    Biggest regret of my build was using the glass windows from Vanpimps due to the condensation. It's caused a rust issue with my sliding door so if I was ever to do another build I would go for the double glazed all in one caravan type windows. Best of luck, it seems like only yesterday I started mine not nearly 4 years. I would replace all the pulleys, especially the alternator clutch pulley. Look for a company called Parts In Motion based in Exeter, they supply quality parts with a choice. I always opt for Febi/Bilstein and they're super fast to deliver.

    Hello, I used the same paint on my sprinter. I sprayed it and used a five percent mix with thinners. I found this a good mix as ten percent was too thin. I used trade paint thinners, no harder needed. I bought a five litre can which is plenty for lwb sprinter. All the best. I used ten litres of paint. 👍🚐😎

  • @SH-vb5ph
    @SH-vb5ph 5 днів тому

    Not convinced on the original diagnosis. A more likely issue would be a split across the top of the plastic intake manifold, which in extremis causes a loud boost leak on the nearside (RHD) and engine oil leaking out the top of the damaged intake itself. Check very carefully under the fuel filter housing, it can easily cover the bell housing like that. Genuine replacement MB intake with all gaskets is around £175. Upgrade the fuel filter housing at the same time.

    • @themayorsmiths
      @themayorsmiths 5 днів тому

      Thank you so much, that’s very helpful, we will look into that, it really does perplex us that’s for sure, not 100% sure what it is still to be honest, did you see the symptoms list at the end of the video?

    • @SH-vb5ph
      @SH-vb5ph 5 днів тому

      Yes… it reads as though there’s more than one issue. Were you able to do a plug in short test before getting to this point, any boost issues? For starters the EGR valve and cooler are really easy to remove check and clean right now, just take the four pipes off the black vacuum reservoir and the reservoir itself, then the small front coolant hose off the EGR (the top rad and matrix hoses are already off of course). The stainless transition tube will need degunking as well. You’ll also find out if anyone has fitted an EGR delete blanking plate. On the split intake, it’s a known OM651 issue that you can usually identify as the oil seems to leak right from the top, you could easily mistake it for a rocker gasket leak. You can just see the top of the black plastic intake strengthening webs when looking down underneath the fuel filter housing. Or, just take the fuel filter housing off. If there’s engine oil under there it’s odds on a split intake. If it is split and you need a steer on how to replace it just ask.

    • @themayorsmiths
      @themayorsmiths 5 днів тому

      Thanks for your help/advice. The whole egr assembly has already been removed and I have a new fuel filter housing to fit in the service kit so I will investigate the housing then, the egr looks ok although that puts water in the oil and not oil in the coolant. The egr pipe is cracked as seen in the video, no boost issues, I will clean the egr cooler and injectors before refitting, obviously the head gasket will also be changed as well and be checked. I am at a bit of a loss still to be honest but hopefully with your help we will get there. Rained off this week so the next video will be the 2nd insulation video and the week after back to the engine. Thanks again

    • @themayorsmiths
      @themayorsmiths 5 днів тому

      @@SH-vb5ph if you go onto our channel, go to shorts, we have listed a short for you to look at, it doesn’t seem to be the intake at all. Please take a look.

    • @SH-vb5ph
      @SH-vb5ph 5 днів тому

      Just watched it… That actually looks really good, thankfully the top of the intake is dry. When they split engine oil collects in the indentations on top of the intake moulding / underneath the fuel filter housing, then over time it leaks down the nearside of bell housing initially, eventually all over it. Your intake looks dry so you can rule that out as an oil leak cause. I had missed in the original clip that the transition tube has cracked, that was definitely the cause of the gunk under the EGR valve. You’re doing really well. To give you some perspective the factory book time is eleven labour hours for a motor swap. It was definitely the right call to pull it out, you’ll save time now compared to trying to tackle the next jobs in situ.

    You might want to run thr thermal insulation over the ceiling ridges because they are thermal bridges, just like the rest of the metal roof, and will lead to condensation. In the alternatve, you can try to stuff the other insulation into those ridges and then cover with the vapor barrior.

    • @themayorsmiths
      @themayorsmiths 16 днів тому

      Yes we plan to stuff the recycled plastic in them, can’t use the thermal as unfortunately it’s a medium roof van and Ryan has only 30mm gap when standing, so need to use some of the space for decorative covering.

  • @levt2156
    @levt2156 16 днів тому

    Btw - you can buy shower heads that have a pause function where the water dribbles out on pause so that it maintains the temperature when you're ready to rinse. There isn't an issue with fan blades flapping if you purchase the Maxx Air fan, so it can go anywhere on the roof.

      @themayorsmiths my pleasure. I ran into so many questions when building my van. Having finished it about 2 years ago, there are things I would have done differently had I known at the time. BTW - a squigee after showers really helps the bathroom dry faster so that you don't need to wait very long to put your wardrobe back in place.

    • @themayorsmiths
      @themayorsmiths 16 днів тому

  • @levt2156

    This looks like a solid floorplan! My suggestion: don't put upper cabinets on the head and the foot of the bed because there might not be enough room for you to sit up enough to read, etc, depending on the height of your bed. Instead, run upper cabs at the foot and across the back doors. You can always run a high, shallow shelf at the head of the bed for books, decor, plants, etc., for more storage.

    When you say suspected head gasket, there is a very simple test for that. Are you 100% positive that’s the issue? What kind of mileage is on it? Is it knocking?

      @@NoelG-IRE hi Noel, thank you so much for your comment, it's been diagnosed by two separate mechanics to be the head gasket. Smoking, smells a bit, also oil in the coolant, it's had a combustion leak test as well. 147k

      @@NoelG-IRE and no knocking, just going to check the bearings when engine removed.

      @themayorsmiths get you mate. I have this tendency to question everything so when you said “suspect”, I thought you hadn’t even had it properly diagnosed. If it failed the test it’s an absolute certainty. No suspect about it! I’m interested as I recently picked up a decent example W905 and I knew people claimed the 905 engines were a lot more reliable than the 906, but I never thought it would be more reliable than the 907. Crazy as the 906’s and Crafters of same vintage seem to suffer a lot with heads. I heard the dpf’s give trouble too, so I’m assuming what actually happens is dpf getting blocked which restricts exhaust flow and ultimately overheats the head. Touch wood mine stays as reliable as people claim them to be but I’d seriously consider getting a dpf delete to avoid this happening again.

      Dpf is always an issue and always will be due to the EU rules, it restricts diesels running properly. Regarding the engine it’s a 651 engine in the 906 and 907 so the same engine since 2008, hope you got a great van and have many years of running from her. Thanks for the comment and best of luck with it all.
