    Hey Dillon - fellow Booktuber here! :) Sent by the lovely Kevin Towle Reads. :) My gosh, yes. I TRIED to read LOTR: Fellowship and I was okay with it...until. They. Started. Walking. LOL! I thought, "Please! Let them GET to the point they're going!" Haha! (That being said, I LOVE the movies!) I'm reading some of the negative comments and they disappoint me. How DARE you not like a book! I mean...you should follow everybody else's thoughts. I'm happy to be a new subscriber and follow you on your reading journey! You keep being you, my young friend. :) Merry Christmas!

    I can understand your point of view. I think you don't seem like a person who cares about deeper lore and knowing more about the world itself, especially if you're hyped about another book. I've just started reading the Fellowship of the Ring for the first time and I'm absolutely hooked as a LotR fan. My main reason why I want to read the books is to have an even better and deeper understanding of the story, world, history and characters of Middle Earth. I suppose that the only thing that I can agree with you is the writing, it can be a little bit dragging and difficult sometimes. I hope you can give LotR abother chance in the future when you don't have any other books waiting for you to read them.

    i'm glad you realize your mindset was off. the hobbit was the first fantasy book i read as a kid and that 100% affected how i read all other fantasy lit, so it makes sense that when you finally sit down with lotr as a whole you'll have perspectives that differ - go through with it anyway! the ideas that tolkien created ubiquitous fantasy tropes that authors steal is dead wrong and i think you'll be surprised and mostly for the best. i never took notes but if thats how you engage... i would recommend 30 minutes of pregame before reading, meaning NO other fiction, as a kind of palette cleanser.

    We all aren't the same on this planet. It's perfectly alright for you not to enjoy a popular book. What I will say is this. Yes, the book does include basically the same scenes from the movies but they include so much more detail. The different parts of Middle Earth and it's creatures and there cultures. How they interact with with each and of course the songs too. This a slow burn, as Frodo walks to Mount Doom in Mordor, on foot. After you have finished the whole series, and you still don't enjoy it, please remember that completely ok. There is probably popular books that I don't like as well. Stay strong!

  • @coolbrotherf127

    I will say that the poems and songs do actually provide important history and context for why the plot is what it is. It's the kind of details like those that keep people reading the books to this day as there's so much under the surface besides just the main quest with the Ring that has been playing out since the beginning of Middle Earth. I definitely understand being put off by those parts, I definitely was too the first time I read it, but I grew to appreciate the very detailed world building on subsequent reads.

    It's a rare person who does a postmortem and decides to make some changes to improve. 🙂 For most books I also don't take notes, but lately, when I come across a detail that seems important, I highlight it and take notes (I do most of my reading on a Kindle these days, so doing both of those things on it is really easy!). This has especially helped me with books in a series, where there are important early points that pop up again later. I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts...both on this, and other things you read!

    You saying that you weren't sure why you weren't getting into the LOTR books is exactly how I felt and still feel, even though I'm into the books now. I feel like one thing I've noticed I dislike are the exposition dumps. Especially when the exposition is told to us through a character's dialogue. Gandalf can ramble on, and for me it can get quite tedious to read. Another example is how JRR Tolkien withholds information and waits to unload it onto us during an exposition chapter. For example, there were mysteries set up (like what happened to Gandalf at the beginning of Fellowship) that were left unanswered. Every time I felt like it was a good time for JRR to unveil the answers, he has the character say something like "We can discuss this later" or "now is not the time to discuss such matters" and then dumps all of these revelations in one go. I feel the movie did this better, giving some background and answering questions along the way. The Council of Elrond should have been like it was in the movie, only about the ring. However, there was more discussed during that chapter than need be, in my opinion. There was also a lack of action for a while in Fellowship. Where you stopped, in Moria, was where the book begins to ramp up. The attack of the watcher in the water, the attack of the trolls and orcs, the balrog, all make for exciting reading. I always try to tread lightly because some people will accuse me of just being a simple-minded reader who just needs action to keep my attention. That is not the case, but I do feel Fellowship can be too slow at times and I wish some scenes played out differently. For example, in the scene at Weathertop, Frodo passes out before the fight with the Wraith's and Aragorn really starts. I think if you can make it further, Two Towers will be better for you. It is better at balancing the slower parts with the quicker parts. I feel the pacing "issues" can be attributed to the fact that LOTR was meant to be ONE book. And since that is the case, I feel like that explains why Fellowship was slower. It was the very beginning of a huge, epic novel. That's why when you get 3/4ths of the way through the book and you're like "Finally, it's starting to pick up" and wondering why it took so long, it's because you're technically only finishing the first quarter of a roughly thousand-page novel. Anyway, I like the books now, but I still prefer the movies. I mean, I haven't finished TT yet and have yet to read Return of the King, BUT... JRR has my attention now. It took my three failed attempts at reading Fellowship to finally finish it and move onto TT. If you make it past where you said you stopped in your review, I feel it'll grab your attention. If not, well, then it is what it is. No piece of art is going to work for everybody. Good luck with your next readthrough!

      Your first point was what I was trying to get across in my review but I was having a hard time articulating that! I did get through Moria but only just, I believe we were about to meet Galadriel. Your point about it meaning to be one book is why I am intending on reviewing all three in one video as I think that will make a lot more sense. I don’t think I’ll start it for a few more months but I REALLY want to finish! Thank you for the comment I appreciate the time and effort you took for such a well thought out response.

    • @josephreitzcomposer6855
      @josephreitzcomposer6855 25 днів тому

      @ I guess I needed to get my thoughts out as well. It took me a while to pinpoint why the books weren’t grabbing hold of me like other books do but I think what I said above is why. I thought of one more thing and that it is I wish I knew more about that the enemy was doing. Without spoiling too much, Saruman doesn’t make as many appearances in the books as he does in the novel. I would like to know what the enemy is up to but their plans are usually left a bit of a mystery until they show up to fight our heroes. I think it would have been cool to see how Saruman makes the Uruk-hai in the books, but they are just sorta…made. Anyway, I don’t want to ramble too much haha.

      @@josephreitzcomposer6855 As I mentioned to Dillon in the comments on his last video, while Tolkien has gotten known for his world building, the LotR books are so much more than that. They're bona fide literature, and therefore, there's a lot to be gained by treating it is such. Asking questions as you read such as, who are these characters, what do they choose to do, why, and how do they finally do so? While reading if you think more about what Tolkien is saying to us by having his characters behave as they do, and concentrate less on its plot and "the world" (which while groundbreaking back when he wrote it, seems quaint today), you'll potentially get more out of it!

    • @heofnorenown
      @heofnorenown 24 дні тому

      Yeah, it took me a few tries, at one point I skipped fellowship entirely and went straight to two towers, but now I’m completely in love with the story. In no world would I say I prefer the movies, the first time I read it cover to cover out loud was practically a religious experience. Something I noticed that might help is that a lot of the writing has a natural flow to it that can seem staccato at first, but you realize has a kind of poetry to it. Also try to visualize the landscapes described it helps a lot and adds to the mood.

    • @glauer42
      @glauer42 23 дні тому

      @@heofnorenown Agreed. Contrary to all the Dungeons and Dragons it inspired, Tolkien's writing is not, "They walk into the room. There is an active fireplace where wood is being burned. An elf kneels in front of it. They are slender, with long blonde hair, and clearly ruminating about something." Because he has a way with words, it works better if one REFLECTS on what he's written, rather than trying to pound through it. And I get why in our fast based lives why this is something many might not want to do, but I encourage people to TRY. 🙂

That's just humanity for you. But as long as you're speaking in good faith about your honest reaction to the book, I hope you won't let any of that get you down. Don't forget that we're talking about recreational reading here. As much as I enjoy Lord of the Rings, it's just a piece of fiction at the end of the day. I can understand returning to it after some time has passed to see if you view it differently, but forcing yourself to engage with it because you feel some sort of external pressure to do so is another matter. As someone who enjoyed the movies first as a kid then tried the books i can see why it isnt as enjoyable at first. I think i tried the books several times before i finished the first. I would say the first half of Fellowship can suffer with its pacing somewhat., but after that it was smooth sailing and one of the best series of books i have ever read. On the criticisms of the setting, i have to disagree. But i am english, and therefore biased 😆. Ive had the pleasure to enjoy the English countryside with my own eyes and its beauty which rarely disappoints. Tolkien captures that feeling very well for me.

  • @glauer42

    Thanks for sharing! it's unfortunate that the movies, although very good, have obviously caused some issues with regards to some being able to enjoy the books. I was fortunate enough to have read LotR a couple of times before the movies ever came out, so didn't have any issue with that aspect of it. But besides that, if you ever feel like taking another crack at it, I suggest thinking of the books as being about more than the "world building." Yes, it's a lot of what Tolkien is famous for, but it's really the surface level of LotR; the books are so much more than that! Take some time to think about who these chars are, why they are doing what they're doing, and how they've decided to do it. What if they had chosen to do something else? How would it affect what happens and how people feel about them? There's so much there to explore, especially because....Jackson CHANGED the chars at times (see: Faramir). So to see what the original intent was is worth the read.

      @@Dillon__Morris Thank you for reading my comments! A lot of us who were fortunate enough to have read the books before Jackson did the films (in other words, we're old) likely have a different perspective. There's just so much going on in the books, and to appreciate it, one has to look beyond the world building. It's my opinion that ever since LotR came out, via Dungeon Masters who run Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, all the way to writing of modern fantasy works, the "world" is what grabs people. And that means many have missed what else is so great about Tolkien. I get that you have other things to read (oh man, I've been there!), but if you decide to take another crack at it, just think less about what happens, and more about what Tolkien is trying to say, and you may enjoy it a bit more. 🙂

    Yeah, while they share a setting and a few characters, The Hobbit really does have a different tone from The Lord of The Rings and stands quite separately as a distinct experience. That being said, I'm always amazed by how much the tone evolves during the course of this book. When you compare the singing dwarves cleaning up after dinner in the first chapter with Bilbo nearly being murdered by Thorin after making the difficult choice to "betray" the dwarves in an attempt to prevent a bloody war, it's strange to realize it's all part of the same story. Yet I'd argue that it works very well. Thanks for the commentary, and have a good one.

Books are to be enjoyed first and foremost, so I don't understand why the Tolkien fandom reacts so sharply whenever someone says something bad about the books.

      It’s just because they are passionate. I completely expected this when I made the video haha

    I'm really curious how many dislikes are on this video. Saying you have so many other things to read over LOTR makes me think you only read action packed modern fantasy. Sad.

      It’s more the anticipation of reading stories that I don’t already know. Not really sad, everyone has their own tastes

    Stephen King is an excellent writer his character is really feel like they're real people. But you do make a valid critique about his weird and somewhat disturbing way mentioning underage boys genitalia... I don't really know what's behind that but it happens in other books and other stories too... Although he's often said that to the 70s and 80s were basically just a complete drug-fueled writing frenzy for him and he doesn't have much recollection of the time so I chalk it up to being completely obliterated stoned and high and drunk all the time. Highly recommend The Dark Tower series... It's kind of a weird post-apocalyptic, multiverse hopping, fantasy Western.

      It was really my only critique in a nearly flawless book otherwise! I had to get nitpicky since the book was so good. I’ll get around to The Dark Tower eventually but my TBR is massive haha

    Have you read Stephen King's magnum opus yet? The Dark Tower series is 7 novels plus one stand alone novel that directly ties in. The amazing thing is that The Dark Tower ties in with so many of his other works that I've spent decades devouring every King book to see how deep and complex the Stephen King multiverse really is. IT and 'Salem's Lot both connect to the Dark Tower, btw...

      Nope, not yet! I’ve only read ‘Salem’s Lot by King but I loved it

      @@Dillon__Morris well when you finally get around to reading The Dark Tower I would recommend reading through it two times. I recommend this because the whole series took him more than 30 years to write and by the time that he finished telling the story, there were things about the first three books that he wanted to change because they were 30 years old at this point, and he wanted to modify some of the first three books to make it more congruent with the last four. So my recommendation is to pop into a used bookstore somewhere and try to find the 90s or 80's versions of these first three books, then read the whole series through, then restart the series, with the 2000s version of the first three books and continue reading the series from there. It really gives the reader a sense of repeating the story, which a central theme of King's body of work.

      @@Ottawajames having read it myself. Dark Tower is a giant POS. I wouldn't recommend my worst enemy read it at all. It's a waste of trees.

      @@dustinneelySoS was bad, and the final book didn't end in an entirely satisfactory way, I'll give you that. I agree that some of the choices that King made were questionable but overall I very much enjoyed it. Plus being that it's the keystone to unlocking King's multiverse, I consider it essential reading for King fans.
