Those are saxophones. Great reaction. 😂 I’m a big free jazz lover personally. Funny enough, none of the instruments (except the saxophones) were improvised. They were all tightly structured and notated. But yes, the free jazz influence is strong. Even though you don’t like it, at least you’re able to give more knowledgeable commentary on this album, than any other reaction I’ve witnessed. No one else ever discusses free jazz when reacting to this album, and it always bothers me when people treat this album like it came out of a vacuum. And I actually have mad respect for Primus. Les Claypool is insanely talented. But you’d be surprised how influential this “Trout Mask Replica” album was on punk rockers. Johnny Rotten (real name John Lydon) from The Sex Pistols had this to say about the fish album: "It was anti-music in the most interesting and insane way ... all the bum notes I was being told off for by the teachers were finally being released by well-known artists. That was my confirmation. From then on, there was room for everything." And many new wave artists like Talking Heads were really influenced by this album’s riffs.
@psychedelicpiper999 omg was it a sax?? Really? I did not catch it. I swear it was played to unique. The album was truly a masterpiece and the musicianship was 100/100 and the instrumentalists were great. Ya it was hard tbh to listen to it😂but i think thats mostly cause i dont like jazz in general. So anything related to jazz is hard to listen 😂😂 It sure was an interesting album and tbh i think more musician should know and study the techniques used in this album. Its a whole new take and prospective on fusion

Yeah, unfortunately, this is just how stereo mixes were back in the day. Up to 1968, you could at least hunt down a mono mix. And some albums by 1969 were very well-mixed professionally in stereo, like Led Zeppelin’s debut. But by and large, stereo was still primarily mixed for speakers, and not headphones. The theory was that hard-panned instruments allowed for maximum fidelity preservation. And unfortunately centered drums was a rare occurrence. This is why I can’t listen to The Beatles’ original stereo mixes pre-White Album, nor Pink Floyd’s debut album in stereo. It just sounds absolutely awful. Mono all the way. This album was recorded and released in 1970, on a small independent label in Texas. Apparently it was recorded in the best studio in Texas at the time, but it was still 1970, and the old way of doing stereo mixes was still fairly common, depending on the artist and the album. I think by 1973, stereo mixes were beginning to sound more and more modern.
@psychedelicpiper999 I dont think they ever thought that audio technology will be where it is today. Their choices does make sense for their time, but unfortunately for us, especially for me, its a personal hell😂
Yeah also in the 60s people would hard pan because they wanted people to notice the difference of stereo and how immersive it could be, so that's why a lot of songs have weird mixing from back then.
l love this album. That live version of “Worried Worried” with the Donald Trump diss was very surprising. 😂 Syd Barrett also made the transition to singer-songwriter psychedelic folk rock on his first solo album.
@@psychedelicpiper999 it really took me by so much surprise

So funny that Zammuto came up for you and I just happened to think of them today. Glad you got to see the vinyl notching Nick did. He's a really clever guy. He's better known as half of The Books, who I love and *might* be a weirder project. Certainly "Cold Freezing Night" is a crazy song. But I'd agree, Zammuto and The Books are both unique but not exactly weird.

Pink Floyd is hella weird if you listen to their early albums, especially the Syd Barrett era. “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” is the quintessential psychedelic rock album. Syd Barrett (the original guitarist and songwriter of the band) was the Thelonious Monk of guitar. “Interstellar Overdrive” off the “Piper” album is as weird as weird can be. Even the “Ummagumma” album with David Gilmour on the album was very weird, because they were still trying to emulate Syd Barrett’s style. Flaming Lips has some weird material, too, but I don’t listen to them much.
Early Pink Floyd was a mix of commercial Beatlesy pop, and really weird experimental freak-out proto-punk proto-industrial noise music. The avant-garde noise band AMM and free jazz musicians Ornette Coleman and Sun Ra were among Syd Barrett’s influences.
@psychedelicpiper999 true true. But ive always admired how pink floyd commercialised their weirdness. They succeeded on another level compared to other psychedelic bands.
You reviewed Animal Collective’s most commercial material. Their weirdest albums would be “Ark” (also known as “Here Comes the Indian), “Danse Manatee”, “Centipede Hz”, among others.
Well “Centipede Hz” is more weird in terms of the layered maximalist production, but the other 2 are weird in terms of the song structures and noisy collage instrumentals. (I would avoid “Danse Manatee” if you are sensitive to high-pitched frequencies.) The “Transverse Temporal Gyrus” EP is really weird, too.
ok i shall review these albums too thwn😂
@@roya5280 While I acknowledge there’s many faux weird artists that aren’t really weird at all, they’re just commodifying the aesthetic for the sake of popularity; there’s also quite a number of legitimately weird artists who’ve also managed to release commercially accessible music. Animal Collective are the latter. They’ve done avant-garde noise rock albums, they’ve done freak folk, they’ve done electronic pop, and they’ve done varying flavors of psychedelic rock. All of them share a weirdness. Even “Merriweather Post Pavilion” has touches of weird on the album, despite being very poppy and commercially accessible. Although I’ll admit their latest string of albums are their most normal releases to-date, and I don’t find them very interesting. Their best work, by far, is the string of albums they released from 2000-2012.
Yes, thats true. Weird does fall into a more opinion-based thing. If the mass loves it, even tho it has weird elements, it will not be "weird" to most people. I believe this is what makes it tricky. for me, its when i want to rip my ears off :DD
@@roya5280 Animal Collective had one popular album that got big with the Pitchfork crowd, but not big enough for the Grammy’s. Actually, there were technically a series of them. Best you just stick to the album recommendations I made in the beginning for their weirdest work.
Also, you somehow avoided Captain Beefheart’s weirdest material. Try “Trout Mask Replica” (not on Spotify). That puts him on a weird scale of 11/10. 😂 But I still love his music.
Like seriously, from the get-go, the opening track “Frownland”is one of the most extreme pieces of music out there. It makes Primus sound like Coldplay. I always felt like Primus were a more commercial take on Captain Beefheart and The Residents (another weird band). It’s true, though, that Beefheart had plenty of commercial material himself. But Captain Beefheart’s most experimental music was very polytonal and dissonant, very heavily influenced by free jazz and Stravinsky’s later pieces.
Okay okay that sounds interesting. I will 100% have another go at captain beefheart. Thank you so much for the suggestion
@@roya5280It’s kinda funny how even with “Doc at the Radar Station”, “Shiny Beast” and “Lick My Decals Off, Baby”, you randomly ended up choosing the more accessible tracks on the album. Because those albums have plenty of weirdness, too. But maybe this is a good thing. Most people just look up the opening track on “Trout Mask Replica”, and entirely dismiss Beefheart’s work. You probably wouldn’t have been able to appreciate him otherwise. And even “Trout Mask Replica” has some more accessible moments, but very few. Anyway, “Trout Mask Replica” is considered his magnum opus.
@@psychedelicpiper999i will 100% listen to that album. I did find beefheart a bit, but i what enjoyed how he was able to use his weirdness in a more commercial and positive way. I legit did not want to rip my ears out with him, even tho he does the same thing as the other psychedelic weird artists i reviewed
@@roya5280 I’m not sure you’ll be able to get through the entire album. 😂 It’s very long, and it’s also very challenging.
The vocal panning was actually not a creative decision. Stereo mixes back in the 1960’s were commonly done like that. Bands like The Beatles, Pink Floyd (in the 60’s), Cream, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, etc. had stereo mixes like that, too. The mono mixes (same sound coming out of both speakers) was actually the most common format of the 60’s, and the mix that the artist paid attention to the most. We didn’t start to get more modern, balanced stereo mixes until 1969. Anything before 1968, you definitely want the mono mixes for the best experience. But Spotify doesn’t always have them.

damn shocked to see someone reacting to this band, they started in 1966 and were part of the psychedelic scene but then later moved on to the post-punk scene in the late 70s, their second album sounds more akin to post-punk even though it came out in 1968. The "sonic boom remaster" is just a remaster of their 1967 album made by one of the guitarists in Spacemen 3 who were big fans of the band. It's a confusing discog to go through, all their albums used to be on spotify but they got removed, they changed their name because of a lawsuit by crayola, so there's "Red Crayola" and "Red Krayola" on different spotify pages. The comparisons to Beefheart or krautrock like CAN is interesting because these guys predated that stuff. They were very ahead of the times. I highly recommend listening to "Corky's Debt to His Father", the solo album of the lead singer, it was influential to Neutral Milk Hotel and is the most "normal" sounding record he ever did. If you want to hear weird stuff they made listen to their first album "Parable of Arable Land" it's half somewhat normal songs and half noise and sound collage pieces.
@kelechi_77 thank you do much for the info on the " Sonic Boom " the Red Krayola thing was pretty confusing to me, so that is cleared up😂 thanks. I will def check them out and react to them for another Weird Music Wednesday. Thank u so much
Beefheart was concurrent with the Red Crayola. Remember Beefheart and His Magic Band formed in the mid-1960’s, and their first album was released the same year as Red Crayola’s first album. But yeah, all good stuff.
@@psychedelicpiper999 Red Crayola debuted their first album before Beefheart, they still predated him. And yeah Beefheart had a few singles in 1966, but they sound nothing like his later avant-rock stuff.
@@kelechi_77 They both released their first album in June 1967. I don’t know the exact day, but this seems to be splitting hairs.
@@psychedelicpiper999 Still Beefheart on his first album hadn't gone into real avant-garde territory outside of Electricity and the closing track, still think Red Crayola predated his efforts on Trout Mask and Strictly Personal.
