The Tenkaichi Story | A Complete Analysis
The Sparking series, known in the West as Budokai Tenkaichi, stands as a remarkable chapter in the history of Dragon Ball games. Join me in this retrospective, as we explore the cultural and gaming climate during its inception, delve into a detailed analysis of each installment, and reflect on its triumphant return over a decade later.
- Corrections -
It has been correctly noted that while the Budokai Tenkaichi 2 international soundtrack was directed by Takanori Arima, he was not the sole composer, as the video may have implied. A complete list of contributors to the soundtrack can be found here vgmdb.net/product/14851

Great video, but: 2:28:45 Ultimate Tenkaichi sold better than Raging Blast 2, and the reason Spike stopped working on mainline Dragon Ball games after UT is because they were put on J-Stars almost immediately after. 2:29:08 Spike didn’t return to Dragon Ball for so long due to a combo of other projects being greenlit and Bandai putting Spike elsewhere. - While Spike worked on J-Stars, Xenoverse was in development. - Immediately after J-Stars was released, Spike moved to One Piece: Burning Blood. While BB was in development, so were both DBFZ and XV2, and Kakarot was recently greenlit around the same time. - When Burning Blood wrapped up, Spike moved onto Jump Force. While JF was in development, so were both Kakarot and Breakers. - Soon after Jump Force was out, that’s when Sparking! ZERO was greenlit. It was more a matter of schedules not lining up because games were taking longer to make, not a punishment for UT’s performance. 2:30:49 Extremely weird statement to make when Spike constantly released Bandai-published games AND games based on Shueisha manga (HxH, One Piece, two Jump crossovers, One Punch Man) since 2011. 2:31:06 This is correct, but the core members that mattered remained. Tenkaichi’s director is still there as a producer, several planners and programmers are still there, and one of the character modelers is actually the director of Sparking! ZERO. 2:43:58 FighterZ was Arc System Works’ third Dragon Ball game.

Honestly, I've NEVER liked the Budokai series. I have NEVER thought DBZ has ever worked as a traditional fighting game, not even FighterZ. It just doesn't work and it just doesn't fit the licence or what you expect to do in it. People should want to fly on command, shoot ki on command with a dedicated button, move about in 3D battle situations to do all the positioning and dodging and countering seen in the manga and the show. So I've always found it baffling why people like the Budokai series so much when it's so forced into "traditional" fighting game style and feels so UN-LIKE Dragon Ball Z ever should. To this day, the only games associated with this series I will ever like or enjoy playing are Tenkiachi Budokai 2, 3, and now 4 (aka Sparking Zero), Xenoverse 1&2, and Kakarot. No other games feel right for this franchise, or they're just flat out bad.

A MASTERPIECE in storytelling, editing, documenting and entertainment. I watched the whole thing in one sitting. This is an amazing gift to the community and you deserve all the praise you get for it. Great work. It's so cool to see so much history I did and didn't know even down to the memes being included in some way. This looks like it took so long to make. P.S. Is the "4" thing the reason why Infinite World isn't called Budokai 4? I thought you would've touched on that game too. But nonetheless, amazing video.

TeamBT4 are insane, I've been following the BT4 project for years and it's absolutely unbelievable how far it's come over the years. The moment they cracked the engine to be able to add without replacing and change inherent core systems was massive. The fact they have their own transformation system now is amazing. Theyre even working on super move customization through the item system right now

PSP was introduced in 2004? That doesn’t sound right. Maybe I’m wrong. Nintendo DS, 2004? That doesn’t sound right either. I thought both of those were in 2006 at the earliest. Maybe I’m remembering that wrong.

Videos like this are so hard to come across. At first I wasn't sure what to expect when clicking the video. Was it going to be a podcast? A full tournament? Some gameplay? Maybe it would end up being AI slop. When I started watching the editing was almost too good. I thought this might be something poorly researched like an IGN or Gamer video. But your attention to detail and dedication is something I have almost never seen before. There is so much hyper specific information in this video that makes it a genuine masterclass in long form content. Going as in depth as figuring out the inner workings as to why and how they got the composer for Tenkaichi 2, or explaining all the intricacies of each games systems, making diagrams and adding memes to make the viewer experience stronger. The way you thrust the viewer into a time period to help illustrate what it must've felt like at the time. This is one of my favorite videos of all time now. Easily. The Tenkaichi community has never been so lucky before. I used to watch Omega and Grand Master Hawk's content a long time ago. I even used to frequent one of the servers you showed in the 'Wanna Go Again' section. Seeing people like Grand Master Hawk, and even Omega being brought up takes me back man. Thank you for this video. I am lucky to have found it and you are something out of this world for making it.

I’m truly at a loss for how to respond to such kindness-thank you! This video took over 300 hours to create. A warning for Sparking Zero apologizers : This video contains footage of Tenkaichi 3 being played competitively as well as mentions of advanced techniques used by competitive Tenkaichi 2 players. Please don't say that the Sparking series isn't made for competitive play after that. If games like Hokuto no Ken can be played in tournaments, there's nothing that can stop SZ from being played the same way. The androids have been fixed btw, and they were always banned in community-made tournaments in the first version of the game, just not in the official tournament organised by Bandai which lead to the infamous clip of the elevator tech.
