Country guy into all things mechanical, ag. And wildlife.
the oak tree that tried to kill me.
back in April. I was cutting down a tree like the hundreds before and this one split and fell on my left leg. It trapped me and broke my leg in 3 places. this is the first time I've been back to it.

If you gather a few different types of toolsteels that you know are D-2, A-2,M-2,or 0-1 write down their name with paint marker on them then go to a pedastle grinder and with it preferably on a dark area so you can witness the spark shape, size, length and the way it shoots when held to the edge of the grinding wheel and make sure you use the upper edge so teh sparks shoot out and you don't need to press hard against the wheel to get a nice spark flow. Now do this to all 4 types of toolsteels and you'll be able to notice their different spark patterns, just like snowflakes or tree roots have branches so will the sparks amd you will be able to differentiate between the metals by the tone of the spark, and also by the shape and length of the sparks. That's why I said it's better in a dark area. Npw you can take your mystery metals and compare them to the known metals one by one. Even lower carbon steels or stainless will have their unique sparks. You will be able to use this technique to locate unmarked toolsteels in a pile of low carbon steels and in order for you to be able to heat treat they must be of higher carbon content. You will not be able to harden a carbide tipped saw blade because the metal is most likely Not a heat treatable material, and the carbide tips definitely are not heat treatable because they are formed by high compression of carbide dust into their specific shapes and teh powder is already hard. But you could braze the tips onto the edge of a soft blade, one where you've already ground away the blade to accommodate the carbide inserts. If you did that along the knife edge from front to back so each tip was touching each other with no goaps, once they were brazed and cooled off, you'd them have to grind the carbide using a diamond wheel as opposed to a stand silicone carbide based wheel normally used.. Then you could have a carbide edged knife and it would be hard as hell but also brittle. So if you drop the knife don't be surprised if the carbide cracks or chips. I've been in Machining industry for 40 years and was taught how to figure out which metal it is by using this technique pretty accurately. Remember these tips - - 0-1 is oil hardening and gets quenched in oil -A-2 is air hardened -D-2,M2 use specific temperatures to shock the materials that make the molecules get denser which create the hardened edge. Read up on the various ways of heat treating toolsteels and you will be able to do those materials but you'll need heat markers and a kiln of sorts to be able to slow then at the rate they need to be hardened properly. Hope this info helped.
Agree quench the cutting edge in water amazing kk dally is a good blacksmith
Did you try to quench in water?

Jump in, I dare ya
Hi, found your video searching for Norwood and wanted to say hey. I work in Norwood and live just east of there. We do definitely have respectful people here in the Ozarks, but lots of rude ones too. It's a great to live though.
Great comment, and hope you are having a good time living the dream.
Thats a split ring wheel ,not a split rim wheel Regards
You are correct, we get lazy with terms in the mechanical field.
Yeah, saw on this other channel, wranglerstar that suggested said heavy equipment keys. Pretty good prep for SHTF.
Great video. This is definitely a topic that needs to be considered more. There's also master keys for things like office desks cabinets rv storage boxes and much more. Imagine the supplies you could now have access to in a SHTF situation.
AWESOME!!!!! Thanks for the response!!! agree 100%

You can screw a block of wood to the first piece to hold center piece edges. Just don't get it to tight as to not be able to slide your new piece In
Chipboard not plywood my friend
True, I use plywood as a generic term, for any wood sheet.
@@juts89mj just me, great job mate. Keep up the great work 😊

Thanks for the video. I have a Cub cadet 1018 that has a nasty rattle in the muffler. I wonder if installing several sheet metal screws in the sides to pull the pieces back together would work? Then tack weld the screws to keep them from being rattled out. Thanks again.
Nail a scrap block on and use it as a ledge, lot less rotation compared to the nail
Good idea
I am going to have to do this very thing myself. Should be interesting.
Nice job Jut!!! Proud of your hard work!
Thank you!!
Turn up the amps when it does like that
youre doing it wrong man, bust the bead down more. youre having trouble with the ring cause the tire isnt sitting low enough. what you can do if you cant get the tire lower into the rim is use a jack to press he tire down where the split is then pop it open.
I know they were dry and stiff, i shouldve used some lube also
O m g
I have one of these and it is the best wood splitter I have found. The Bark Buster should be used with care but is far less dangerous than the chainsaw used to buck the wood into firewood length rounds. EZ John
Its quite the critter!😂
Man get ya a FORD tractor out there and youll be done in like 5 mins...
