PANASONIC WhisperValue DC Exhaust Fan Installation Walkthrough
As I home performance contractor, I am qualified to teach you how to install this Panasonic WhisperValue DC bathroom exhaust fan (model FV-0510VS1).
BGE and Pepco (Maryland Utility Company) standards require us to measure exhaust ventilation rates and determine where each exhaust fan in a residential house terminates. To maintain indoor air quality, we must also manage new fan installs and airflow at the end of home performance projects. So, we are around this stuff every day.
1. Most exhaust fans installed in homes vent moisture directly into the attic
--This causes mold
--This accelerates the age of the roof
--This degrades existing insulation
2. Bathroom exhaust fan ducts running through an attic can "sweat" during extreme seasonal weather events if not insulated properly
3. Different fan models exhaust different amounts of air per minute, and if an exhaust fan is making noise, that does not mean it is working right
4. Incorrectly installed fans can act as gateways to the attic, increasing energy bills
5. A bathroom exhaust fan is essential for indoor air quality and should be installed correctly!

3 Building Science Principles Every Homeowner Should Know
That appeared to be 2 feet of fiberglass insulation backed with foil as a radient barrier. It even had vent chutes installed the entire length up. That's absolutely perfect. The only problem was that some fell off in ONE section, which could have been fixed in ten minutes almost for free. Why would that need full removal and replacement? Also, I noticed the chutes removed prior to foam installation, how does that breathe now?
I fell through
You did not follow instructions
Do you work in Virginia or can you refer a company that does this same type of work?
Hello! Thank you for stopping by! I do not work in VA. Try Home Energy Medics
I’d love a video on your internal wetting system
Definitely. I have some footage. Anything in particular? Do you want to see it in action?
👌👌👌
Very nice
Great video. Very informative. Able to share the estimated cost of a project like this?
Thank you! Cost is going to depend on the total area you need insulated and labor. What I did do is paste two links in the description for what materials you would need to cost up and how much area they cover. If you choose to buy anything, I might make a few bucks from Amazon, but you can use the links and material and price guidance.
This is one of the last air sealing projects in my house and was shocked at what I found. Started working on my rim joist this week, which goes back twenty inches, due to the overhang in front of the house. Who ever owned the house before or the builder decided that stuffing R-13 paper backed fiberglass insulation in the space was a good solution for air leakage in the area. I started on it yesterday afternoon by pulling out all the disintegrating insulation and cleaning out the bays. I planned this morning to use a 24" great stuff spray foam gun on the back at the seams to seal it up, before using inch and half foam blocks and Mineral wool insulation. I didn't notice it yesterday afternoon because the sun was on the other side of the house at the time, but this morning I couldn't believe what I was looking at, Daylight coming though the back of my rim joists. Every single bay three out of the four sides on the back panel had daylight coming through the seams. I couldn't understand why the marble windowsills above the overhang were always ice cold in the winter, I do now. I think my heating bills this winter are going to drop a lot, once I'm done with this project.
Amazing report! You are absolutely going to benefit from getting this done! I am eager to hear how things play out! Please check back in!
“And the foyer will be much more comfortable this winter” for all the people who can’t hear. It’s insulating/stopped the heat from leaking out of your house in case this isn’t clear either.
What?
What what?
Did we just make an insulation trap door?
We need a 3in gap below the floor for termite inspections in NC
I know exactly how much air leaks out of my basement. Nothing I don't have a basement😂
I can’t hear you. “And the foyer will be much….”
oooh, sorry! ...more comfortable this winter!
I changed my motor to blow into the house. The outside exhaust was letting in to much heat or could. I packed it with insulation and sealed it off. Made a huge difference!
Nice work! So you opted for the recirculating version. I like mine to vent outside so I can get extra moisture out (summer mainly) or air out the kitchen if I burn something. I also find that in the summer, with the fan running on low while cooking, it does not get as hot in my kitchen.
Looks like a mobile home
single family
Also where were they feeling the uncomfortable temperature at the 1st or 2nd floor ?
The were having trouble on the first floor, particularly in a room on the front of the home (adjacent to the overhang on the right when facing the house).
What is the silver pipe?
Hello, the silver pipe in the overhang is an HVAC supply duct.
Had a double wide house. Everytime the furnace heating came on cool air from the basement would come heavily up the stairwell from the basement didn t make sense.
living amongst physics at work - you were inside the STACK EFFECT
@homeairleakagetest I have always been a figure it out and Mcguyver kind of person. Many times, I gave that Alot of thought, airflow other than the obvious I never touched. Other than a curtain or keeping the door shut which had to be watched for the cats, liter being in the basement, was about it for solutions. Thanks
If interested, watch the related video to see several leakage places up close!
What about when it’s time to replace the fan assembly? Cut the foam away with a razor knife?
@@DownRange02 Exactly. Cuts like butter.
Check out the related vid to see the hole up close.
Question- how do the work effect the heating and air conditioning costs? Clearly the air sealing was great and the original windows weren’t leaking that badly, but what about the u value dollars saved because of the new Windows. I suspect not that much. Please enlighten me on these questions. Respectfully
Hello! Thank you for stopping by! Looking solely at the air leakage modeling, when I calculate the projected savings before windows compared to with windows, it appears that the air sealing leads to approximately 10x more energy savings. Now, don't be misled here either. We are talking about energy savings of around $1000 with air sealing and $1100 with air sealing and windows. Comfort will be the bigger benefit as far as impact on your life.
Actually attic fans are to help so your attic doesn’t catch on fire it does help a little bit cool it down and it helps with moisture
Or better yet just take care of your exhaust fan keep it clean and oil the motor with 3in1 oil and it will work fine
I respectfully disagree. Many builder grade fans don’t get the job done. Lubed or not…
what exactly are u using to plug the holes????
They have little louvered covers in different diameters to insert.
what's the best one u recommend???😊😊
Vermiculite lol
The foam around the outside edge is doing nothing. The batt is still coming into contact with the wood, which WILL mold.
That is incorrect. The foam is sealing the area from outside air. The outside air is what will cause mold (if conditions are right). The batt slows heat transfer. The method you see is a best practice. Thank you for your contribution!
@@homeairleakagetest Nope sorry that is not correct. It is the contact with the wood that causes the mold. You HAVE to have a vapor barrier between the wood and the batt. It will absolutely mold. The best practice is to either completely fill the joist area with spray foam, or cut foam board and seal it with canned spray foam. Either or, but thats it.
Maybe where you live. Not in Maryland. That doesn’t make any sense.
@@homeairleakagetest You have a vapor barrier to keep the batt from coming into contact with condensation from the concrete or wood outer wall. Thats the entire point. Putting batt against the wood will mold 100% and is advised against by literally everyone for the last idk 10 years or so.
No. The point of this video is not water mitigation. It is air sealing and insulation. Comfort and energy efficiency. Make sure water is directed away from the foundation and that will solve that.
And mice love it
lol. You know and I know that ain’t true.
Boric acid makes them sterile. Even if they love it, it just means they'll become sterile even faster.
Inhaling that product is lethal, so to be a home owner and getting a face full of it every time you go into ur attic sucks soooooo bad. We just got rid of ours and we are much happier, don’t even get me started on all the rat droppings that was in it, it makes amazing animal bedding. Messy, toxic, prone to pests, and not as effective as other insulation.
Mice were my first thought. They make beds in the worst places, this must be heaven
This is hilarious. Thanks for your contribution! You must work for the Fiberglass Insulation Association.
I started air sealing my 64 year old house at the end of last winter. Well last month I got a statement from my power company that showed that I used 36% less energy than the average of the top 20% of the most efficient similar sized homes in my area. Before Air Sealing I was always close to the average of the top 20% give or take 3%-5%. I posted that statement on my Facebook page, along with your video of the blower door test before air sealing and after, but before installing new windows, and after. Needless to say a couple of my Facebook friends have asked me to share with them any UA-cam video's that may give them ideas. I've shared a couple of your videos including this one to give them incentives, to get their homes winterized, before this upcoming winter.
That is great to hear! How long have you lived there? I am always amazed when I go into an older home that has not been sealed and I realize not only how much energy was wasted, but how many miserable winters and summers did the residents endure for so long? and needlessly...
And, thank you for sharing my videos. I really appreciate that and I hope they help!
@@homeairleakagetest I've been here since 2011. Because of work, I was putting in close to seventy hours a week so I had very little time to look into improving the efficiency of the house. When I bought the home off the children of the original owner in 2011, the son said to me, my mom could never get warm in that house. Over the first twelve years I found a number of big leaks that once corrected knocked down my utility bills over the years. Nothing could have prepared me for the number of hidden air leaks I've found this year. I'll have everything buttoned and corrected that I wanted to do by the end of October. Next spring I have to finish up in the attic with sealing the Top Plates and increasing the insulation level to R-60. All the attic intrusions and a chase have already been sealed up. Had I realized the amount of work that I was dealing with, I would have hired someone like you to do an energy audit, back when I first moved in.
My attic fireplace chase is open I can see down to the insert, I want to put some plywood down to air seal but I know I need like a 1” gap between the wood and 18” round metal flue pipe. What can I do to air seal the gap between those
Hey, thanks for your contribution! I don't want to be annoying, but check out this video around 2mins: ua-cam.com/video/5F0EK9K4iWk/v-deo.html
@@homeairleakagetest thanks!
I have a 1941 Cape. Can you recommend anyone in Connecticut that can do this work? Thanks!
Hi, sorry. I don't know anyone personally, but find yourself a certified Building Performance Institute Professional and you will be in good hands.
I see your great at replying, so I have a question. I’m finishing my bonus room. 590sqft. I’m insulating with 4” polyiso foil faced foam board. With that insulation, I’m afraid 18k btu mini split won’t run enough to keep humidity down. But not sure 12k will be enough. I’ve thought about putting 6” of poly on the ceiling so maybe a 12k would do. What’s your thoughts.
Hi. This is not my specialty. You should get someone with a mechanical HVAC license to do a an assessment. Do min-splits actually dehumidify? I read recently that they do not do a great job. Also, be sure to air seal all seams around the polyiso. Hope this helps!
Oh yeah, just let me grab my cubic feet per meter measuring device that I keep next to my salad spinner 👍🏻
of course it won't be in the kitchen, but you should have one in the utility room. LOL
If that's the attic then what's the light coming in from the top? Was this the wrong video uploaded to your intro?
Good observation. It was most def the attic. I assume that the flat roof membrane is somewhat translucent as the light is coming in through the plank sheathing gaps.
Can i ask what is the black fitting called?... Thanks
Look this up on Home Depot Broan-NuTone 3 in. to 4 in. Roof Vent Kit for Round Duct Steel in Black
I need to go up there cuz there is a stupid rat
Rats are not stupid, they are opportunists. Seal and insulate your attic and make it less desirable for them to take up residency and they will move on to the neighbor. LOL
Thats why the holes are always covered when I work on electrical, thanks.
Damn look at how much expanding foam you wasted.
That was a tough spot and bad aim. Lol
I’m so afraid!!!! I’ve gotta do it though! This tip helps me understand at least 1 of my BIGGEST FEARS and that is, WHERE TO WALK WITHOUT FALLING THROUGH THE CEILING BELOW!!! An animal somehow made its way into my attic and fell down into my wall!!! I head he scratching and biting, trying to get out for the first time in Sunday evening. I heard it for a short time Monday morning (thinking it finally left out!) by Wednesday, the smell showed it had not.😑 Now, I have to go up in my attic with my extender grabber thingy, locate the studs it fell down between, and get it out of my house!!!! I bought a charcoal mask, I’ve got gloves, I’ve got my plastic to drop it onto once I pull it out, I have my flashlight, your video information, my attic has Trusses by the way…(and I’ve got my fear!😥). Now I’m trying to figure out if I should maybe get a wire hanger or something and go next to the wall where I heard it, push the hanger up through the ceiling so that way, my flashlight will pick it up and I’ll know where to go once I get up there! I wish I had some fluorescent spray paint to paint the tip with! (But wait! Is that eleven a good idea to actually do? I don’t know how to locate the wall where I heard it any other way!🤷♀️)
Hi! Sorry you are having to deal with this tricky situation. The attic is really not that bad of a place. Measure the location of the noise to the exterior walls to get your coordinates for the attic . Use a laser measuring device to make it super easy.
@@homeairleakagetest THANK YOU! Thank you very much! I appreciate the feedback, all of it, especially the part where you said the attic isn’t a scary space! I’ll definitely try my best to think of that space with a different mindset! I’ll repeat what you said to myself with every step I take up there. Thanks for helping to calm my fears.😌
@@femineity@femineity You're welcome! I have been in thousands of attics and have not seen a single animal, snake, or ghost. Take your time. Good luck!

Yes that really works you can save a little bit of electricity 👍👍👍💥💥💥
Any ideas how to seal or close off attic fan louvres in the ceiling? An old house. Fan isn’t used. We’re afraid of varmints coming into the house through the louvres.
Hi! There is a Velcro cover you can install. a.co/d/5LbEhEC
People tend to think "exhaust the hot air" is the solution. When you analyse heat through a roof/ceiling system, you find that a lot of the heat transfer is radiation from the underside of the roof to the top side of the ceiling. The radiation process is not interrupted very much by attic ventilation. The infiltration of (conditioned) air from house into the attic is better defeated by adequate attic ventilation openings (eg, soffit vents and gable vents). Sealing holes is important, but reducing the negative pressure in the attic removes the motive force (pressure differential). Mechanical venitilation of an attic is not as easy as it looks, particularly with gable exhaust vents. I've done the calculations of reducing roof load via ventilation, and the cost of running the fan roughly equals the svaings on air conditioning, so no pay back. Extreme heating climates usually translate into sealing holes and cracks being the best remedy.
Amazing analysis! Thank you for your contribution!
Good info, thanks!!!
