Channel for Woodworking extension for FreeCAD.
Hello, my name is Darek and I am from Poland. I created this channel at UA-cam because I don't want to overload my GitHUB account with gifs and images for tutorials. I created Woodworking extension for FreeCAD and I will be using this channel to show some features in action :-)
Sorry, for the poor quality movies, but I have slow laptop and I am not able to render high quality mp4.
My woodworking project is available at:

¿Cuando habrá una versión compativle con FreeCAD 1.0 y Assembly?
Woodworking workbench is almost different product with different approach. Here you should rather not start from Sketch -> PartDesign and try to make parametric as much as possible and connected with each other... it is more like direct modeling with non-bound elements... you should rather start from Cubes... regarding FreeCAD 1.0 there are several serious issues so I can't recommend it to use...
so cumbersome... Better IMO to use varsets and define dynamic dimentions there. It doesn't add much complexity during design but pays off quickly when changes are needed
I was thinking about parametrization many years ago, before I have created the woodworking workbench and parametrization limits the design freedom, parametrization is good if you create always the same furniture structure and change only dimensions, but if you add expressions and for example remove part of the furniture, everything collapse... in many cases it is much more quickly and simple to create something from scratch than trying to have parametric everything...
sorry for typo 🙂
thank you for the documentation. I was wondering about holes patterns like system 32. Do you have a video on this?
probably there are many sample usage... but maybe this is good opportunity to make special tutorial on this topic and maybe improve some tools... what holes you mean exactly? for dowels? pilot holes for screws? for shelves pins? what offsets from edges do you use? do you have any sample FreeCAD file? if so please share at github issue or maybe FreeCAD forum... so I will be able to look closer at this problem and maybe improve something...
Bonjour comment télécharger cette version...? Merci
from my github, link in description
Thanks
too bad that your plugin is not working with 1.0. I just started learning freecad and your plugin would be helpful. Hope you'll find a solution soon.
There are no plans to support new FreeCAD until there will be Sketch move possibility. You can open bug at FreeCAD to add setGlobalPlacement function for Sketch or even backward compatibility issue.
@@dprojects.woodworking If they removed the function, they likely have a good reason no? Do they proposed a workaround for your plugin? Not maintaining the plugin with the last version will quickly increase the technical debt and dramatically reduce the users interest. Again, although I know python, I'm new to freecad, it's difficult to help for now.
Thank you
NIce, better and better.. Could you add property for material (for example H1452....) for each piece and put in to the BOM?
Currently you can create folder named H1452 and use g - report type to group pieces by folder name (material, color or anything)... but maybe supporting material field will be good option but I don't want to disturb reports without this field... so this should be rather auto-detection option...
Can we use this addon with v1.0
@@elmasx FreeCAD 1.0 not allow for direct Sketch moving so advanced features related to Sketch move will not be working....
btw I just added new video about meterial usage...
Где звук ????
All videos are without audio
Pozdrowienia, przyjacielu.
I just started learning freecad and I am amazed by what you have done. I wonder how is it possible to get the gcode of these models for cnc? I put the back cover by cutting the mdfs on the side and bottom by 9mm. can sketchup be used like woodwop or cabinetsense. Thank you very much!!
sketchup is nowhere near any of cad software but is capable of executing very complex furniture as well. You can export drawings in dxf for cnc posprocessing. It takes time to learn the workflow which will be different for everyone. You can see OpenCutlist and there is also a nice plugin ABF but I havent used it much.
Thanks. The Woodworking workbench creates Cube and Pad objects, normal FreeCAD objects, so if FreeCAD is able to create CNC code for its objects this should be possible, as far as I know at FreeCAd forum, there are successful people with CNC...
You might be able to import some of this into the sheet metal work bench to get a flat unfolded view for CNC. That, or if you are strictly working with square panels, you can export the cut list from the woodworking bench which should have your shapes in it. Idk how to get that into your CNC software, but I imagine it wouldn't be too bad.
Excellent workbench with a lot of functionality. But please add some voice to your videos. It would be much more invormativ.
Could you please share how to add any screw or similar object into the project to have it ready to be linked like you do have in the video? Thx in advance!
honestly its very painful to follow your mouse cursor and what you are doing in all these woodworking videos. Audio explaining what you a doing is needed
Thanks for all your tutorials!
It would've been much easier to understand if you would add a voice on this video! now, it is very difficult to follow.
Please explain what you are doing! really not helping the beginners!!!
The good video freeCAD
Thanks for this video FreeCAD
GENIALNA tematyka, to jest to czego szukałem aby w domu zrobić sobie proste meble. :) Możemy porozmawiać prywatnie?
Great ! it helps to see the woodworking workbench in action. Do you have sound with it ? "i click this icon and why" just not to have to pause the video so often... thanks alot anyway !
I very much enjoy your videos and I find them helpful. Unfortunately, they are difficult to follow, for several reasons. While adding a voice-over may not be feasible, I would appreciate it if you would move a bit slower when recording videos. I would also appreciate it if you changed the arrow to make it easier to track. Making it larger and changing the color to something more visible would be greatly helpful. Thank you for taking these ideas into consideratioln.
Thank you for your feedback, I always forget to make things slower. I can't add voice right now but I will try to remember to make it more informative.
I am new to FreeCAD and was happy to learn of your Woodworking benchtop since I want to use FreeCAD for planning woodworking projects. I see that this has dowel and biscuit capability built in. Does the benchtop also include loose tenons and pocket holes? If not, are planning on adding these capabilities? I would greatly appreciate it if you did. Have a great evening!
The pocket holes are described here: github.com/dprojects/Woodworking/tree/master/Docs#pocket-holes---invisible-connections regarding loose tenons, they are not directly supported but I guess you can use magicJoints and adjust the hole size later github.com/dprojects/Woodworking/tree/master/Docs#magicjoints
After coming from Blender, FreeCAD feels so unintuitive. You need Magic to move things around 😀 because there is no G for grabbing and snapping to other parts, you need to know which buttons to click, and don't even try to double-click stuff because then you will get totally lost in some Tasks mode...
you can set Blender keys in right bottom status bar, if you don't have it already
This all looks promising, but man I am unsure what is going on. Maybe some clear tutorial for noobs? I already know the part design/part workbenches, and some basic arch, and I *could* use them for furniture, but from reading description, this workbench is offering a lot of perks. Sadly, I can't find any good introductory video on yt for it.
you need to practice and practice, play with it and have fun, just test and don't hesitate to ask... read docs... there is nothing difficult, I guess
Another requirement that I'm trying to do in Freecad is to assemble modules so that I can change the height, width and depth, thickness of the wood and it remains in just one piece, something automatic would be interesting.
it is non-bounding modeling, something different than PartDesign...
@@dprojects.woodworking I used to do projects in a program called promob, when this happens, it will be a revolution.
very good. Can I create those parametric panels with waves? People generally use it in home theaters.
I don't know what you mean by panels with waves? you mean decoration applied at panel? if you will clone whole LinkGroup container there can be anything inside the container...

That's perfect, I remember a few times using the panelToPad function and all expressions gone and had to rewrite them, now they are preserved, very nice.
Yes 🙂

Hello, is the workbench still not available in the addon manager? Icons like a lot :) And one more question are you somehow related to the furniture industry? Have you used specialized programs for furniture design?
I don't use add-on manager and I am not responsible for its repository content, so I am not able to tell what is there. I made code fix but I don't know if this help or not. You need to ask the FreeCAD community about it or test or your own. I am not from furniture industry, I am Software Engineer, related to the IT sector. Furniture making and woodworking in general is only my hobby. I wanted to have BOM list to order chipboard, this is how this project started. I was trying SketchUp I guess and maybe some other, I don't remember but I wasn't able to generate simple BOM list there, with exact columns order and naming. So I created my own script at FreeCAD.
Hey just found this workbench the other day. It is very impressive! I havn't spent much time using the grain direction tools, I'm assuming it is intended to optimize usage of sheet goods, but is it supposed to interact at all with your setTextures tool? I was trying to make a hardwood board have a realistic grain wrap using the autofit drop down menu but couldn't find anything I liked. Maybe if you were able to assign grain direction to a texture, it would give you more control over the layout via the grain direction tools.
Personally, I don't use it, because I play with chipboards not raw wood. Grain direction feature was requested at the FreeCAD forum. It is not connected with textures, but you can add description with textures on, the grain direction marker is separate object. Please open issue at github and describe your goal, so maybe I will be able to help you somehow. Thanks!
Just discovered your Workbench and videos... Really great !!! I'm very greatfull, Thank You very much.
My project is just finished (with Partdesign WB) and i was looking for some idea to get a list of all parts. Seeing how fast you created these dado joints makes me regret not having found your video earlier and of course this Super workbench of yours. Really great for me. When typing "Woodworking , Freecad" i always ended up with the same videos, nice but... So I thank you Very Much for your work on both the video and the workbench. (Woodwork starts with W ; maybe you should have called it "A woodworking" to be on top😉)
Great Tool !! is there the possibility to implement also the Lamello Biscuit ?
yes, I plan to do this soon.
excelent work!
poderia ter um tutorial de como instalar em video
Very nice! Can I generate the cut list from imported STL files? When I try it, it create an empty spreadsheet 😢
I am trying to follow the video, everything is fine until I am pressing the button create Tenon and Mortise. Nothing happens, nothing is created. The only diffence I have is the my Anchor is 1/0 where the Anchor in the video is 1/5 - and I don't know how to change this. The +/ - button will delete the set settings. Has anybody a glue what my fault could be? Best regards, Moritz.
PS: I am using Freecad 0.20.1
if you have 1/0 anchors it probably means the object isn't recognized correctly. Make sure the object is Cube or PartDesign supported object eg. Pad, Chamfer, Thickness,... Also you can open issue and attach file sample with your object or ask other folks at FreeCAD forum
very good work. How i make a tech draw page with this workbench? thanks.
You need to switch to TechDraw workbench. There is not special icon, I am not into duplicate icons that already exists at other default workbenches. You can generate BOM report so the TechDraw page will be created automatically.
@@dprojects.woodworking thanks, i go try. i post a new video working with the workbench woodworking. :D
Nice. Thanks for showing. There seems to be no audio. Something wrong on my computer or intentional?
no your computer is fine, there is no voice at all, maybe in the future I will decide to record tutorial or something like that
how i can how make the techdraw with this workbench? if you can make a video, i am so grateful, thanks.
Hi! Thanks for sharing this content. I did not know Freecad had this workbench, as a hobbies woodworker it seems to be very useful. I will give it a try. Since it seems you are the developer thanks again for taking the time to build this workbench!
Thank you for kind words. If you find something that can be changed you can open issue at github, you have fresh eye so all comments welcome.
There are many useful features in the workbench. When can this workbench be seen in addon maneger?
I am not responsible for FreeCAD repository.
Well, I found the angle and screw for this practice, but I'm stumped at how you changed the dowels into drill bits. It appears that you select one of the dowels and then click on the "drill bit from edge hole" tool and all of the dowels change into drill bits. When I do this I get the edge2drillbit help pop-up and no drill bits are created. I'm sure I'm missing a mouse click or two. Can you explain how you are doing the exchange? I can create the drill bits from the hole edge, but changing the dowels has me stumped.
see this: github.com/dprojects/Woodworking/tree/master/Docs#realistic-screws-and-angles
This is one of your harder to follow videos, but I plan to try it if I figure out where you get the angles.
I watched the whole thing and followed along slowly. Difficult at times to understand because the screen recording seems rather unsmooth. It jerks a lot with missing frames. But still the presentation helped me understand the Woodworking Workbench basics. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for kind words.
Thanks for the video. This is the method that I've been trying, but was having trouble copying the sketch. This is just what I needed.
Well turns out my problem wasn't with the sketch. While using the majicjoints tool I didn't adjust the step and the depth according to my panel's thickness. This led to the tenons being too long. This leads to a question. If I make a mistake like that and need to remake the tenons shorter or longer, can it be done without starting over?
I'm trying to model a finger joint. I created a sketch for the size of the fingers and I can create the mortises along the face of the board using the magic joint tool. Do I need to create the mortise on the other panel to fit or is there a tool I'm missing to create finger joints?
Finger joint is simple connection type, so it can be done with many ways. You can create Sketch but also you can create simple Cube box and copy it along the edge, next cut them all to create mortises. Is up to you what way you choose. Maybe I will make video for it.
Here is video about finger joints: ua-cam.com/video/BStLJlDEnCY/v-deo.html
Good video, thank you. I can't remember if you did this in the last one I watched (beginner table video) but it helped a LOT for following the process in this one when you let the tooltip pop up mousing over the icon.
