Coomber rotary engine
Переглядів 3,4 тис.8 місяців тому
Short film showing a Coomber Rotary engine built from the drawings in 'Elmer's Engines'. The engine is a really unusual design featuring a double acting cylinder 3/8" bore 1/2" stroke running inside a slightly oval ring. The 'valve timing' is machined into the main bearing. The engine stands just 3 1/2" (9cm) tall. At 40 psi it ran at incredibly high speed with no issues which begs the question...
Tonbridge MES play day 4.3.23

Pre season run for members at Tonbridge Model Engineering Club. Also gave us the opportunity for a Test run of the F7 A unit following a winter rebuild with sound card and smoke generators added. Thought we would try some filming of the engines on the track, if only the electric could keep pace with the steam guys. Enjoy

Now the lockdown restrictions have eased I was finally able to have my niece round to meet her namesake. Can’t believe how well she did given this was also her first drive of a steam engine. Thankfully I have two nieces so have the perfect excuse to get to work on another locomotive.
5" Scamp locomotive first Steaming

First outing of 'Emma' a 5" gauge Scamp built from castings from Reeves & boiler from Steam Technology. A couple of minor items on the to do list such as the sight glass leaking at the top end but all in all very happy for a first run under steam. Also included a couple of shots of the Pearl running in as yet unpainted condition.

Recumbent rail travel in 7 1/4" guage around the mile long circuit at the Eastleigh Lakeside railway near Southampton. somehow more exhilerating in the pouring rain. Many thanks to the good folks at Eastleigh Lakeside for having us to play and to Miniature Railway for organising the event.

    Great little engine - I recently picked up a part built Scamp, the chassis runs on air, it just wants a boiler. How are you finding yours after a few years of running?

    I'm thinking the air compressor you have to haul around would be a deal breaker in most cases.

    be great to see under a strobe light? poor mans "slo mo". now make it a inline four... an " 8cylinder". not so easy, huh? one issue... not very adaptable to multi cylinders. to get more power in a compact unit isnt so easy. the geometry of that ring. the rod, i assume is solid. meaning at TDC the ring is the diameter of the rod length. cool... easy enough? at 90 degrees the rod is lower by the offset distance, so the ring is following the ends of the piston rod... the offset is half the stroke. and somehow that rotating solid rod maintains contact with three points. crankpin and the outer ring. which then has to be a cardioid. two opposed involutes. would be interesting to see with the stroke increased? a simple change to the stroke length alters the geometry of everything. the non-constant linear speed of the bearing rolling along that surface... bearing speeds are a sadly overlooked point of failure. the roller size also affects the geometry of the ring. im sure ive seen a three cylinder version as well... and then theres the other issue, the inherent fault of any engine... forces. leverage. cut the outer ring and roll it out. its just a wedge. inclined plane. in that regard this offers no advantages at all to any other mechanism in use. they all break down to the same basic idea... an inclined plane. levers. doesnt take much force to move the inclined plane and produce a lot of force on the piston... theyre all great compressors. takes a lot of force on the piston to move the wedge though. lousy "expanders". imho, thats the issue with any type of engine. in a way, old beam engines are the best as the force on the piston acts on the arm tangentially, at 90 degrees at all times through the "stroke"... when you see an old pump, the force of the piston is being transmitted directly to the pump rod. it may be at a different ratio due to distances from the fulcrum... but barely any energy is lost in the mechanism itself. as soon as the linear motion becomes "rotational", youre stuck with cranks and eccentrics, swashplates, you name it, everythings been tried... that force the energy to undergo these horrid mechanical conversions... a crank is terrible, at TDC ALL the pressure simply slams through the bearings! at a few degrees after, the conrod and crank arm at a few degrees, again, terrible mechanical advantage on the pin actually creating torque. (try playing with a pair of scissors held wide open?) only at 45 degrees does the force actually start really doing anything useful, and then, most engines are considering opening the exhaust port at 135 or so... i know this is steam/air, but an ICE is basically a steam engine with different valve gear and a carb... they all work the same. great mechanical advantage on the "squeeze" and "blow", terrible on the "suck" and "bang" parts... its inherent, the part of the mechanism. cant avoid it... or can you? how to get a piston to act tangentially on the crankpin whilst expanding for the entire stroke? THATS the key, imho.

    Now make the cylinder stationary, and let the ellipse/ring turn instead, and you´re almost there... The ring, of course, is elliptical on the inside, but cirular on the outside, just as this one here...

    • @paradiselost9946
      @paradiselost9946 8 місяців тому

      and it still has no advantage... it makes a far better air COMPRESSOR than engine. stretch the eccentric out, see it for what it is. an inclined plane. and you need a lot of force pushing down on the piston to create any sideways force on the wedge. whereas if one pulls the wedge, its very easy to create force on the piston... its really good when driven to pump air, really lousy when pumped air is used to drive... and its not limited to this engine design. its inherent in EVERY engine design.

    • @klausbrinck2137
      @klausbrinck2137 8 місяців тому

      @@paradiselost9946 U might be right, I cannot judge it right now, but I never meant to use it as a pump, by inverting the energy-flow. I really just meant, to make the rotor stationary, and the stator rotary... The cylinder/pistons are stationary, and turn the ellipse around, and the ellipse is the engine´s flywheel, which tranfers the power to the wheels... Instead of the cylinder itself turning aound, and tranfering the power itself, as is the case here...

    • @paradiselost9946

      @@klausbrinck2137 i know, and thats the traditional way i have always seen these laid out. "inside out". been quite a few attempts at the same basic design. still doesnt change the bad mechanical disadvantage inherent to all engine designs. and raises a lot of other issues in just the design stage... the "ellipse" is actually a cardioid... two involutes back to back.

    Yet another effort to circumvent the crankshaft patent. The size and complexity compared to a trunk engine kinda explain why it didn't take off as a concept.

      Thanks for taking an interest. In fact you are both right. It is set off center and the internal ring is also an oval - but only slightly. At this scale it is about 80 thou (2mm) wider on the horizontal. It is to do with the acceleration / deceleration of the piston as it goes through the stroke so it can move faster in mid stroke and slows toward each end. Elmer describes in his book how to use compass to draw points at fifteen degree intervals straight onto the material, then suggests to pencil these together by eye and cut by hand. I didn't like the sound of that so drew it up on the iPad and produced an excel of the vectors to cut at two degree intervals, then machined it on a vertical mill fitted with a rotary table. It was a long way to do it but am not working to a deadline so what the heck.

      @@nadfm Thanks. We’re starting a 5 inch garden railway, and have ordered a battery electric loco and a driving truck. The only issue with the driving truck is that the springs are way to soft! It’s very unstable and you sway from side to side whenever you look behind you, and you feel like your going to fall off! Thanks again, I’ll have a look.
