A little context for us laypeople on what makes this guy's idea such a good one. Ever hear of "call before you dig?" Where Harry Homeowner should make sure he doesn't drive a shovel into a buried power line? Well imagine you're in a city built over a thousand power lines, gas lines, sewer, water...you get the point. Do you want to cut the trench through that to bury hundreds of meters of fiber? Me either. He developed a way to paint it on the road surface and not cut into all that. Game changer.

Because we do not have a single monolithic national ISP, a lot of these arguments fall flat, or at least hyper-focus on technological arguments. Rather than focus on lowering maintenance cost and increasing speed and longevity as PRIMARY targets, public funding for internet builds should focus on lowering consumer COST, and increasing COMPETITION... Because those focuses will absolutely address the others. And yes, that also means that in many cases, you'll have to "build networks twice" - once to reach the effectively UNserved with minimally viable networks, and again later to bring the UNDERserved up to levels approaching what's available in the most competitive urban areas. Even with BEAD funds, many communities are "too small" for ISPs looking to spend on fiber builds - there's just no way to make a 50 mile fiber run profitable on 5 customer farms without massively overcharging for service. But give those farmers fixed wireless or even Starlink NOW, at affordable prices, and you suddenly make it possible for those communities to expand and welcome new businesses and residents... Who will then look more attractive as a place to build a fiber infrastructure. Just thinking about the operator side of the equation here is a lot like only looking at the specs of computer components. It's all well and good if the latest graphics card from NVIDIA has double the performance of the competition... But there's a real (and usually hidden) cost involved if that card consumes twice the electricity, and generates three times the heat of the competitive offering from AMD. In general, I'd like to see more holistic analyses on these topics, so that we can fairly assess "public value for dollar" - especially when giving all the money to fiber builders may mean many communities will have to wait years to see any results, and several more to be fully built-out. All that lost time is a real cost that should be tracked and compared with faster satellite and fixed wireless solutions, even if it's inconvenient.

It's good to see others who love this job. Keep at it brother. I've been doing the same thing for 4 years down in AZ. Climbed a pole at the edge of a cliff and saw a wild herd of big horn sheep walk by the base of the pole and thought to myself, who else has an office like this.

Hoping that Brightspeed substantially increases the fiber footprint in my area when they take over from CenturyLink. It's very frustrating that currently half of my subdivision has access to FTTP and the other half doesn't.

It's smart to future proof the U.S. broadband infrastructure by insisting on greater fiber optic proliferation. This is also something that can help slow the pace of climate change as more people work and learn remotely.

The bandwidth increases that fiber provides are nice but improvements in latency shouldn't be understated. That's why most video gamers prefer fiber optic connections and are willing to pay handsomely for access to them.
