Strummers and Dreamers is a weekly folk/roots radio program on Cambridge 105 Radio with host Les Ray in Cambridge, UK. On a recent program, Annie Gallup discussed three tracks from her new album, Did you Hear the Red-Winged blackbird?" for which I wrote the lyrics. My friend and colleague Annie Gallup recently spoke to Jim Marino, who's program, "Freewheeling Folk" is a weekly fixture on CFMU FM out of Hamilton, Ontario. The two discussed our collaborative album, "Did You Hear the Red-Winged Blackbird," in which Annie set a dozen of my poems to music. They also play three tracks from the album. In an evolutionary sense, I think we are hardwired to be fascist, and even good people with good intentions can easily be seduced by power once they have had a taste of it. How many revolutionaries fought the good fight to overthrow tyranny, only to become the thing they most despised? When I study what happened to the citizens of Germany in WWII, what happened in Cambodia under Pol Pot, Chile ...

Another wonderful take on one of my poems by the immensely talented Annie Gallup. This is a rebuttal to Dylan Thomas’ “Do Not Go Gentle.” What is the point of going out kicking and screaming? It lacks dignity and seems an awful way to leave the party. I would much rather make peace with death and accept the inevitable, and hope my final moments are serene ones. Album notes for "Did You Hear the...

Annie Gallup's "Did You Hear the Red-Winged Blackbird?" is a collection of a dozen of my poems, which she has set to music. I have no idea where this one came from. I suppose I was feeling wistful and I just put my pencil to work. Sometimes when I write, I really don’t know what I will be saying, but I may be experiencing joy, sorrow, regret, any range of emotions, and I just start writing. I a...

From Annie Gallup's new album (Did You Hear the Red-Winged Blackbird?) in which she has set my poetry to music . I grew in the small town of Dalhousie, New Brunswick, in eastern Canada, a beautiful area and a wonderful community. I did not find out until many years after I had left home that Catholic priests had been molesting countless boys, many of them my close friends, one of them, my broth...
Immortality by Annie Gallup (Lyrics by Bob Jensen)

From "Did You Hear the Red-Winged Blackbird?" Annie Gallup's take on my poem, "Immortality." So many times I have heard about people being immortalized for their art, their conquests, their politics, and it always strikes me as naive. What is a hundred years, a thousand years, compared to the endless pit of eternity? Even the giant galaxy we inhabit will in the fullness of time be erased from a...

From Annie Gallup's CD "Did You Hear the Red-Winged Blackbird?" in which she set a dozen of my poems to music. Who at some point in his life has not thought, boy, if I had known then what I know now, or wished he could go back and give his younger self some advice. I know I sure have. I moved to Montreal, a city I have always loved, in June of 2023 and it’s only grown more beautiful over the years. I wrote this poem just as it happened. The summer was swelteringly hot, and one day I was at Parc Jarry writing next to the pond when I noticed two young girls experiencing the thrill of a summer love. I wish they could hear what Annie did with my little poem. This song is from An...

Hi Bob. Thanks for the reply. The only book l wrote was my Master’s dissertation on “Human Rights Violations at Sea”. Sold 3 copies, but l don’t think that’s what you mean. Stomping Tom Connors, eh! I think just about everyone else in the Maritimes did. You, me and Stomping Tom. All the quality people. Cook was called Johnny something. Used to know it until quite recently. Did you know l got scurvy on that ship. I.e. infected gums? My inspections were for nothing. I have tons of pics of the old ‘Wood, if you should need them. D you have any more? Cheers. Colin

Jesus - scurvy. The cook was an old drunk from Newfoundland. He stole a bottle of tequila from me one time, and I was very pleased to see him sick as a dog next day, having drunk the entire quart. I can't remember his name, but I think I have a photo of him somewhere. I will email you right now. If you have a lot of photos, maybe try sending them to me via Wetransfer.com. Very easy to use.

Hi Bob. I’ll try to dig out a photo from those days, if l can attach it to this post. Yes, looking at the pics on your other songs l think l do recall you, but don’t recall checking on your seasickness,. Thank you for the kind comment. The crew’s welfare was always a priority of mine. Not much l could do to make the ‘’Wood a more comfortable berth for everyone. For me it was a steep learning curve. Seasickness always hit me if l’d been away for a month & we’d sail into heavy seas. You are right. I went to the U.K. for 2 years to sit my Deep Sea Masters certificate and take a shipping management course. How long were you on her? She was an abortion that should have been scrapped decades before. After her, ship-handling on any other ship was a doddle. Tried to attach a photo of me but it didn’t work. Will have to wait until you e-mail me. I’m 73 now and living in Inuvik, NT. Where are you these days? All the best, Colin

Sorry - I have been meaning to email you but I have been busy. I will try to do that in the next little while. I have some amazing photos. My "cabin" looked more like a corner of the engine room. It was the about the dumpiest place I ever hung my hat in, and that's saying a lot after several years of hitchhiking around with no money. I was only on the Irivingwood for a few months and then transferred to the 1060.

Great song. Was Skipper on her 1980-81. A floating bomb, but great crews from all over the Maritimes. Mostly did the Newfie Coast. Loved the outports. Love-hate relationship with the ship. All gone now. Cod, fish plants, fishing boats, storage tanks and the ships which took them oil to power it all. A whole way of life lost.

Thank you. I believe you were my captain. My captain on the Wood, I think, was English. He had been away from sea, studying to get his master's ticket, or whatever you call it. I had been very seasick as it was my first time at sea, and the captain was as well, as he had been off the water for some time. Does that sound like you?

@@bobjensen9010 Hi Bob. Some of it sounds like me, l think most of the Captains were British. There was Bill Sitwell, who was the son of an aristocratic family, the Sitwells. He was very tall, posh and upper crust. Another was Jim something (Kerr?)He was on board when she was almost cut in half by the Yankee Clipper. I joined her as my first Captains’ job with only two hours notice. l like to think l remember all the crews l sailed with, but don’t remember you.. Do you still have your discharge book? It will tell you the dates in there. E-mail me at ‘irvingwood@icloud.com’ (yes, l use it as my e-mail address). I have written a lot about her. Regards. Colin Smith

Hi again Bob. My discharge book tells l was on her from 18th August, 1980 to July 7th, 1981, so it fits well with your dates. Were you a seaman?Who do you remember? John Healy the Cargo Mate, Jim Quinn Chief Mate, the Gillis brothers, Jerome & Jonny. Dennis the pump man? You are right. I was in Plymouth for two years studying for my Master’s Foreign-Going and a Shipping Management Course. I don’t remember being seasick, but then l’d want to forget it.

I remember the first mate, the old Scotsman, and also the cook, an old drunk from Newfoundland. I have photos of some of the crew somewhere. Something I distinctly remember you telling me was that you suffered from sea-sickness. I was very sick shortly after we put to sea from Saint John and you were very kind. Thank you for your kindness. The courage is yours, not mine. It is easy for me to speak out. For the victims I know, it is almost impossible to do so. I have witnessed them completely fall apart at the mere mention of what happened to them. So for my friends and family who were molested, beaten, threatened and humiliated, I will try in my way to be at least some kind of voice for them. It is my sincere hope that some of the people who knew what was going on and failed to act at the time might do so now. Simply having the truth be made known contributes to the long and arduous process of healing. Those people have a second chance to help right an old wrong.

The church made a feeble, half hearted attempt to account, but in the end they protected the priests again. They were given a list of names of offending priests by Michel Bastarache and they did not make it public nor was it given to the police, as is mandatory under the NB Family Services Act. That is a disgrace. They really hit a new low though, when they attempted to have their insurer compensate them for the money they paid out for the crimes of serial pedophiles and rapists. They sued the insurance company and lost. How utterly bankrupt of basic humanity would you have to be to enable these child rapes, protect the rapists, and then try to make your insurance company foot the bill? I believe that there are still pedophile priests in NB who have congregations.
