Short Bed Lathe Restauration - Buying a small lathe - Cabiati Mario TPR1 Part 1
Hello and welcome to this video,
In 2019 I bought this small short bed lathe.
This video will be the prologue to more upcoming videos, showing you how I made the support frame that will hold the lathe from now on. This makes moving the lathe and working on it, a lot easier.
Stay tuned for the upcoming videos where we will take a look at what this thing actually is, inspect the overall condition and start repairing and restoring it.
Thanks for watching and until next time!

MOORE Pattern Scraping a Straight Edge
Переглядів 42 тис.2 роки тому
Hello and welcome, in this video I'm showing you how I handscraped this cast iron straightedge. I'm showing you all the steps, from rough scraping to finish scraping. I chose to use the MOORE scraping pattern for the finish passes, as it leaves the most appealing touch to the straightedge, but also reduces the amount of burrs created by the scraping. I am by no means an expert, but I think the ...

Hand Scraping a Surface Plate to Sub 5 Micron / A - Grade Flatness
Переглядів 218 тис.2 роки тому
Hello and welcome, in this video I'm showing you how I handscraped my steel surface plate to a flatness of less than 5 microns (0,2 thou). It ended up beeing somewhere inbetween 3 and 4 microns of flatness. That's 0,003-0,004mm. So not that much. All scraping was done by hand. Roughing with a 30mm/25mm carbide blade with 140mm radius. Finer scraping was done with a 25mm carbide blade and 90mm r...

Beginner stick / TIG welding project - DEAD BLOW HAMMER BUILD FROM SKETCH

This is how I made four dead blow hammers out of some 1" steel pipe. This can be seen as some kind of an beginner project, although it's not a super easy one! Welding tubes with this small diameter can be very tricky. So take your time and practise. As shown you can use stickwelding (SMAW / 111) as well as TIG (141) to weld these tubes. I used my KEMPPI Minarc 180 evo. I ran these 3,2mm rutile/...

    Здравствуйте. Хорошая работа. Каким камнем пользуетесь для снятия вершин после шабера (время 13.16 , 20.38 ). В книгах пишут камень арканзас но не указали какой зернистости. Я для этой цели использую обойму от подшипника.

    WD-40 ölt/schmiert nicht. Es ist prima zum saubermachen (Lösemittel sei dank), aber mehr auch nicht. So ist es also richtig dass du Balistol zur Konservierung/Pflege nimmst. Und schade dass man genau die spannendeste Stellen nicht sieht, wo du den Spannstift entfernst bzw. wieder einsetzt! :D

    The surface plate (granite) is smaller than the piece you doing. I'm new to this, so I ask if it would be safe put a larger piece on a smaller reference surface. If it is, how to do it safely? The larger piece I intend to do in the future is a ML Myford bed (about 1 meter length). Thanks in advance!!

    • @buildfromsketch8102
      @buildfromsketch8102 12 днів тому

      Hey there! The granite plate i used is a little bit bigger than the plate i scraped. Generally, you can scrape a larger surface with a smaller reference, but your result will be less accurate. You can move the reference in overlapping intervals and also use a micron indicator on the reference, to double check for deviations.

    Never done any of this (to speak of), but I found another guy who scraped steel. He suggested a totally different tool geometry, since the blade tend to dig in on steel. Yours look very conventional though, as used on cast Iron? Beautiful video though, I will watch it again!

    • @buildfromsketch8102
      @buildfromsketch8102 22 дні тому

      Yes, i found that video as well, after I made this plate. He is completely right and his tool geometry is definitely better. I personally didn't experience the work hardening as a big thing. I am sure it reduced tool life a bit, but it wasn't unbearable. I also talked to a guy who does a lot of professional scraping, and he said he just runs with a 0 degree angle. So yeah, it's a thing, but nothing to overthink actually.

      Machinist use those plates as a reference point to measure and test parts. They are ground within a curtain tolerance with a machine but it can also be done by hand as seen here. Scraping metal like this can also help the metal hold lubricants better in situations where two machined surfaces meet

    It’s more common in the US, home of the “freedom units” to show the leading zeros in a decimal. Representing as .000591. In a U.S. machine shop we’d say “six tenths” rounding up as it is understood to be ten thousandths of an inch since we never have tolerances in actual tenths of an inch. .0006” doesn’t seem great for a surface plate tbh… my Swiss machines easily hold .0001-.0002” and that’s cutting not grinding. Granite is best for a surface plate.

      Thanks! :) This is my daily shop plate that I use for lower precision measurements of small and medium parts, as well as a marking plate for scraping lines onto workpieces, for example to precisely mark holes I want to drill into stuff :) I made it, so i don't risk damaging my granite plate or wearing it out. But for really high precision measurements, I still use the granite plate from time to time.
