I grew up here , walked to school through the churchyard. I lived in Guiting Grange. Walked to the villave, played with my friends , rode ponies , shopped with my parents , explored with my brothers, atrended the church, harvest festivals, bonfire nights...fantastic place. Even back in the 50's there were many holiday cottages...

My great grandparents lived in Railway Cottage in Chedworth.

The villages in the cotswolds are far from beautiful. Most houses are very ugly. The houses are a nightmare.

Such a shock to the town where I was brought up in 1952 till leaving home for the RAF in 1976, my sister lives near by. Looks as if the house opposite the Black Dog where I was brought up is still there.

South portal? I don't think so! The Thames & Severn Canal crosses England from east to west, not from north to south! This is the "Gothic" western entrance to the disused Sapperton tunnel, as opposed to the "Classical" eastern entrance!

Newent is a market town. It hasn't been classified as a village since the 12 Century. If you visit during the summer months when the Market House is open there are interpretation oars which will explain the history.

When my wife and I were driving Western Ireland nearly 30 years ago, as we passed a sign for a town, my wife would jokingly blurt out; "I got the first 20 letters, did you get the rest?". I think Llanfair PG has got the Gaelic names beat.😉

It's quaint and beautiful but the homes are as old as Henry VIII.

I have been here. Aside from the Arlington Row, there is the Swan Inn (shown in the beginning) which is visited by Japanese tourists because the Japanese Empress stayed here once while visiting the UK.

I love this place, the trout farm is a great place to visit and the people are really friendly. If you are going please be respectful of the people living on Arlington row. When we went several tourists were stood in people's gardens and trespassing on their property and looking through their windows. Not saying everyone will do that but it's easy to get carried away by the fairytale feel of the place and forget that these are peoples homes. Just enjoy at a respectful distance. 😊 sorry to be preachy but one of the owners was getting understandably annoyed and asked them to move.
