur and Vatican approval is not enough to validate consistency with Church teaching… I really have no answer because that leaves you or you and a small handful of academics having greater authority over Church teaching than the Church itself. Again, I don’t doubt your walk with God or the sincerity of your Catholicism. I just couldn’t follow that logic myself in my personal relationship with God as a Catholic.

      @@personallycatholic The JD has been consistently understood by Protestants to contradict Catholic teaching. The most thorough treatment by a Catholic understands it in the same way. Read Malloy's book. Trent is the authoritative teaching and you are misleading others by using the formula faith alone. Pope Benedict says that formula is only correct if understood to not exclude charity and Luther explicitly excluded charity. So there was not misunderstanding. This is going to be my dissertation topic at CUA and my professors include a scholar who worked on the JD as a Lutheran and then became Catholic after understanding the Church's teaching on merit. There are significant problems with the JD and Malloy's work captures this. Again you need to read it for a better understanding of what you are talking about.

    • @AnselmInstitute

In terms of humility, you should submit your intellect to Trent without selectively picking a few chapters to present and ignoring others and ignoring the anathemas. That would be true submission to the Church's actual teaching. Again the JD is not even authoritative much less infallible. If you understood the nature of the documents and how the Church classifies documents you would know that.

      Luther apparently said God declared the sinner righteous in the "imputed" sense of the word, putting much emphasis on the Greek word "logizomai" (translated "impute"). Catholicism and Trent put the emphasis on the process of "being made righteous" and what that would mean practically speaking, hence faith working through love (fides formata caritate). Luther and the Reformers would say that "faith working through love" would fall under the rubric of sanctification. Those who are truly justified by faith alone will move on to works by love that can be seen and observed. Hence, a man is justified by works and not by faith alone when it comes to being justified in the sight of others. For us Reformed, justification is like the light of God shining on us through our faith. It has an "outside of us but covering us" feel to it. Sanctification is the "inside part". Our heart is changed by the Word, Spirit, and Christian life under the rubric of sanctification.

      If the Law of God contains all that is good and true in terms of the moral and ritual standards all works are included therein. “We are saved by faith alone apart from the moral and ceremonial works of the law” (St. Thomas Aquinas). Btw… the point of these videos and the book with the Imprimatur is not to attack the Catholic Church, it’s to show an entry point for Evangelicals who want it or at least a greater common ground between Catholics and Evangelicals. I am at Mass every Sunday and many weekdays and at Confession weekly. In no way is the intention to dispute anything with the Church… the intention is to show there is room for those may think there is no room for them or who may think there is nothing they have in common with Catholics. You are woefully misrepresenting Trent and the Pauline teaching on works. Trent teaches that faith and works are intertwined with grace for justification. Paul is speaking about unsalvific Jewish temple sacrifices. This is different than what is taught elsewhere that we are not justified by faith alone, which is Catholic teaching.

    • @personallycatholic
      @personallycatholic 6 місяців тому

      “Justification is not found in the moral and ceremonial works of the law but in faith alone.” - Saint Thomas Aquinas. Countless times Saints use “faith alone” and “apart from works” without linking these statements to stand exclusively in opposition to “temple sacrifices.” Saint Paul countless times says we are saved “apart from works” without adding “of the Law.” He does this in Ephesians, Romans and Galatians. I don’t think Aquinas or Paul or any of the Saints are woefully misrepresenting Church teaching. I also don’t think the book Christian and Catholic (which this video is based on) woefully misrepresents Church teaching. It has the Imprimatur signed by Archbishop Chaput (an extremely conservative bishop in the Church) and the Nihil Obstat from the Chancery of Philadelphia. I took great care in crafting that book to be faithful to the Church in every way - including humbly submitting it for the review process for the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur in our conservative archdiocese. To say these statements of the Saints, Trent, and Scripture about the “works” we are saved apart from only include the “ritual works of law” in every single statement about works in the lives of these Saints, Saint Paul, Trent, the Joint Declaration on Justification, and Pope Benedict XVI seems incongruent with reason and honesty about the texts. That position also seems an incomplete solution in harmonizing Paul and James in Scripture. The harmonization in the book referenced in the above video has the Imprimatur. To say it is not authentically Catholic means to deny the authenticity of the Chancery of Philadelphia and the Archbishop of Philadelphia as well as the authenticity of St. Thomas Aquinas’ statement mentioned earlier. Perhaps you find this approach in the video unhelpful to you. That is absolutely fine. But to claim it is a “woeful misrepresentation” of Trent and therefore Church teaching seems incompatible with the Church’s authority to give an Imprimatur and the theology of Aquinas. And please know I don’t mean this reply as an act of antagonism toward you, but as an act of clarification in humility for the sake of others who do find this approach helpful.

There is nothing in this video that is not also stated very directly in that document. There is also nothing in this video that does not have its origin in our book which has the Imprimatur. Are the Imprimatur and Vatican approval not enough to demonstrate responsibility and authenticity to the Catholic Church? It is fair to say "faith and works are intertwined with grace for justification" as you said. It's just the manner in which they are intertwined that one has to accept alternate approaches as valid like Augustine's approach when he wrote: "Grace is not given because we have done good works, but in order that we may be able to do them." He is a doctor of the Church. That must be an acceptable statement for a Catholic to make. And I would add to Augustine's statement myself (as you likely would too): "... and when we do those good works they open us up to more grace not because they have any merit on their own but because they can open the faith in our hearts wider to the God who has alone merited our salvation on the cross and are only in that way meritorious." Trust me, I am in no way diminishing the importance of the Sacramental life or the Universal Call to Holiness. I am at Mass more than weekly and Confession weekly and I encourage others to do the same all the time. I am merely inviting Evangelicals who see God through a "faith alone" lens to see there is a door for them to walk through into the Catholic Church or at least into a relationship with Catholics that is positive, life-giving and not contrary to their reading of Saint Paul.

      “We are saved by faith alone but faith is never alone.” - Martin Luther I can’t speak all of Luther’s heart for the duration of his life, but I do think there is more unity to be had on this no matter what dictionary we are using. And we live in a world where Christians need to be more one whenever possible while still fully respecting the differences. If you email me your address, I will personally mail you a free copy of Christian and Catholic with the Imprimatur.
