The Sound of Hiking (Australia) | No talking, No music
A few of the sounds we routinely hear on our hiking trips. I thought it might be nice to capture this in a video for something different. Callum and I were jibber jabbering all day (as always) but these are the moments we are quiet and enjoying the peace around us.
I hope you enjoy

Bath Skyline Walk | England | UK

To help us combat jet lag Callum and I did the beautiful 10km Bath Skyline Loop trail on our first morning in England. Callum's luggage had been lost by the airline and he only had the clothes on his back and his RM Williams boots on his feet. We enjoyed watching the sun rise over the city and shifting our focus from the events of the previous day. It was the perfect way to start our month long...
West Highland Way, Scotland UK | 2023

In August 2023 Callum and I travelled to Scotland to visit his family and attend his cousin's wedding. While we were there we took the opportunity to hike the 154km West Highland Way. We had a wonderful week with the usual ups and downs of hiking (both literally and metaphorically). We thoroughly enjoyed the landscape in the misty weather and thoroughly despised the midges. Thanks for watching ...

    Hi, how did you book your accommodation? I am doing net year, there are some companies in Australia that will do it all for about $6k... for the whole camino plus take yr stuff every day ... thoughts?

    • @callumclairesadventures8793
      @callumclairesadventures8793 6 місяців тому

      Hi, we only booked the first four nights up to Pamplona. We were able to get accommodation across the rest of the Camino easily without booking (except after Sarria where the hoards join the pilgrimage). I would recommend booking the first four nights and the last few from Sarria to Santiago. You can also book just one or two days in advance depending on how you are feeling. I liked the flexibility of being able to stop in whatever town we wanted as we weren’t locked into a booking. There are vast differences in accommodations, we were on the cheaper side rarely staying in hotels and mostly staying in municipal or privately run Albergues. This kept our costs down to on average €30 per day per person for everything (food, Accom, church donations) so about $50AUD per day and we took 6 weeks bringing our total to $2,100pp. We carried our gear each day so didn’t have the expense of transporting luggage. I know you could get this service for €5 per day and use as you like between towns. We did use www.expressbourricot.com/ to transport our main suitcases from St Jean Pied de Port to Santiago where it was held by a hotel in Santiago for us for as long as we needed. This one off luggage service cost was €70. You really don’t need to take much, we took about 3-4kg each which was very easy to carry daily and trekking poles are a great assistance when walking. I hope this helps!

    I have just finished watching all the Camino journey. I stopped inside the first few minutes of this video because I am overwhelmed with a feeling of being both humbled and feeling absolutely inadequate. Your whole family achieved something special. And you gave me the gift of a valuable heads-up. When I walk the Camino I'll make sure I pack a folding toilet seat and a pop-up toilet tent. ( I'm not risking running a gauntlet of the poo-mined grassy areas of the Way. I like having white shoes too much. I didn't realise that you had walked in Scotland - I live in Edinburgh ( someone has to). So I'll watch more of your videos later . So thank you for making my day comfortable; made it feel worthwhile, too.

    Hi Claire, You were mentioning about the lack of soap and toilet paper supplied along the Camino. I have noticed over the years that this has been an issue but what I think has happened is that the bars, hostels etc have associations and they about things costs like toilet paper and soap that continually got taken from their toilets. So most of them stopped restocking. Chris from Sydney, Australia 🇦🇺

    Especially because of covid, I wouldn't want to share any toiletries with a few hundred people. I would definitely carry my own wipes. It's bad enough that some places have bed bugs. I imagine they get into your belongings and people carry them from bed to bed. Enjoying your journey and hoping the end was purposeful to all even if everyone experienced something that is personal to themselves.

    I hope the teens appreciated the journey in the end. They seemed to complain about being there and I felt that they didn't want to do this, and were forced to do it. It's not their idea of vacation or fun. Maybe they are not ready for enlightenment because they haven't lived a longer life. Hoping for a better additude in the end and a feeling of accomplishment and awakening. It was a beautiful thought to bring the teens along as long as they didn't stop you from completing your purpose. I would have loved to have this opportunity in my teens.

Lovely to chat to another Adelaidian! heysentrail.asn.au/heysen-trail/accommodation/

      We used nearly all euro cash in notes as it was easier to manage our budget that way. We had a daily budget of 30Euro pp so for our family of 4 it was 120 euro per day. We withdrew it weekly and kept in a money belt. This was the perfect amount and we finished right on budget. Since covid, credit and debit cards are accepted at a lot of places now but we found cash easier. 💛💙✌️

    Thank you Callum and Claire's Adventures for sharing your beautiful journey. I'd sincerely appreciate your thoughts: To what extent do you think wild camping or camping in campgrounds is possible on the Camino Frances? My partner and I are experienced lightweight backpackers and already have our gear and would enjoy being able to camp part of the time and to occasionally stay in albergues and hotels. And do you think it would it be possible to do this while still meeting up with new friends for meals in town? We've also heard horror stories about how noisy some of the albergues can be at night, making it impossible to sleep, so that a tent for a good part of the time seems even more attractive (would you agree)?

    • @callumclairesadventures8793
      @callumclairesadventures8793 Рік тому

      Thank you Leigh 🙏 During our little journey we didn’t see anyone camping, I have heard of some people doing it but I think it may be illegal to camp along most sections of the frances? But I could be wrong on this 😊 I do think you may miss a lot of the pilgrim experience if you camped but it also depends on what experience you are looking for. We found our bonds with other pilgrims really strengthened along the Meseta in the albergues over meals at night. In terms of noisy pilgrims and sleeping in albergues it was not too much of an issue for us. We had a couple of nights where people were up early and a bit noisy but overall it didn’t bother us. We used earplugs at night when needed and booked the occasional private room. We love nature hiking and camping too but I think on this hike in particular you may miss out on the pilgrim community experience. But if it is legal and it is your preferred way to hike I would say go for it 💙💛✌️

      @@callumclairesadventures8793 Thank you very much. Your personal experience matters much more than any quick comment in a guide book or forum and I really appreciate you sharing it. Also wondering about the cost of private rooms for 2 in an albergue, government guest house or modest hotel versus the cost of 2 people staying in your average albergue. If we don't take our camping gear we'd love to know we have the option of a quiet room if loud noise is a consistent problem (especially hearing that the Camino Frances is becoming more and more popular).

      @@callumclairesadventures8793 Nice, we would love to do the Del Norte, but unfortunately our companies won't sign off 6 weeks again (last year was our delayed honeymoon so they were a little bit more generous) so we will settle with Portugal, setting off from Porto on the 21st August and will also do Santiago to Finisterre as we didn't have time last year to complete that. Highly addictive!

    I have thoroughly enjoyed watching your journey! Fellow South Australians (Barossa)...planning to go August 2024! Have a small question (may be more) did you get the train straight from Charles de Gaulle or from Paris to St Jean pied de port? Best place you stayed?

      Thank you!!💙💛 How exciting 2024 😀 we spent a week in Paris to help us get over jet lag and explore the city a bit. Then we caught the train from Gare Montparnasse to Bayonne and Bayonne to SJPDP…but this was booked as one ticket. When we went they overbooked the train from Bayonne to SJPDP so they put the extras into a bus to SJPDP. We thankfully got the train which was much nicer. My favourite albergue was in San Nicholas along the Meseta. We had a great shared meal, the albergue was quaint and we were so comfortable we all accidentally slept in the next morning. I wish you a Buen Camino! ✌️
