G&L Legacy Tribute-Thoughts After 7 Months of Abuse
Disclaimer: I made this video during a self quarantine, I got super sick and realized i finally had a little time to make a video on this subject (I am a full time chef outside of youtube land), so yeah its pretty raw and somewhat negative but I suppose that was supposed to be the point, to point out minor differences and feel for those who may be used to a more classic strat, and may not have the luxury of trying one out in store. That being said I love this guitar to death and have nothing but the utmost respect for everything G&L, in fact this is probably my favorite strat ive ever played, so take that for what its worth. Cheers guys! And wash your stupid hands! You need those to play guitar!

An impromptu jam with my new/used G&L Legacy strat. Your mostly hearing a Violet Rams Head Big Muff stacked over a Joyo Vintage Overdrive with some mild tape delay and Vox wah scattered throughout. Enjoy!

Lots of coffee before this one, also fun fact, its raining in Texas while shooting this today! After tuning it up and proceeding to play for a few short hours I decided to share my impressions of the guitar, and apparently an impromptu tangent about the Meat Puppets. Not much of a demo nor review, just pure fun with a guitar ive been wanting for way longer than I would like to admit. Also, feel...
Nameless Les Paul Jam #2 [Sc Custom/Dimarzio Super Distortion/ 36th Anniversary]

Everything is one take and was created in less than an hour. Made with a Harley Benton les paul modded with newly acquired Dimarzio pickups. Its really all in the title, its just a jam I came up with on the spot with a pretty obvious funkadelic inspiration. Enjoy!

The Harley Benton Sc Custom gets a major tonal upgrade in the form of some awesome new pickups by Dimarzio. These pickups sound incredible and seem to fit extremely well wth the aesthetics and feel of the guitar. Im left kind of speechless, Its like they were made for each other and depending on your stance on authenticity, I suppose they were! I hope this inspires others to do their own cost e...

One Minute Guitar Tip #1-Swap That Nut!

A properly slotted nut is the basis for any good setup. Random, unsavory buzzing after proper neck relief and action have been exhausted with a completely in explainable source can in many cases be solved by a simple nut swap, though for whatever reason, many seem to overlook this crucial detail, myself included (I thought well, its only a year and a half old, it couldnt possibly have worn down...

Fender Blacktop Jazzmaster with a GFS Mean 90 Pickup (Sound Demo/Original instrumental)

Song title: Spirits From the Past Everything is first take (obviously haha) I started by simply playing around with some freeish drum software and ended up accidentally making a few riffs around the semi-randomly generated loops. As I had just swapped the stock bridge for the GFS, and that is definitely the prevailing sound you hear, I thought it would make a decent sample of what you can do wi...

A demo about the Sc Custom in the realm of heavy doom and gloom. Drop C tuning, ranting in between, and fun with the distorted side of the spectrum in a slightly psychotic manor. I decide to "demo" all of the pedals on at the same time for no particular reason and im still refusing to edit much of anything, every mistake stays. A caffeine fueled rant/demo about my Blacktop Jazzmaster and her wonderful new addition the GFS Surf 90 pickup, getting into pickup height, and my thoughts on the stock humbucker and how this mod may not necessarily be important for some. This is the only video where I've seen someone demo the GFS Surf 90 using overdrive/distortion/fuzz. How well does it take pedals?
Great video and playing
is it just the amp or is a pedal also used?
Mostly just various amp settings. I only turn on the overdrive at the 5 or so minute mark.
ahh i see
Good playing brother, I really like the sound I might be looking to get this pickup and the video helped alot.
Hi Jerad, how are you doing? Do you play some improvisation in the clean parts or was it some 70's or 90's specific tones of your musical influences? Nice black LP and congratulations from Brazil! See you!
Doing very well and thank you! Cheers from North Texas! But yeah a lot of what i played in the middle was indeed improv of my own material, just having fun with it really. I make my videos very loosely to say the least!
Jerad, thanks by your reply! I must admit, this specific clean part thrown me in a deep introspection! I don't know why but it was so simple and strong. Thanks again by your feeling and this "loose way" to play. Keep rock on!
Nice video! I purchased a Surf 90 in 2013 but still haven't installed it on my Blacktop Jazzmaster due to priorities. But I'm getting back into it, and your videos have been the best for letting me know the kind of sounds I'd get!
Very nice! I'm also interested in putting the SD and the 36th anni in my HB SC Custom. I'm wondering if you put regular or F-spaced pickups in the guitar? Cheers!
Regular spaced in this one. Still have this setup to this day, super worth it!
@@jeradrhone8773 Thanks for your reply! I guess I'll be buying the regular ones as well or would you reckon the f-spaced ones would be a better fit for the guitar? Cheers!
I love my Legacy, but it weighs 10 lbs.
Ltd ec256? Great riffin' dude!
hell yea! PAF style humbuckers have always done me damn good with metal
DiMarzio Super Distortion pickups are classic!
Sounds great man! Best Mean 90 demo that I could find for crunch/heavy tones. Well done!
Nice honest review from a dude who obviously played the shit out of this thing and knows its ins and outs. It's really helped me make my buying decision.
At the end of the day, it only costs just over £200. What do you expect? You ain't gonna get Gibson quality components at that price. It's a workhorse, it's a Ford, not a Rolls Royce.
Hey buddy! Cool video. I want to ask you for one favor. Please, measure the neck, if possible. Neck thickness at 1 and 12 frets. I was thrilled by your remark about the thick neck.
Hey man thanks! Unfortunately I can not as I have since sanded it down some or i totally would! From what I remember I think it was something like .820 - .890, so really pretty average but I think the 12" radius makes it feel thicker, at least to me with my small hands and short, skinny fingers.
@@jeradrhone8773 Why did you sanded it? To remove lacquer, or to make it thinner? Was this neck originally thicker than the neck on your Les Paul?
@@ОлегЛесков-у8о Mostly just to remove the gloss and refinish with tru oil, though I did thin it some around the neck joint just for better access to the higher frets. Originally it was slightly thicker than my lp, im talking very slightly though.
You gotta remember though, the harley benton lp necks are nowhere near as thick as say a fat 50s lp or something like that.
Just did this to the exact same guitar, adjusting the action and lowering the pickups it's night and day compared to factory setup Fucking thanks!
Your welcome!
SG's dont sound dark and they're mahogany. But there is mahogany and then there is mahogany. And the weight will affect the tone. That's a pretty weighty guitar. Try gigging two hrs with that around your neck. You can't expect a Gibson or Epiphone tone out of these. I'd change those pickups.
I feel ya man, this ones a little over 10 pounds which i know is kinda light for an lp. Since publishing this video ive gone back and forth on the whole subject of woods, weight, pot values, scale length etc. a lot of it due to comments on this very video. But the single thing ive found that always affects tone most drastically is, you guessed it, the fucking pickups haha! Which i have now changed by the way.
One of the most passionate informative and introspective guitar reviews I've ever seen brotha!
What value volume pots did you use for the surf 90?
500k
@@jeradrhone8773 thank you!
Buckethead! Gets a sub!
No guitar will remain in "pristine" condition if you play it moderate hard anyway. That's is what is called natural ware, which is unavoidable. In other words, good guitars are meant to be played a lot and hard..., so your point in this regard is worthless.
Already have a G&L Fallout, looks like I’m getting one of these. Great review, they are very different to others but that’s what makes them so good.
Awesome man. Never tried a fallout myself but they look sweet. But yeah just shop around the used market for a few days, theres bound to be a deal somewhere. Payed 350 with shipping for this one used and it still had the plastic on it, basically new.
Thank you dude. Nice video keep going. To be honest i bought this guitar 3 days ago , and now i saw your video. I am totally agree with you , the guitar is awesome for 170 euros that i paid. Comparing the roswell pickups with my emg 707 at my ibanez rgix27feqm , I can hear the difference the is no so big output there , for example when i am trying to record i volume down the backing track around 35-40% so i can hear the roswell pickups but with emg 707 not even 25%. The comparision is about 170 euros guitar vs 1200. So well done harley benton, you cant find better guitar at this price range from other companies. Just change the pickups and you gonna have a guitar at 400-600 price range . Personally i am thinking to replace them with emg passive .
Thanks man! And yeah, i didnt mind the roswell pups at all, solid and useable for sure. Eventually i did decide to go for a somewhat more classic sound for mine with a super distortion bridge and a paf 36th for the neck. Totally worth it, cheers!
Not enough distortion.
I've been looking into this or a strat, so thanks for this vid! I played bass for 20 yrs before I ever bought a guitar, picked up an SG a few yrs back because the 12" radius felt more natural to me as a bass player... this has been very helpful, G & L for me.
Gibsons are 12 inch radius.
I dig the aging on the hardware.
what is amp you use?
+1 thumb up for the sounds and the husky dog pic! ;-) .... I'm researching this pickup (and others from Guitar Fetish ... I already have two of their bigsby-ish vibrato tailpieces and they are great quality ~ the same Bigsby (not licensed) would be like $280 CAD
Thanks man, and nice snag! Ive only tried this and the mean 90 so far but ive been fairly impressed.
@@jeradrhone8773 (had a husky dog ... sadly gone ... she was so fun in winter ... just wanted to go out and rub against snow banks LOL) ... kind of thinking I might get a kwik-plug harness and maybe the two lipstick tube humbucker-size split-coil pickup and the Surf 90 for a cheap Gretsch streamliner ... but the kwikplug thing might be cool to easily try out various affordable pickup combos!
@@moonmelder2965 I feel ya man that sucks, lost mine a couple of years ago as well. Hanging with a husky in the snow sounds wonderful, here in tx were lucky to get one or two snow days a year, if that. But yeah dude i say go for it!
Bruh, where do you get your tabs . . .
Buckethead ;-)
Thanks for the review. Been thinking of purchasing as a first electric guitar for my son (and me 😉). He wants and Ibanez for whatever reason but I think there is value and flexibility in a G&L at the same price point (but I’m no expert).
Great video!!! It made me plug in my Ditto Looper !!
Just keep playing! I've the same pickups and know what you mean. Excellent demo and tasty playing!!!
thanks for this, defo buying one of these now!
Hey check out Royal Blood, bit different to the Meat Puppets
Great deal on that man, sounds great! I wanted a G&L, but was too expensive. I was able to score a Tagima T-635 for 169 bucks before their price went up to around $300 to 350. Much better than any of my affinitys ive had...its even vintage white with mint green pickgaurd! I love the mint green as well. Great score man, thanks for sharing. Be safe.
Great job man, thank you! Would have took you for the floyd rose 1000 type...stereotypes are a bitch. Im bald and bearded, with a permanent resting bitch face! I love mine! Be safe man, great job!
Ah, r.b.f. i know it well haha. But yeah i know what you mean, people tend to think im a super all metal all the time kinda guy at first glance and i do love heavy music but the truth of the matter is i grew up basically listening to the classics like beatles and pink floyd! Thanks man and take care, glad your enjoying yours as well.
@@jeradrhone8773 Right on man, same here, sabbath and ozzy...and 80's hair bands, lol. Now Im more into blues. Youre very welcome, and thank you! Be safe out there as well man. Catch ya later Jerad!
Great video. I noticed there are two other versions of this guitar: One with P90 pickups and another less expensive one with a basswood body , instead of mahogany. Any recommendations? Really love the killer looks but can´t decide between the three.
This video is super useful. Thank you so much sir
why so few subscribers? Besides the lightning and other visual stuff, that was a great review. Showed everything, played the guitar nicely, pros, cons, honest words. Just a great video.
love your hair dude which mine was like that.
Captain Beyond, Capricorn Records, Raging River of Fear
Im really digging Captain Beyond. Great stuff, thanks for the recommendations!
Hydra, Capricorn Records, Glitter Queen
Hey I also like the Meat Puppets... I can't recommend much stuff maybe you already know Big Star's albums... I record music myself and some of it is influenced by the Meat Puppets and surf rock stuff. My album is called "Through the Cobwebs" and a song you might like is "In the Lounge"
Right on man! Big Star is a band ive heard about all my life but have yet to give them a listen, maybe its time. And I will certainly check out your album next time i get a little time, Meat Puppets inspired music with a surf rock lean, count me in. Also, I know you commented a month ago but I guess youtube decided to not notify me, as well as a slew of other comments, no idea why. Anyways, cheers my friend!
Is your music posted here on youtube or elsewhere perhaps? Checked out your channel but I couldnt find it.
Cool guitar. I can't decide this or the doheny or a jaguar... I like the sea foam and blue colors
Hey nice review. You hit on all the points that matter. Didn't oversell it but presented the positives really well. And honest about other aspects. Thanks. Do some more videos!
Thanks for the kind words man.
I never comment on youtube but i just felt the need to sign in.You play so much better than all the other videos that do reviews of guitars and play random boring stuff. Really like your tone maybe because i like more dark stuff. Either way thank you for this videos. I play acoustic and i am searching for a first electric. I love the esp 1000 but will never have it on that price. So i was hopping to find the best value at around 200$ and most people say that HB has guitars that are better quality that other brands on same price so...les hope so.
Thanks a lot for that man! Its pretty hard to beat for the price and it certainly has a nice dark sound, most people i show it to or let play think its much more expensive, plus if you want a change of pace later on you can always use the cash you saved and change the pickups or whatever like i did. Honestly though i envy you man, your first electric is something to cherish no matter what brand you choose. Cheers!
@@jeradrhone8773 I wish that my parents agreed on me learning guitar when i was a kid even if that meant to play on a brick with strings made out of hair of an old hag hehe. Its never too late thou. I wont buy another guitar for the next 2-3 years so i want to buy the best possible on my budget. You believe this is a lot better than a yamaha or squier on same price?
@@ΝΙΚΟΣΤΣΟΥΧΛΟΣ I feel ya! I learned on possibly the worst rig of all time, besides what you just described of course haha, didnt matter though and still doesnt. But if you want a les paul then yeah absolutely, very respectable guitar and hard to beat for 200ish bucks. As for strats, low end squires are iffy to me, as in you would technicaly have "a guitar that sounds alright and works" but may not be super proud to show up to a jam session with, with the harley you would, anywhere anytime. I hear great things about the yamaha pacifica though i have never played one. My personal advice to you or anyone who may want an affordable strat though look into a used g&l legacy tribute, a little more expensive (250-350) but hands down the best bang for your buck strat i have ever played. Hope this helped and didnt just send you farther down the rabbit hole!
@@jeradrhone8773 Thanks very much for your time. I Absolutely love this guitar . The 1st time i say the esp ec 1000 was love at 1st sigh hehe. But cant have it of course so this is the closest to my budget. I am not interested to either yamaha or squiers aesthetically but if they where at better quality and sound than HB i could think about it. Most people say that HB guitars feel like 300 € or more while others say that they have bad quality control with a lot o visual defections. I guess you have to be a little lucky not to get a really bad one.
@@ΝΙΚΟΣΤΣΟΥΧΛΟΣ I have had plenty guitars, Gibson, PRS SE, Ibanez..... Currently own this HB SC-Custom II and a Yamaha Pacifica 311H. The Yamaha beats all of the mentioned guitars in price/quality, for 269€ you get a new Pacifica 311H with locking Grover tuners, Graph tech parts etc.. the thing is beautifully built , sounds much more dynamic and alive than the HB and most importantly stays in tune for ages! Yamahas are the best bang for the buck. I would vouch for Harley if their QC was better, i have had 3 negative experiences with their build quality, too many guitars with aesthetic and functional issue pass through their "QC". So price/quality ratio is best with the Yamahas, you cant go wrong with any of their instruments.
I recently bought an SC500WH which is a gorgeous guitar. I swapped out the pickups, had the electronics redone, and upgraded the tuning pegs. It's a solid guitar and plays great but due to the dry winter weather here in Minnesota it's developed a bit of fret sprout that I'm thinking will resolve itself as the weather warms and the humidity starts rising. I tried to fix sprout on a guitar once and as soon as it hot humid the frets started popping up all over the place so I don't recommend fixing fret sprout when the wood is shrunk up due to a dry weather environment. Otherwise these are really nice guitars at any price.
Right on man, i loved modding mine with a super d and paf35th, kept the same wiring and worn hardware which i actually really like the looks of. Ive got a couple of weird frets as well, though they are not really noticeable unless i am actively looking for them, just some inevitable truss/action adjustments and its good to go.
Also thanks for the info, ive actually never tried to fix a fret myself but i have a strat with a single fret problem that i am thinking about attempting to fix and have not even considered the humidity factor.
Thanks for honest review. Most other reviews I've seen on these guitars usually lean super positive or super negative depending on if they are compensated endorsers. Anyways I have the same model guitar for around 6 months and it has held up nicely. These Harley Benton guitars are a tremendous value. As far as having to swap out pickups etc... that happens in guitars of every price point. Anyways great review, keep up the good work. Fellow Texan by the way. Rock On
